I recently changed my hair care routine and let me fill you in on a secret …
I am totally crazy for coconut hair care products!
For the last few months or so I noticed my hair was in need of a bit of oomph. My hair was getting too used to the same shampoo and conditioner I had been using. I also noticed that with all the traveling my hair was getting a bit dry and lifeless, so I needed to mix things up a bit.
My hair is super long and I try my hardest to ensure I look after it properly. I try use only salon quality hair products, so none of the mass produced stuff. I put this treatment in my hair nearly every week and I try not use too much heat on my hair either, but if I do I use a heat protectant spray.
So here is my new hair care routine:
Coconut Oil, Coconut Oil, Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is the bees knees for your hair and scalp. You will only notice an improvement after a few applications, but you have to be consistent with your applications. If you have tried it once or twice without noticing an improvement and thought it’s an old wives tail, I have good news – it isn’t!
So what I have been doing for the past six months or so is a I have been applying coconut oil to my scalp as well as to the length of my hair as often as I can. I try aim for twice a week but if not then once a week is also fine. When I know I am going to be home the whole day I apply it in the morning and let it soak until the evening when I have a shower and shampoo and condition like normal. That means I let it soak and absorb for at least a good few hours.
OGX Weightless Hydration Coconut Water Shampoo and Conditioner
As I said before I try stick to salon quality hair products. Unless I have read only amazing things about store bought products, will I try them out. But they have to have an amazing write up before I even consider them. Organix Weightless Hydration Coconut Water Shampoo and Conditioner is from Dischem … Surprise Surprise! And this range is amazing.
The shampoo is so lightweight and has a thick gel-like consistency. Just a small amount lathers and foams up and does a wonderful job removing the coconut oil and dirt from my hair. I like to shampoo twice (as one should) just to make sure all the excess oil and dirt is washed out. But two washes doesn’t leave my hair feeling stripped or dry. Coconut oil is hard to wash out, believe me, I know. I once had to shampoo 4 times to get it out when I was using a brand of shampoo that I rather not mention here.
I then apply the conditioner just to the ends of my hair, as this part is always thirsty for conditioner. I don’t apply any to my scalp as conditioner is known to weigh your hair down. The conditioner is rich and creamy but not over oily at the same time.
Both the shampoo and conditioner contain coconut oil and coconut water, which is what my hair just loves. The scent is absolutely divine too. But I don’t use a shampoo and conditioner based on its scent alone. I trust a shampoo and conditioner on the result it gives!
Result
After letting my hair and scalp soak in the coconut oil and then washing it out with the OGX shampoo and applying the conditioner after, my hair is so soft, so shiny, so nourished, so smooth and so bouncy.
If you don’t believe me, you can see the picture below.
Benefits of Coconut Oil for your Hair
♥ Stimulates hair growth by getting deep into its follicles.
♥ Promotes a healthy scalp by fighting against dandruff and other problems.
♥ Adds shine and softness to the hair.
♥ Prevents hair breakage and split ends, contributing to a healthy hair length.
♥ Rich in anti-microbial properties, lauric acid, and medium-chain fatty acids that strengthen hair, condition the scalp, and help to regrow hair.
It is important to use organic virgin coconut oil, which means it is still in its natural unrefined state and it hasn’t been stripped of any of its properties.
So that is the secret to my current hair care routine. And I wasn’t paid for this post, incase you’re wondering 😉
Other Uses of Coconut Oil
Coconut oil can also use be used as a cuticle conditioner, makeup remover, body moisturiser and a bath oil.
The OGX Shampoo and Conditioner is available at all Dischem stores.
Coconut oil can be bought at Dischem also, or health shops, or even your supermarket.
Have you used coconut oil before?
♥
P.S. As I type this, I am sitting on my laptop with my hair drenched in coconut oil and I am wearing a shower cap. Just like my Granny used to, except she had rollers in her hair.
It’s insane that I still haven’t tried coconut oil on my hair.
I did try that shampoo and conditioner, and I loved them! I’m currently using another shampoo and have already made a note that I don’t like it as much as the OGX ones. And it was pricier!
