Last week I attended a very special celebration at Stonecrest Manor here in Johannesburg. It was a celebration marking Alto Wine Estate’s#100YearsOfWineMaking. That is 100 years of producing some of the country’s finest red wines and red wine blends. Alto has a special place in the hearts of wine lovers, like myself. It is enjoyed by many whether it be at a fine dining restaurant or at home with friends.
In #100YearsOfWineMaking, there has been a total of 5 winemakers at Alto Wine Estate in Stellenbosch including Bertho van der Westhuizen, who is the current winemaker. The celebrations were hosted by Bertho himself and it was an afternoon of total and utter indulgence.
Restaurateur and creative genius of the renowned Hemelhuijs Restaurant in Cape Town, Jacques Erasmus prepared a 3 course lunch for us. The food simple but superb French style country.
The main course was a classic pot au feu de veau, which is a classic French beef stew. This was served with an autumn mesclun salad and a bowl of carrots, mushrooms, green beans and turnips. And accompanying this was a herb remoulade, tomato and mustard cream and dill pickles. While eating, we sipped on another two wines: the Alto Cabernet Sauvignon 2015/2016 and the Alto Shiraz 2016/2017.
Dessert was an almond macaroon and buttercream terrine with autumn berries. As well as a fine cheese course of brie cheese, watermelon konfyt and almond biscuit. The final wines we sipped on was Alto’s MPHS 2014 and Alto’s Signature Red Blend 2016.
It was a wonderful occasion celebrating the proud heritage of a Stellenbosch champion and all the people who have made it so.
Thank you Alto Wines – here is to another 100 years! Cheers!
My NutriBullet is one of my prized possessions in my kitchen … along with my Le Creuset coffee mug, of course. They are the two things that definitely get used the most. I bought the very first NutriBullet that was launched a good 5 years ago. So after many years of delicious smoothies and green juices, I can definitely say that it’s an appliance everyone should have for a dedicated healthier lifestyle. I was recently gifted a pink one which has now made my kitchen a lot brighter and me a lot happier. If you are a regular here, you will know pink is my favourite colour.
So after 5 years of using a NutriBullet, here are 5 reasons I love this appliance:
Reason 1:
It is very difficult to get your five to nine servings of fruit and vegetables in a day but with the NutriBullet, this is SO easy and this is why I love it. You can sneak in as many vegetables into your smoothie and you don’t realize you’re actually consuming all these vegetables. I like to use a handful or two of either spinach or kale, and then I add some celery, cucumber and even avo for a little creaminess. I also always add a banana to add sweetness and hide the taste of the spinach or kale.
Reason 2:
I love that the NutriBullet has a nutrient extraction blade. This means that the NutriBullet breaks food down to its most absorbable state releasing all the important vitamins and minerals. In scientific terms, nutrient extraction allows you to receive the highest degree of nutrition your food has to offer as it is in an easily digestive and easily absorbable form.
Reason 3:
The NutriBullet is so easy to clean and rinse after using it. So in the morning when time is not on my side, this makes making my smoothie a whole lot easier. I just throw the ingredients inside, blast my smoothie, pour it into my glass and then rinse. I kid you not, it takes no more than 10 minutes.
Reason 4:
I don’t use my NutriBullet only for smoothies, I also use it to blend soups, make pasta sauces and whip up salad dressings. I love that it is so versatile and can be used for all different things. Just know though, that when you blend soup in it, the soup must not be hot … That’s a little mistake I made one day!
Reason 5:
I am not a health freak in any way, but I do try choose to live a healthier and more active lifestyle – you can read more about this here. And the NutriBullet definitely helps with this. Just knowing that I am putting a delicious but absolutely healthy smoothie full of vitamins and minerals into my system already makes me feel better. I find that without my daily smoothie, I can’t quite function!
