A night at The Ashford Guesthouse

Food

Imagine walking into the cosiest guesthouse and the smell of freshly baked crunchie biscuits welcomes you. This is what happened when we arrived at The Ashford Guesthouse this past weekend. Not only did the delicious aromas of freshly baked biscuits welcome us, but so did Zanele, with her friendly, bubbly smile.

location

The Ashford Guesthouse is conveniently located in the heart of Johannesburg in the suburb of Parkwood. Parkwood is famous for being a quiet jacaranda tree-lined suburb and is nestled between Rosebank and Saxonwold. From the guesthouse, you have easy to access to all major areas, like Sandton, Parkhurst, Hyde Park and even Norwood. The streets of Parkwood get really pretty during the season of Spring (end of September to early November) when the jacaranda trees bloom. It’s definitely a must see, if you’re a nature lover, like me!

Soon after we arrived at The Ashford we were shown around. We were instantly taken aback by how cosy and homely this guesthouse is. The guesthouse may look small from the outside, but with six double rooms all with en-suite bathrooms, it’s really not small at all. All rooms have doors which open up onto the shaded patio. The patio is the perfect spot for your afternoon cup of tea with a freshly baked crunchie biscuit while reading the newspaper and listening to the birds chirping. It really is so peaceful and relaxing!

our room

Our room felt like a haven. The bed was so comfortable and with DSTV, we were glued to the TV, while we sipped on bubbles and nibbled on Lindt chocolate all afternoon. It really felt like we were far from the city of Jozi, when in actual fact we were right in the middle. There’s just something about The Ashford that makes you feel like you’re a million miles away while still feeling like you’re home.

breakfast

We woke up on a beautiful Sunday morning to an English breakfast spread waiting for us. I am the biggest breakfast person as it’s my favourite meal of the day, and breakfast at The Ashford was truly something special. It’s the attention to detail, the service with a smile and just the general atmosphere that we loved! And of course the rich aroma of freshly ground coffee, but who wouldn’t love that?

From cereal and granola, to fresh fruit and yoghurt, cold meats and a selection of cheese, we were spoilt for choice. Let’s not forget though, the most delicious scrambled eggs and cheese omelette. It’s simple things like this that leaves a guest feeling truly happy and satisfied!

The Ashford Guesthouse is simply a home away from home. We were given the most special welcome on arrival, the setting is perfect and quiet, the rooms are not just cosy but also homely, and breakfast is a real treat. The best part though was Zanele, her absolutely delicious crunchies and her service with a heartwarming smile. We were sad to leave but knowing we’re just around the corner is the perfect excuse for another mini staycation!

  1. I’m in need of a Joburg staycation as I haven’t seen my sister in over 7 months and she lives in JHB and I’m in Durbs, so I’d love to come visit her and spend some quality time together for a night at this beautiful location! Pick me! X

  2. Gosh I am in DESPERATE need of a Staycation! The hubby and I find ourselves relentlessly exhausted by our two year old offspring. It is our fourth wedding anniversary at the end of August and I think we could really do with a night off of parenting and some quality US time! We live in Centurion so just a short drive away from Parkwood! Holding massive thumbs 🙂

  3. Since moving to Johannesburg post living in Cape Town for 11 years I am always trying to find charming places that I can getaway to within the city to refresh, recharge and refuel from the Jozi beat.
This delightful and charming gem of a place looks just like the perfect staycation waiting to be experienced.

  4. I deserve a staycation, just because I can 😛 And because I want to 😛 Kidding! The Ashford Guesthouse is right on my doorstep, but it would be cool to break away for a night for a change of scenery and good food 🙂 And because your Insta-stories and this article is amazing and I now have travel envy!

  5. Both Matt and I are in desperate need of a staycation. It’s been a tough year for us both, health wise and some very difficult changes. Both of us aren’t able to take any leave so The Ashford sounds like the perfect little getaway, close to home.

  6. Oh man I need this! My husband and I got married last year and in our first year of marriage he was in hospital for 10 days after a diabetic seizure and then recovering from a broken shoulder (from the seizure) and pneumonia. In this past week I have just been diagnosed with asthma. So it has been a very stressful year and a staycation would give us a stress free opportunity to breath! Ps your pictures look gorgeous

  7. I am in need of a staycation as I am in the final semester of my degree and would love to take a brake before all the stress hits hahah.well it already has so think this is perfect

  8. I am in desperate need of a staycation, well we both are, I have this amazing colleague who has also become my best friend. We are both Grade 1 teachers, and before everyone thinks we have an easy job, I swear to you now we don’t. I would love to spoil my dear friend with this staycation as our year has not been a pleasant one thus far, I would like to show her how much I appreciate her and respect her as a teacher. Thanks for all your amazing blogs.

  9. Ah how I would love this Staycation!! Recently retrenched, going through a divorce and a one year old fiesty little girl I would give anything for a night out to relax and recharge. The Ashford Guesthouse looks like exactly that. As you said I need to feel like I am out of Joburg but really here just in case!

  10. A weekend at a charming guesthouse can do wonders to rejuvenate your body, mind and soul. Would be awesome.

  11. I am not one to have to justify a weekend break as I think everyone has different stories and journeys and are all as deserving as each other. I would love to be able to share a night away from the relentless ‘hustle’ with my special sister who means the world to me and is so deserving of a night ‘off’ to unwind for a short while! The Ashford looks like it is set up to be an amazing success in JHB. Wishing you all the best!

  12. I would absolutely love this staycatio, it would be a real treat to take my mom away for a night so that instead of her always running around after other people she can be spoilt for a change. This prize would be such an amazing surprise for her and give us the opportunity to have some real mother daughter bonding ❤️

  13. I need a staycation me and hubby had a hard year and with two busy toddler boys we never rest. My hubby works long hours and days so for us just to get a night away will be so well deserve. I’m a stay at home mommy but am currently looking for a job so can never spoil my hubby out of my own. So would love be able to spoil him to show him how much he means to us.

  14. I need a little vacay to say the least. Being a #girlboss ish so rewarding and I love what I do but boy oh boy sometimes you just need a weekend of pause and soaking up the calm.

  15. Pick me!
I would love to win a staycaytion. I am a single
Mom to 3 girls. I have just moved house at the end of July – exhausting and stil so much to do. I am working 2 jobs desparately trying to make ends meet. Just exhausted and always rushing around. Would love to just rest. Thank you.

  16. I would ❤️❤️❤️to win. As a working single mom I never have the opportunity (or money) to some quiet time. August is also my birthday month and this would be such a lovely treat ♥️??

  17. My husband and I are both self employed and haven’t had the cash to have a change of scenery lately. It would be great for us to just get a way for a night…we need the break!
