Things to do on a Sunday: Take a Drive to Almost Orange

Food

There is a beautiful place just an hours drive out of Johannesburg that we simply fell in love with last year when we happened to drive past and pop in. This place is called Almost Orange and is located in Hartbeespoort. Not often do you take a Sunday drive out of the city and come across somewhere so beautiful, so peaceful and also so goddam delicious!

Almost Orange is a tapas style eatery with a craft gin/beer bar. What makes it so gorgeous though, is the setting. Set among the citrus orchards, it feels like you’re in the heart of Tuscany. The best time to visit is winter time when the trees are full of fruit. You can even pick an orange or two to take home. We’ve visited Almost Orange in summer too, and it’s just as lovely (but doesn’t allow for photos like these, ha!)

food and drinks

The menu offers a selection of platters designed to share amongst one another. Some of the platters include a Mediterranean Platter, a cheese platter or even a meat platter. The platters are big enough for two or three people to share! My favourite is definitely the cheese platter. There are also salads to choose from, like the orchard salad and a tomato salad. These are big enough to share amongst the table. The platters and salads are made with the freshest seasonal ingredients and are truly delicious.

What goes hand-in-hand with a delicious tapas style platter? An ice cold beverage. The drink menu has a great selection of wine, craft gin, as well as cocktails and craft beers. You can find everything from local to imported. There’s definitely something for everyone. My favourite though is anything pink. Ha!

So if you find yourself looking for something to do on a Sunday, take a drive out of Johannesburg nice and early and head to Almost Orange for a long lazy boozy lunch. It’s great spot for a day out with friends or even a date day with your better half! Booking is essential as it fills up very quickly. Make a reservation on the website here.