I call Plettenberg Bay my second home because basically it is. I have been visiting this beautiful little seaside town since I was a baby for our annual summer holiday. Now I visit three or four times a year to see family and also to unwind. You can call me a local if you want and I will be happy because I kinda am. I know everyone by name and I know the streets backwards. I also know the restaurants and hidden gems very well. Because of this I often get messages popping into my inbox that read something like this …
So the next time you visit Plett, save yourself a message, because here is my guide to the best of the best in Plett:
♥ BEST BRUNCH SPOT – LE FOURNIL DE PLETT
Le Fournil make the most amazing freshly baked goods including artisan breads and French pastries. Their almond croissants are my favourite thing in this world especially when the weather gets a little cold and rainy and I need something delicious with my coffee. My favourite sandwich for lunch is the Saint Germain! And with a glass of fresh homemade lemonade, it is delicious! Their scrambled eggs are also creamy and just perfect. In actual fact, everything on the menu is absolutely superb. And the best thing is, everything on the menu is perfect for that in between breakfast and lunch meal AKA brunch!
♥ BEST PLACE TO EAT A PIZZA AND WATCH THE SUNSET – ENRICO’S
The terrace at Enrico’s restaurant on Keurboomstrand is the most perfect spot for watching dolphins swim by and maybe a whale or two if it’s the right season as well as the most gorgeous sunset. The food at Enrico’s is also absolutely amazing! The menu offers a big selection of the best pizza and pasta dishes as well as some specialty dishes like line fish which is my favourite. They also have homemade Italian ice cream and I cannot recommend the pistachio flavour more.

♥ BEST TEA AND CAKE – OULAND ROYALE
Tea time is my favourite time and at Ouland Royale it is the best time! Ouland Royale is a magical Baroque styled barn located just outside of Plett. It is the ideal venue for weddings, celebrations and an afternoon cup of tea. The setting is absolutely beautiful, the decor is magical and the food is delicious. I highly recommend having a slice of their famous cake – either a slice of the chocolate cake, lemon cake or cheese cake. Oh and they also make the BEST scones with jam and real cream.
Plett is proudly home to some “Blue Flag” beaches. This means they have been graded and are among some of the best beaches in the world. Lookout Beach is one of them. This famous beach is my favourite because it is absolutely beautiful. The views are breathtaking especially at sunset when the waves and mountains are highlighted by the setting sun giving off the most beautiful colours.
♥ BEST SATURDAY MORNING MARKET – WILD OATS COMMUNITY FARMERS MARKET
You are going to have to wake up a little extra early on a Saturday morning for this market because it is in Sedgefield which is about an hours drive from Plett. The drive is scenic and beautiful though so it goes quickly, I promise! The Wild Oats Community Farmers Market could be the best market ever. There is just so much atmosphere and the vendors sell only local farm and homemade food products. And everything is of the highest quality and the most delicious standard. What I also love about this market is that dogs are allowed, so while you are shopping and browsing, you can cuddle a pooch or two.
The name says it all, Ice Dream Land is a dream.Ice Dream Land is an Italian Gelateria, coffee shop and restaurant serving up some of the most delicious pizza I have had since our trip to Italy as well as real gelato. I feature Ice Dream Land in this blog post, so you can read more about it there.

♥ BEST PLACE TO SOAK UP THE BEAUTIFUL VIEWS AND WATCH THE DOLPHINS SWIM BY – THE PLETTENBERG
The Plettenberg is one of my favourite hotels in South Africa. Not only is the hotel itself absolutely beautiful but so are the views. It is my favourite place in Plett to sit with a cup of tea (and a scone) or a glass of wine and just soak up the views of the sea, the lagoon and the mountains in the background. There is just something about this setting that is so tranquil and therapeutic. If luck is on your side, this is the best place to watch the dolphins swim by too.
The Plett Winelands currently includes more than 18 wine farms. While I have visited a few of them, like Packwood, Newstead and Kay and Monty Vineyards, Bramon Wine Estate is still one of my favourites. The setting is beautiful, the wine is delicious and the food is sublime. I love ordering all the mezze dishes off the menu and eating from a selection of different delicious things.
