Walkersons Hotel and Spa

Walkersons Hotel and Spa is a charming country hotel located just 10 kilometres outside of picturesque Dullstroom. The hotel is set in the rolling hills of the Mpumalanga highlands and boasts endless views and unrivalled serenity. We were lucky to call this place our home away from home this past weekend. We’ve visited many places but not one where this description is more apt.

Before I tell you about Walkersons, let me tell you about Dullstroom.

Dullstroom is a quaint little town halfway between Johannesburg and the Kruger National Park. It is also, arguably, South Africa’s fly-fishing capital. We always use Dullstroom as our halfway stop on our annual family trip to the Kruger National Park but never have we stayed longer than one night in this cozy town.

Walkersons

We drove through the Walkersons gate on a rainy Friday afternoon for our two night stay. The winding roads led us past trout dams, an aeroplane landing strip, the hotel’s spa and a helicopter landing pad and finally to the grand English-manor-style country hotel. After we checked in, we were escorted to our lakeside suite. We unpacked and made ourselves very much at home.

Walkersons is everything a country hotel should be and more. With an intimate atmosphere, spacious but cozy rooms and so much historical charm, we instantly fell in love with this memorable place.

Wining & Dining

Wining at Walkersons is an experience in itself. Choosing a bottle of wine from the wine cellar every evening of our stay was definitely one of the highlights of our weekend. The wine cellar is expertly-curated and the atmosphere inside is like being in an actual wine-cellar underground. It is dark, intimate and so exciting, if you’re a wine lover like us. Our carefully selected red wines paired perfectly with the delicious food, the rainy weather and the fireplace.

The food at Walkersons was a real treat. For lunch, we lapped up homemade soup with freshly baked bread at The Terrace restaurant overlooking the lush gardens while watching the rain fall down. Come dinner time, each night, we headed to the Flying Scotsmans restaurant, with our carefully selected red wine in hand, and enjoyed a four course meal. The food was exceptional and the atmosphere was truly romantic. I loved that we were even given a palette cleanser of sorbet that was so delicious I was tempted to ask for a full portion of it for dessert.

Things to do

Walkersons offers numerous things to do. From scenic walks and hiking trails, to mountain biking and even horse riding. But let’s not forget though, an absolute must, is to try your hand at fly-fishing in Walkersons’ famous trout dams. Another thing that should be added to your list of things to do is visit the Spa for an ultimate pure self-indulgent escape.

There is so much to do and although we couldn’t do it all because of the rain, just being in the countryside, with breathtakingly beautiful views, was amazing! I know for sure we’ll be back to to explore the hiking trails and do some trout fishing.

If you really want to escape the city and head straight for the countryside, Dullstroom, and in particular Walkersons, is the ideal place for this. The drive is a little more than 2 hours long, but with some great music playing in the car, it felt even shorter. Our weekend at Walkersons was truly idyllic and just what we needed. We ate delicious food paired with even more delicious wine, we soaked up the serenity and peacefulness of such a beautiful place and come Sunday, we didn’t want to leave.

If you want a weekend just like this, visit the website here, and book your stay.

Two simply delicious salad recipes

2

Before soup season starts, here are two salads I couldn’t get enough of this summer.

You get two kinds of people in this world – a salad eater and a non-salad eater. I like to say I’m a bit of both. I find salads can be boring, bland and just not satisfying. But if a salad is crispy, tasty and just bursting with deliciousness, then I am a salad eater through and through.

In an effort to make healthier decisions this year, I have had these two salads on heavy rotation. They are both easy to make, and I often have all of the ingredients on hand.

GREEK-ISH SALAD

what you need:

  • lettuce
  • cucumber
  • tomato
  • feta cheese cubes
  • olives

what to do:

Chop the lettuce. Peel and dice the cucumber. Chop the tomato. Combine everything in a bowl. Add the feta cheese cubes and olives. I like to chop up the olives so it mixes in.

salad dressing:

I use olive oil, balsamic vinegar and salt and pepper. Sometimes I’ll just use lemon juice.

