Minkys ultimate guide to Plettenberg Bay

Food

I call Plettenberg Bay my second home because basically it is. I have been visiting this beautiful little seaside town since I was a baby for our annual summer holiday. Now I visit three or four times a year to see family and also to unwind. You can call me a local if you want and I will be happy because I kinda am. I know everyone by name and I know the streets backwards. I also know the restaurants and hidden gems very well. Because of this I often get messages popping into my inbox that read something like this …

So the next time you visit Plett, save yourself a message, because here is my guide to the best of the best in Plett:

♥ BEST BRUNCH SPOT – LE FOURNIL DE PLETT

Le Fournil make the most amazing freshly baked goods including artisan breads and French pastries. Their almond croissants are my favourite thing in this world especially when the weather gets a little cold and rainy and I need something delicious with my coffee. My favourite sandwich for lunch is the Saint Germain! And with a glass of fresh homemade lemonade, it is delicious! Their scrambled eggs are also creamy and just perfect. In actual fact, everything on the menu is absolutely superb. And the best thing is, everything on the menu is perfect for that in between breakfast and lunch meal AKA brunch!

♥ BEST PLACE TO EAT A PIZZA AND WATCH THE SUNSET – ENRICO’S

The terrace at Enrico’s restaurant on Keurboomstrand is the most perfect spot for watching dolphins swim by and maybe a whale or two if it’s the right season as well as the most gorgeous sunset. The food at Enrico’s is also absolutely amazing! The menu offers a big selection of the best pizza and pasta dishes as well as some specialty dishes like line fish which is my favourite. They also have homemade Italian ice cream and I cannot recommend the pistachio flavour more.

♥ BEST TEA AND CAKE – OULAND ROYALE

Tea time is my favourite time and at Ouland Royale it is the best time! Ouland Royale is a magical Baroque styled barn located just outside of Plett. It is the ideal venue for weddings, celebrations and an afternoon cup of tea. The setting is absolutely beautiful, the decor is magical and the food is delicious. I highly recommend having a slice of their famous cake – either a slice of the chocolate cake, lemon cake or cheese cake. Oh and they also make the BEST scones with jam and real cream.

♥ BEST BEACH – LOOKOUT BEACH

Plett is proudly home to some “Blue Flag” beaches. This means they have been graded and are among some of the best beaches in the world. Lookout Beach is one of them. This famous beach is my favourite because it is absolutely beautiful. The views are breathtaking especially at sunset when the waves and mountains are highlighted by the setting sun giving off the most beautiful colours.

♥ BEST SATURDAY MORNING MARKET – WILD OATS COMMUNITY FARMERS MARKET

You are going to have to wake up a little extra early on a Saturday morning for this market because it is in Sedgefield which is about an hours drive from Plett. The drive is scenic and beautiful though so it goes quickly, I promise! The Wild Oats Community Farmers Market could be the best market ever. There is just so much atmosphere and the vendors sell only local farm and homemade food products. And everything is of the highest quality and the most delicious standard. What I also love about this market is that dogs are allowed, so while you are shopping and browsing, you can cuddle a pooch or two.

♥ BEST PIZZA – ICE DREAM LAND

The name says it all, Ice Dream Land is a dream.Ice Dream Land is an Italian Gelateria, coffee shop and restaurant serving up some of the most delicious pizza I have had since our trip to Italy as well as real gelato. I feature Ice Dream Land in this blog post, so you can read more about it there.

♥ BEST PLACE TO SOAK UP THE BEAUTIFUL VIEWS AND WATCH THE DOLPHINS SWIM BY – THE PLETTENBERG

The Plettenberg is one of my favourite hotels in South Africa. Not only is the hotel itself absolutely beautiful but so are the views. It is my favourite place in Plett to sit with a cup of tea (and a scone) or a glass of wine and just soak up the views of the sea, the lagoon and the mountains in the background. There is just something about this setting that is so tranquil and therapeutic. If luck is on your side, this is the best place to watch the dolphins swim by too.

♥ BEST WINE FARM – BRAMON WINE ESTATE

The Plett Winelands currently includes more than 18 wine farms. While I have visited a few of them, like Packwood, Newstead and Kay and Monty Vineyards, Bramon Wine Estate is still one of my favourites. The setting is beautiful, the wine is delicious and the food is sublime. I love ordering all the mezze dishes off the menu and eating from a selection of different delicious things.

♥ BEST FARM STALL – THYME AND AGAIN

Thyme and Again is a farm stall just outside of Plett, towards Port Elizabeth, that sells homemade jams, bread, cakes, tarts, fruit, pies and so much more. This little farm stall has so much charm and is just so cozy. I highly recommend their apple tart and milk tart. Actually I highly recommend everything in the shop, even their biltong!

♥ BEST BUBBLEGUM ICE CREAM – KNYSNA WATERFRONT

Remember that bubblegum flavoured ice cream we used to eat in our youth? Well I finally found ice cream as delicious from the little ice cream kiosk as the Knysna Waterfront and oh my, as I type this, I need some right now! Just one lick takes you right back to your childhood. Add a gorgeous view of the boats at the Waterfront, and you have yourself a treat.