Thyme and Again is a farm stall just outside of Plett, towards Port Elizabeth, that sells homemade jams, bread, cakes, tarts, fruit, pies and so much more. This little farm stall has so much charm and is just so cozy. I highly recommend their apple tart and milk tart. Actually I highly recommend everything in the shop, even their biltong!
Remember that bubblegum flavoured ice cream we used to eat in our youth? Well I finally found ice cream as delicious from the little ice cream kiosk as the Knysna Waterfront and oh my, as I type this, I need some right now! Just one lick takes you right back to your childhood. Add a gorgeous view of the boats at the Waterfront, and you have yourself a treat.
I received a press release about a local handbag brand that I thought I must share on the blog because this is definitely something special worth sharing. This local handbag brand is called WeAllShareRoots. After reading the press release I simply fell in love with the brand and here is why:
• WeAllShareRoots is an African-inspired handbag brand. Their ethically-made bags are produced in partnership with small organizations in townships and family-owned SMEs in Cape Town. WeAllShareRoots’ bags contribute to positive change, sustainable development and poverty alleviation. They are also the first brand in Africa to use Piñatex® which is a vegan natural leather alternative, providing unique and trendy fashion pieces made from natural, sustainably-sourced, cruelty free material.
• Each bag is a unique creation, mixing local genuine leather or Piñatex® and African inspired prints (shweshwe, wax print, etc.). WeAllShareRoots’ (WASR) bags are original fashion pieces which bring together African colours, modern designs and respect for our planet and its inhabitants.
• WASR provides income and employment to underprivileged communities, through the production of their handbags. For the sewing and the assembly of the bags, they collaborate with a very small CMT, based in SeaWinds/Lavender Hill townships, facing together all the obstacles of non-conventional partnerships and fighting the lack of means.
• In 2018, aiming to go further in its ethical commitment, WASR launched a 100% vegan range of handbags. WeAllShareRoots made the choice of using Piñatex®, a new and innovative material intended to be a sustainable alternative to the mass production of leather. Made from natural wastes of the pineapple, with a low water use and reduced waste production, this material does not contain any harmful chemicals, thus enabling a responsible choice for a better future. WASR is proud to show the world that South African fashion brands can include the latest innovations in their ranges.
The bags are available in various African prints and the range includes:
• Ipanapula – The Vegan Clutch – R995 • Lekker – The Foldable Clutch – R980 • Yebo – The Small Clutch – R860 • Sharp Sharp – The Shopping Bag – R920
Who is behind WeAllShareRoots?
Elise, a former Parisian now living in South Africa, and Rudi, born and bred in Cape Town, join forces on a daily basis to develop the brand and bring the ethical and local vision they have for the project to life. Elise is passionate about African colours and tries to capture them in the bags’ designs. She is the overall coordinator for the project. Rudi lends his knowledge of the local business environment and laws to the project. As for the production, this is carried out by a small network of craftsmen, NGOs and small and medium sized businesses.
When you think of FireRoom, you think of sushi on fire, don’t you? Well that is what I think of thanks to all the snippets I see on social media. We were recently invited to wine and dine at FireRoom, and after one very delicious lunch here, I can report back that their food is totally lit.
The Fireroom at Montecasino offers a sushi and grill experience that will literally blow your mind with it’s fusion of flavours. The whole experience is like no other and is definitely very exciting! If you have never been before you are probably thinking what is this foodie going on about! Well, let me tell you more …
Sushi on fire ….
FireRoom serves up sushi like you have never experienced sushi before – on fire! As we sat down and browsed the menu, we just couldn’t decide which sushi on fire to choose. So we asked our waiter which are the most popular dishes, and he said:
Fire Roll: crispy California roll, salmon, jalapeno, kewpie mayo, cream cheese, yakitori sauce.
Tuna Crunch: tempura tuna California roll, cream cheese, crispy rice, fantasy sauce.
Rock Shrimp Tempura: salmon California roll topped with tempura prawn, fantasy sauce and caviar.
If you love sushi but not one for fusion sushi, the menu offers a big selection of traditional sushi as well as poke bowls.
