A Guide to Skincare Come Summertime

Summertime and the livin’ is easy!

We not even halfway through Spring and it already feels like Summer with scorching temperatures close to 30 degrees. If this is only October, I would hate to know what December and January is going to be like. Having said that, we need to take extra care of our skin come summer time. I have put together a list of do’s, don’ts and a guide to summertime skin care that we should all obey.

Before we get started …

♥ What is UVA? 95% of the ultra violet radiation to hit the earth is UVA due to absorption in the atmosphere’s ozone layer. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin. They do not cause sunburn BUT are responsible for the ageing of skin, DNA damage and potentially skin cancer. UVA rays are present year round, throughout daylight hours and can penetrate through clouds and glass.

♥ What is UVB? – Strongest in summer, UVB rays are responsible for sunburn, tanning and skin aging. UVB rays are also linked to skin cancers. The intensity of UVB rays is dependent on time of day, season and location. They cannot penetrate through glass. These rays are also responsible for the formation of Vitamin D.

SUMMERTIME SKINCARE

♥ Always put sunscreen on whenever you are heading out the house even if you’re not planning on being in the sun.

♥ Your face is the most important, so always apply sunscreen to your face before you apply your makeup.

♥ Or better yet, invest in a BB cream that contains SPF.

♥ After you’ve had a swim, reapply your sunscreen, even if it is waterproof.

♥ Keep a hydrating face mist in your handbag. They’re great for cooling and refreshing your skin throughout the day.

♥ Drink a lot of water to keep your skin and body hydrated.

♥ Avoid the sun between the hours of 10am and 3pm because during these hours the UVB rays are the strongest.

♥ Don’t be stingy with the SPF – you need about two palm size portions to protect your whole body.

♥ Wear a hat and sunglasses for extra protection.

♥ Make sure you have a great after sun lotion on the ready – you never know how mean the sun can be.

♥ Don’t forget to exfoliate and moisturise your skin to keep it soft, glowy and healthy looking.

♥ For that beautiful summer glow, self tan is your best friend when you find a brand that does the job.

♥ Make sure your lip balm also has SPF inside it. Crucial!

♥ Use an SPF that protects your skin and your clothes at the same time …

Don’t you hate when you apply sunscreen under your favourite t-shirt and when you get home after a day out and about your favourite top has nasty yellow stains from the sunscreen? I know for sure that this is my worst thing about using sunscreen.

It is because of this, we all get put off from wearing sunscreen and your favourite white top to the beach, isn’t it?

NIVEA Sun have just introduced the very first sunscreen that protects clothing from this very stain. This means that the new formula includes a clothing protection complex which prevents those annoying nasty sunscreen stains on clothing. The reason sunscreen causes these nasty stains is because sunscreen contains specific UV filters which have a yellow colour due to their spectral absorption. This then leads to yellow stains on clothes.

The new formula of NIVEA Sun Protect & Moisture also provides highly effective UVA and UVB filters for immediate protection and supports the skin’s protective barrier with 24 hours of skin moisturisation, just like a body lotion.

New NIVEA Sun Protect & Moisture is available from Dischem, Clicks or any major retailers.
