a 6 course wine pairing lunch.
Just a short drive out of the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg, you will find yourself at a five star hotel called Forum Homini. This five star hotel is located in a private game reserve. It is known for its fascinating architecture, unique and luxury suites that are cut into the earth, just like caves, as well as a top fine dining restaurant called Roots.
Roots
Be it for a special occasion, a treat or a sophisticated meal, the 6 course wine pairing lunch/dinner at Roots is an absolute gourmet experience. The menu changes seasonally and each dish is perfectly curated with subtle African or Asian influences. Each dish is also paired with a wine that perfectly complements the flavours.
Sunday Lunch
We recently enjoyed a Sunday lunch at Roots.
We arrived on a beautiful summers day at about 12:30. The maître d’ showed us to our table which was situated overlooking the beautiful lake. With a few birds fluttering by, this natural setting really took us far away from city life.
First Course:
potato gnocchi: dehydrated parma ham, buttermilk labneh, pickled onions, butternut puree and charred peaches.Â
Second Course:
cured salmon: salmon tartare, pickled cucumber ribbons, yuzu gel, horseradish mousse.
Third Course:
duck breast: leg terrine, porcini puree, artichokes, cauliflower, pickled shimeji, sorrel
Fourth Course:
beef fillet: prime rib, smoked potato puree, glazed carrots, baby leeks, black garlic puree, onion herb crumble.
Fifth Course:
mango panna cotta: mango gel, coconut snow, popping candy, passion fruit siphon, coconut sorbet, passionfruit curd.Â
Sixth Course:
chocolate fudge sponge: dulcey dulce cream, banana ice cream, banana chips, hot fudge sauce, chocolate banana soil, salted caramel, pliable peanut butter ganache.Â
The amount of preparation and exquisite presentation is evident with each dish that came out of the kitchen. I found the whole experience to be a gastronomic feat. From learning about each different wine with every course, to appreciating the flavours. We left wanting more, yet were so full, and all of our taste buds were satisfied.
What I like about Roots is that they catered for any dietary requirements and they made any substitutions upon request. The boyfriend doesn’t eat pork or fish, so instead he had lamb and chicken. He loved how it wasn’t a slap dash quick fix substitute, but instead, both dishes were cooked and displayed to perfection.
If you’re looking for the ultimate foodie fiesta, and want to spoil your loved one for a special occasion, Roots is the restaurant. From the romantic setting, to being treated like royalty and the food being equally amazing, its definitely somewhere special.