What else is on the menu at The FireRoom?
Besides for sushi on fire, you will find a variety of other delicious things on the menu. Oysters, salads, stir fry, dim sum, meat dishes as well as seafood. If you’re after the whole FireRoom experience, then you can order from a selection of meat dishes that will be flamed at your table.
What did we order?
It was hard to decide because the menu is so big, but this is what we settled on:
The FireRoom is a restaurant that offers all the good things in life – cognac, cigars, whiskies and of course, a dining experience like no other. If you haven’t been yet, I suggest you visit soon, especially now that it’s winter and there is no better place to be than around the fire Ha!
I was definitely an Italian in my past life because you all know that Italian food is my absolute favourite. I have definitely eaten my way through nearly every Italian restaurant in Johannesburg but have a few that we visit and eat at all the time. So it’s only right I share these favourites with you in a blog post.
According to me, these are the best Italian restaurants in Johannesburg:
Tortellino D’Oro
Located in the Oaklands Shopping Centre in Oaklands, Tortellino D’Oro is a family run restaurant and delicatessen that has been serving up real Italian food for over 22 years. This restaurant is our absolute favourite for a romantic date night, a celebratory family occasion and a wine and dine ladies lunch. Or even for an afternoon coffee and sweet treat pick me up. Be sure to phone and make a reservation beforehand because this restaurant does fill up quickly. All the food is out of this world delicious, from the antipasto to the selection of pasta all made my hand as well as the desserts.Â
What I order: gramigna papalina, asparagus and zucchini pasta or ravioli in burnt butter and sage (pictured below).Â
Located at 74 Dunvegan Ave, Dunvegan, Edenvale, Da Graziella is an authentic home style Italian restaurant. There is nothing better than a cosy and comforting setting that makes you feel like you are in a little town in Italy. At Da Graziella the food is delicious, the atmosphere is intimate and cosy and the service is top notch! For a casual week night dinner this is a real go-to!
What I order: spaghetti arrabbiata (with a touch of cream), the spaghetti seafood in tinfoil or beef lasagna.Â
Not often do you walk into a restaurant and receive such personal service like you do at La Trinita in Kyalami. As you walk in, Lala welcomes you with a very big hug, she then seats you at your table and tells you about all the special dishes. The best part is if you want to make up your own dish, Lala will happily allow you to. Like, for example, if like me you can’t decide which gnocchi to go for, Lala will do half and half. This way you really get the best of both worlds! For a Saturday night dinner with friends, this is the spot!
What I order: gnocchi because hands down La Trinita make the best gnocchi.
Where: Kyalami Downs Shopping Centre, Kyalami Boulevard & Main Rd, Kyalami Park
Sale Pepe is another favourite for all the right reasons. We love the coziness and the food, obviously. We also love that the portions here are so big that either we share one big pasta dish between two of us or we each order our own and have leftovers for the next day. Every dish on the menu is absolutely delicious and is prepared by the chef himself using proper Italian ingredients.Â
What I always order: Linguini Alla Vegetariana – this pasta dish is so tasty with all the garlic and herbs!
Where: Morningview Shopping Centre, South Road, Morningside, Sandton
I love getting all dressed up in winter because it’s all about the thick jerseys, knitted scarves, cozy jackets and stylish boots. I have a wardrobe full of boots, but one can never have enough pairs, so here’s a few pairs that I’ve added to my wishlist this winter:
I feel like taking another drive to The Midlands just so we can stop at The Windmills Kitchen for another absolutely delicious lunch!
What is The Windmills Kitchen?
The Windmills Kitchen can be described as a collaborative food hall serving up delicious artisan food. It is the perfect stop off for the hungry traveller travelling between Durban and Johannesburg because it is conveniently located at the turn off for Nottingham Road.
There are a number of different food stalls all serving up different cuisines using quality ingredients and produce sourced from the local farmers in the area. The best part is that you won’t find any fast food joints like you do at all garages throughout South Africa.