ITALIAN-ISH SALAD

what you need:

  • lettuce
  • cucumber
  • tomato
  • mozzarella cheese
  • pickled cucumbers

what to do:

Chop the lettuce. Peel and dice the cucumber. Chop the tomato. Combine everything in a bowl. Add the mozzarella cheese and the pickled cucumbers. I like to use Israeli pickled cucumbers (the Beit Hashita one’s from my local Spar) and I chop them into little cubes.

salad dressing:

I use the juice of the Israeli pickled cucumbers and a little bit of salt and pepper. You can use any brand of pickled cucumbers, they’re all generally sourish and tasty.

Which salad will you be making first?

10 Feel Good Movies

Grab the popcorn …

Over the holidays, we watched a lot of movies. We’d come home from dinner, make a pot of popcorn and snuggle up on the couch and pull an all-nighter (the best thing about holidays is not having an alarm set the next morning). From a few new movies, to some old school classics, and even hilarious comedies, we watched them all. My favourite though were the old school ones; the ones that leave you feeling good at the end. I’ve put together a list of these feel good movies, so if you’re sick in bed, feeling down or just need something fun (funny!) to watch, I recommend one of these:

  1. Bridesmaids – I have watched this movie maybe a thousand times but it is still as funny as if I am watching it for the first time! Melissa McCarthy is one of my favourite actresses, I have loved her since the days of Gilmore Girls. Her character in Bridesmaids is absolutely hilarious! One of my favourite scenes is when she takes all the party favours … the labrador puppies! Ha!
  2. Julie & Julia – Meryl Streep is just brilliant in this movie! If you’re into French cooking, like I am, this movie will make you the hungriest. The movie is about Julie who writes an online journal (AKA blog) documenting her vow to cook all of Julia Child’s 524 recipes in 365 days. Things get interesting and I love it all!
  3. The Holiday – This is everyones favourite movie come Christmas time, but its my favourite all year round! Who doesn’t love Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet? I also love how cozy the U.K. looks, it makes me want to just snuggle up with my tea, blanket and imagine its snowing outside!
  4. Maid in Manhattan – A love story with Jennifer Lopez set in New York. I remember watching this for the first time when I was young and I just fell in love with J Lo, New York and love stories. The music from this movie is also so good, that I still play the soundtrack in my car when I’m driving.
  5. Because I Said So – Dianne Keaton, Mandy Moore and Lauren Graham (from Gilmore Girls) are amazing together, they just make this movie! I love the storyline, its so cute and girly that you feel SO good!
  6. The Hundred Foot Journey – This is my all time favourite movie, ever! It’s fiery and full of love, delicious food, culture and everything in between. Not only do you feel good after this movie but you also feel inspired!
  7. Mrs Doubtfire – A movie that will make you laugh and make you cry, Mrs Doubtfire is an absolute gem!
  8. Crazy/Beautiful – Kirsten Dunst was one of my favourite actresses growing up especially when it came to dramas or romance like Crazy/Beautiful. She didn’t feature in many films though but the ones she did were so good!
  9. Serendipity – The cheesiest love story that every girl who believes in love and fate should watch! There’s just something about this movie that makes me want to watch it over and over …
  10. Age of Adaline – The most beautiful movie featuring the very beautiful Blake Lively. The story line is absolutely magica with a fantasy love story.

What are some of your favourite feel good movies?

AtholPlace Restaurant welcomes Chef Omar

Within AtholPlace Hotel, a five star boutique hotel in the heart of vibrant Sandton, is a hidden gem of a restaurant called AtholPlace Restaurant. This restaurant is one of a kind. It is known for its personalised service, refined dining and a gorgeous setting, so it is no wonder it was awarded the best restaurant in Johannesburg.

Chef Omar

The Morukuru Family have recently announced the appointment of Omar Koenen as the new head chef of AtholPlace Restaurant. Hailing from the Netherlands, Chef Omar’s passion for food ignited in his teens when his first stint was working weekends. He then trained at various Bib Gourmand and Michelin-rated restaurants in both the Netherlands and Belgium.

