While I do have a list of my favourite places to eat in Johannesburg, I am always ready to try a new spot. Be it a bar, restaurant, coffee shop, juice bar, a supermarket or any little spot that sells something you can nibble on, I am there like a bear.
Here are 3 new foodie spots that have I have been loving lately …
JACKSONS REAL FOOD MARKET
Jacksons Real Food Market is not your ordinary grocery store. This is because Jacksons is all about local, sustainable and ethical food produce. What does this mean for us? Well this means you can do all of your grocery shopping under one roof for all things organic, free range and healthy … And not have to hop from one shop to the next looking for your favourite treats.
You will find locally sourced, organically grown fruit and veg, top local cheeses, non-GMO and wood fired breads, the finest grass fed eats, and so much more.
Not only is it a supermarket (well, a real food market) but they also have a restaurant serving up the healthiest breakfast, lunches and dinners. You will also find a little Origin Coffee Roasting Bar for your instant caffeine fix, a fresh juice bar for your daily green juice and more, as well as Patachou Patisserie serving the most delicious little tea time treats. And the best macaroons I have ever had!

THE BIG MOUTH
Not so newish, but new to me, is The Big Mouth in Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton. From grilled seafood, to gourmet burgers (the boyfriends favourite) to a world class sushi menu, there is something for everyone. But what I love most is the sushi menu, especially the new style sashimi (as pictured).
Sushi in South Africa is mediocre. Its either a little above average or its not great at all, and there isn’t anything in-between. But I have found The Big Mouth to be exceptionally above average, and I love sushi! They have a huge selection to choose from and it is of the highest quality. From tuna or salmon tartar tacos, rock shrimp tempura, salmon skin futomaki, and spicy tuna maki, they’re all a favourite of mine.

RITUAL CAFE
The little suburb of Linden has slowly but surely become my favourite hangout. Its home to some of the best restaurants and coffee shops Jozi has to offer. And now its also home to the cosiest bistro with the most delicious food – Ritual Cafe.
Ritual Cafe is a bistro style restaurant with an intimate atmosphere, whose head chef (and owner) is Sean Ackermann. The menu is small, which means the quality of the food is there. But as small as the menu is, there’s a dish for every taste. Mussels in a curry sauce, seared salmon, burgers, gnocchi with walnuts and blue cheese, and a thai style vegetable curry (my favourite), are just a few of the options. As well as speciality desserts, like their famous homemade fig ice cream, for the perfect ending.
Johannesburg hasn’t seen a restaurant of this calibre for a long time. Think a cosy and intimate vibe, with quality, tasty and flavourful food, that is simple but superb.
Address is 32 7th Street, Linden (Open Tuesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner).