The Windmills Kitchen is huge and has an entire outdoor play area for the kids and the dogs. Yip, it is pet friendly!
What food will you get at The Windmills Kitchen?
There is a huge variety of foods to choose from because there are 15 kitchens each serving a different cuisine! There is definitely something for everyone.
Here is a list of some of the different foods you will get:
JUICE BREW – for freshly squeezed juices and smoothies
HEY BREW – a coffee bar that serves fairtrade coffee and freshly baked pastries
WINDMILLS PIE COMPANY – delicious pies made from locally sourced ingredients
MR NAIDOO’S GENUINE DURBAN CURRY – real Durban curry with a a choice of either curry ‘n rice or bunny chows
SPRING CHICKEN – serves up free range chicken cooked to perfection
THE FREE RANGE BURGER COMPANY – a choice of smash burgers or farm wors rolls
FARINA DI GRANA PIZZERIA – traditional Neapolitan style pizza using imported Italian flour and tomatoes
WILD CHILD GELATO – fresh gelato made daily
THE BREAKFAST BAR – offers breakfast until 13:30
THE EARL OF SANDWICH -freshly baked filled baguettes and toasted sandwiches
SALAD BAR – you can get delicious seasonal salads and a Midlands cheese board
You will also find the Marketplace which sells biltong, soulflour breads, freshly baked cakes and all other delicious snacks.
How does it work?
As you walk into the restaurant, you are given an identifier tag. Anything you order and buy from The Windmills Kitchen will be placed on one bill – this means that you and your family can order from any of the stalls and only pay once when you exit the restaurant at one of the cashiers.
The Windmills Kitchen with its easy access from the N3 highway is open from 06h00 to 17h30 every day. There is also a Grab and Go section which stays open till 20h00 (it’s complimented by a picnic area, a kid’s play area, clean, high-class toilets and doggy poop pens).
So the next time you take a drive to Durban or any of the surrounding areas, make a stop at The Windmills Kitchen for a delicious quick farm-to-table stop! I definitely recommend a pie and gravy from WINDMILLS PIE COMPANY, it was so delicious!

Sunday lunch is a special occasion for us – we like to go somewhere nice for something wholesome that will leave us feeling happy and satisfied. So a few weeks ago we went to Hussar Grill in Morningside and enjoyed a very special Sunday lunch here.
Hussar Grill is one of our favourite restaurants in Cape Town that we make sure to eat at every time we visit the mother city. So when Hussar Grill finally opened up in Morningside Johannesburg we got so excited.
Hussar Grill
Hussar Grill first opened its doors in 1964. Fast forward 54 years later and there are now 18 grill rooms across South Africa serving up some of South Africa’s best steaks. It is no wonder they are now regarded as one of South Africa’s premier grill rooms thanks to their specialty steaks and award winning wine selection.
What did we eat?
The question on all of your minds is what did we eat? Well we indulged in the most delicious 3 course meal that we are still raving about a few weeks later. The food was exceptional, the service was fantastic and the atmosphere was old school cozy.
Wine of choice:
La Borie Shiraz.
Starter:
Fried crumbed camembert served with cranberry jelly.
Cured springbok loin carpaccio.
Mains:
Lamb shank slowly roasted in a deep red wine jus served with mash potato.
Hussar Carpetbagger which is fillet mignon stuffed with a combination of smoked oysters, cheddar cheese and topped off with a brandy and wholegrain mustard sauce.
Dessert:
Rich and chocolatey chocolate fondant.
From starters to mains, each dish was absolutely delicious. Of course though, the show stopper was the chocolate fondant, but only because I LOVE all things chocolate.
If you are not a meat eater, the big menu has a great selection of non-meat dishes.
