A Night at Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa

What makes a hotel a boutique hotel?

The definition of boutique hotel can be rather vague. So after having done the necessary research, I have come to a comprehensive conclusion. A boutique hotel is an intimate hotel that provides guests with ultra-personalised service and exclusive accommodation.

Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa is all of this and more.

On a recent nights stay at this exceptionally luxurious and extremely exclusive five-star hotel, we enjoyed what can be considered as our best hotel stay ever.

Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa is a sanctuary in the heart of Sandton, Johannesburg. Sandton is a major business hub and shopping haven. As you drive through the hotel gates, you enter a different world, leaving all of this behind you. It feels like you’ve driven for miles and arrived at an oasis far far away. Picture Palladian inspired architecture, lush lawns, beautiful gardens and a Balinese inspired Spa.

The hotel has 40 luxurious suites. Each suite has been decorated to the highest standards. From Grand Chateau Suites that can be enjoyed by group travellers, to the newly renovated and decorated Courtyard Suites, for the discerning romantic couple, there is a room for everyone. But if a tree house is more your thing, there is also a Tree House Studio for a perfect family stay.

We enjoyed our stay in one of the individually decorated Courtyard Suites. Because the rooms are individually decorated, no two rooms look the same. However every room is spacious and modern with perfect hand painted finishes, a fire place and granite vanities in the bathroom.

The Spa at Fairlawns is definitely one of a kind. It is a Balinese-stye Spa with a range of therapies and signature Asian-inspired treatments. The Spa has a heated plunge pool, a spa bath, a Chinese daybed and pod swing chairs, just to name a few of the features. There is an extensive selection of facials, massage therapies, body treatments, as well as packages for every one.

The Spa has a holistic approach to wellness, and is a true oasis of serenity in the heart of Johannesburg.

Even if you don’t have a treatment, walking through the Balinese Gardens, is just as therapeutic for the mind, body and soul. And that is exactly what we did. We took a stroll through the gardens and left feeling inspired and rejuvenated. I cannot wait to return for a treatment though!

The hotel is surrounded by lush gardens, rolling lawns and plentiful birdlife. The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful as they are well maintained and manicured. From rose bushes, bougainvilleas and massive trees, it doesn’t feel like you’re in the middle of Johannesburg, but rather on a beautiful estate in the countryside. The hotel ensures guests can take full advantage of the beautiful gardens, by having placed little gazebos all over, and not just by the pool area.

We certainly took full advantage of the gazebos with a good book and a drink in hand. It was truly relaxing and calmed all the senses.

Dining at Fairlawns is an affair on its own. Even if you’re not a guest of the hotel, you’re more than welcome to wine and dine at here for a special occasion. If fine dining is your preference, you can do so at Amuse Bouche with candlelit tables and romantic music in the background. Or Manor House Bistro is more for casual dining where you will choose from café style meals and enjoy a more relaxed homely meal.

Fairlawns is also famous for their classic high tea spread.

The thought of getting out of our comfortable robes and into clothing scared us, so we indulged in room service for dinner. The beautiful presentation of every dish we ordered was on par with the fantastic and distinct flavours. The condensed milk creme brûlée is well worth returning for too.

Breakfast the next morning was just as outstanding. From oysters, smoked salmon and champagne the variety was endless.

The Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa is an absolute oasis from the hustle and bustle of a vibrant Johannesburg. It is a unique boutique hotel that oozes ultimate luxury in the suites, true decadence in the food and, most of all, absolute serenity in its gardens and Spa. The staff are nothing less than courteous and efficient and ensured our stay is a memorable one.

If you’re looking for an ultimate weekend away, Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa is the place.
