Plettenberg Bay’s Secret Hideout: Kurland Hotel

Food

Situated along the famous Garden Route, just outside of Plettenberg Bay,
lies a luxurious boutique country hotel …

… Kurland Hotel

Kurland Hotel is a mere 20 km’s outside of Plettenberg Bay. With the beautiful Outeniqua Mountains as its backdrop, the hotel has a setting like no other. As you drive through the black iron gates, romantic Cape Dutch architecture, a blanket of lush lawns, fragrant rose gardens, paddocks and polo fields welcome you.

I grew up in Plettenberg Bay, but I couldn’t wait to play tourist and explore this small towns best kept secret.

So on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon, this hotel captured us with its easy-going atmosphere and private country home feel. We relished in the weather and savoured what promised to be a luxuriously cosy night. The weather playing its part, the fireplace blazing, everything was perfect and time felt at a complete standstill.

TEA TIME

Tea time at Kurland is a royal affair. From 3:30pm onwards High Tea is served. When you think of High Tea, you think of a formal gathering around a table of treats. At Kurland it is a little different but so very delightful. You can choose where you would like to sit. Either in the library, the dining room, one of the many quaint lounges or on the terrace. Selection then comes between scones, the cake of the day, or a savoury treat. Or have everything, if you wish.

After check in, we gathered on the terrace over looking the main pool area. The tea was delicious, the slice of lemon cake was moreish, the chocolate cake was decadent and we lapped up the absolute serenity.

THE ROOM

The hotel has 12 lavishly kitted out suites, each with their own unique features. The luxury and superior suites all have private lofts. The luxury suites also have secluded courtyards and water features, while the superior suites have private plunge pools and magnificent views.

After tea time, we were taken to our room, the superior suite in the rose garden. It was quite a walk from the reception area, but being so far away from the main hotel area ensured privacy and peacefulness. Upon entering the room, we took delight in the “rose theme”, a luxuriously elegant, homely and country feeling. The decor suitably comprised of a soothing colour scheme of white, rose pink and beige. Other notable features is the fireplace, lounge area, spacious bathroom with a view and a walk in cupboard.

The balcony opens onto a terrace which has panoramic views of the estate, as well as a little plunge pool perfect for summer. This terrace was the perfect spot for our morning coffee with a book in hand.

With the rain outside, the fire going and the most beautiful room, there was no way we were going to head out. So it was a bubble bath, robe and room service night in.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT KURLAND HOTEL

Kurland is conveniently situated just outside of Plett. If you’re one for a beach holiday, with just a short drive away, you can find yourself on one of Plett’s world famous white sandy beaches. Or if you prefer country living, you can enjoy the very best the estate has to offer. At Kurland Hotel, you get the best of both worlds, which to me, is perfect for a memorable holiday.

The views, setting and atmosphere at Kurland is awe inspiring and so very country. The hotel ensures guests soak this all up by offering horse riding or four wheeler rides around the estate. Our favourite thing, however, was going for walks as often as we could. Coming from the city of Johannesburg, it is not often you get to walk through the beautiful country side, so we took full advantage. From the rose gardens, to the paddocks, and the little farmyard with pigs, we loved every little stop we made.

Another little feature I loved at Kurland is the fact that there is no tea/coffee facilities in the room. So when you want tea or coffee, you dial the restaurant and it will be delivered to your room straight away. That means a freshly brewed cup of coffee or cup of tea, on a tray, first thing in the morning (in bed). And if you request some biscuits, you get the most delicious butter biscuits.

My favourite part of any hotel stay is the food. And the food at Kurland was absolutely exceptional. From the treats at tea time, to the gourmet room service we had at dinner, and lastly breakfast, we most certainly ate our way through our stay.

What I loved most about the hotel is the fact that it feels like home, with an ultra luxurious feel. The beautiful setting, luxurious surrounding and personalised service made for a wonderful nights stay in the heart of the Garden Route.

Thank you Kurland Hotel for the stay over. As with all posts, the opinions are my own.