So if you are looking for a delicious Sunday lunch spot, pop into your nearest Hussar Grill because you will be left feeling happy and satisfied … And possibly wanting another chocolate fondant pudding, like me 🙂
The other day I asked on Twitter and Instagram the following question: “What are you watching on Netflix at the mo? (Obvs when you have electricity)” and received a swarm of replies. After reading everyone’s reply, there are definitely 5 shows that are trending right now that everyone is watching. Here they are:
1. DIRTY JOHN
Debra Newell has a perfect life — from the outside — she’s successful, beautiful and lives in Newport Beach, one of California’s most desirable coastal cities. The only thing missing from her life is love, so when she meets the charismatic, handsome and charming Dr. John Meehan, she is swept off her feet in a whirlwind romance. Her daughters, Terra and Veronic, set out to prove that he’s just a conman after they are displeased at the fast-tracked relationship and decide to investigate their mother’s new beau for themselves. As Debra gets drawn deeper into his lies, the psychological manipulation has consequences for the entire family.
2. UMBRELLA ACADEMY
On one day in 1989, 43 infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by billionaire industrialist Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who creates the Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. In their teenage years, though, the family fractures and the team disbands. Fast forward to the present time, when the six surviving members of the clan reunite upon the news of Hargreeves’ passing. They work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father’s death, but divergent personalities and abilities again pull the estranged family apart, and a global apocalypse is another imminent threat. The series is based on a collection of comics and graphic novels created and written by My Chemical Romance lead singer Gerard Way.
3. THE DISAPPEARANCE OF MADELEINE MCCANN
This documentary takes a detailed look at the disappearance of 3-year-old Madeleine McCann, who vanished while on holiday with her family.
4. THE ORDER
When Belgrave University student Jack Morton joins a fabled secret society, the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose, he is thrust into a world of magic, monsters and intrigue. Out to avenge his mother’s death, he uncovers dark family secrets and lands in an underground battle being waged between werewolves and practitioners of dark magic. Assisting Jack in the fight is Alyssa, a tour guide at Belgrave and fellow member of the Order, which is led by Jack’s estranged father.
5. ISN’T IT ROMANTIC
Natalie (Rebel Wilson) is a New York architect who works hard to get noticed at her job, but is more likely to deliver coffee and bagels than design the city’s next skyscraper. Things go from bad to weird when she gets knocked unconscious during a subway mugging and magically wakes up to find herself in an alternate universe. Always cynical about love, Natalie’s worst nightmare soon comes true when she suddenly discovers that she’s playing the leading lady in a real-life romantic comedy.
I watched and LOVED Isn’t It Romantic. It was such a feel good movie with some very funny parts. I also love Rebel Wilson in it! I am about to start watching Dirty John to see why everyone is talking about this show!
What will you be watching from this list?
PS: Did you know you can download shows off Netflix to watch at a later stage when/if you not connected to WiFi? I am so out of the loop and did not know this was possible until Netflix told me about it on Twitter! This makes loadshedding so much more bearable! 🙂
Three of my favourite things include tea time, freshly baked treats and exploring new places that offer a delicious high tea. There is a new boulangerie and patisserie that has just opened up it’s doors in Hyde Park Corner called Just Teddy. I got to explore everything this new spot has to offer on it’s first day of opening. And I am happy to report back that Just Teddy offers all three of my favourite things … and more!
JUST TEDDY
If, like me, you are familiar with the foodie scene of Johannesburg, you will definitely recognize the name Just Teddy. After Teddy Zaki’s huge success on The Great South African Bake Off, he opened up his very own French-style bakery called Just Teddy. The location of this bakery is at The Sheds at 1Fox in Johannesburg. It is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm as well as the last Friday of the month from 12pm to 10pm.
Fast forward a good few years and now Just Teddy has expanded to Hyde Park Corner with the coziest yet super glamorous and very French-style patisserie cafe.
I was invited by the Hello Joburg team to experience what this patisserie has to offer. After a whole morning of trying just about everything, I can definitely say that Just Teddy will become my new favourite hangout.
On top of all of this, you will be able to sit down and order food off a menu, indulge in a delicious ice cream or two or treat yourself to a decadent afternoon high tea.
This new spot is a very special place and you have to visit to see why.
But for now, let’s let the photos do all the talking …