While on holiday in Cape Town in 2015 he fell in love with South Africa. He secured himself a position at Cape Town’s most prestigious Ellerman House as sous chef. He then returned to the Netherlands for a year before returning to South Africa to take up a new position at AtholPlace Restaurant.

Chef Omar has a particular passion for the complex flavour combinations found in Asian and Indian foods. He also likes to explore various techniques using foams, espumas and oils. And some of his favourite flavours include saffron and truffle.

Chef’s Table Luncheon

AtholPlace Restaurant has been on my radar and at the top of my foodie list since forever. When I got an invitation to enjoy a chef’s table luncheon with Chef Omar, I most certainly did not hesitate to RSVP a yes within minutes.

We arrived at AtholPlace Hotel about 12 o’ clock on a Wednesday. Upon arrival we were treated to bubbly as well as some very delicious amuse bouche in the intimate bar and library area. From tomato parmesan, to baby taco’s with pulled pork, and lastly beetroot horseradish, we knew with these tasters, Chef Omar was preparing us for an absolute foodie fiesta.

We were then escorted to the restaurant where we were totally wowed. The restaurant overlooks the manicured gardens and a glistening swimming pool surrounded by tropical palm trees. Sitting in the heart of bustling Sandton with a view like this definitely made us feel like we’re on a tropical island somewhere.

Once seated, Chef Omar took us on an absolute culinary journey – one we’ve never quite been on before. It is evident from the flavourful dishes we were served that he has so much passion and enthusiasm in the kitchen.

Everything we ate was beautiful – both visually and taste wise. My personal favourite dish of the day was the starter of squid with kimchi, corn, mirin gel and ponzu. This was served with a glass of Thelema Chardonnay and together the flavours were sublime. We also enjoyed sea bass with sweet potato, saffron, fennel and smoked paprika. On the mains side we enjoyed sweet breads with truffle, shimiji and celery. This was my first time trying sweet breads and after Chef Omar spoiling my tastebuds, this definitely won’t be the last. Another dish that stood out for me was the beef ratatouille – a simple but superb dish served with Delaire Graff Botmaskop.

The best for last … Dessert

For dessert we savoured every spoonful of a mango yoghurt with mascarpone and lime. This was paired with a Lourensford Honey Liquor and it definitely complimented the tangy flavours of the mango yoghurt. We were served dessert in the gorgeous Villa, which was the perfect ending to a perfect luncheon.

The carefully crafted menu changes regularly so every dining experience will be unique and exciting. If this post has left you salivating, then I suggest you make a reservation at AtholPlace Restaurant sooner rather than later.

Let’s chat about my favourite home appliance

0

From washing the dishes, to vacuuming the carpets and doing the laundry, these are definitely not my favourite chores to do around the house. I always want to try take the easy way out and when home appliances are all for quick and easy, why not praise them? Ever since the Philips Steam&Go Handheld Garment Steamer landed on my desk to be put to the test, I have found that steaming my clothes with a handheld steamer is definitely the easy way out when it comes to releasing the crease.

The Philips Steam&Go is a fantastic way to avoid using the iron and avoid taking your clothes to the dry cleaner. Not only is it easy to use, but it takes a quick 45 seconds to heat up. It has a detachable water tank which is easy to fill up. You can use it on normal clothes, like a blouse, thicker garments, like a jersey or coat, and even on delicate fabrics like silk. It comes with a brush accessory that is to be used on the thicker garments, like a jersey pictured below.

What I love about this handheld steamer is how lightweight it is. As a traveller always on the road, its so easy to take in my luggage. The best part is knowing I won’t have creased clothing when I arrive at my destination.

tips for using a clothes steamer

After putting this Philips Steam&Go to the test these past few weeks, I can definitely share some tips I’ve learnt with you:

  • Using a clothes steamer takes a certain amount of practice and getting used to.
  • Instead of pressing the clothes steamer hard against your clothes, rather lean it forward. This ensures the steam has somewhere to go.
  • Hold the steamer with one hand and with your other hand hold the item of clothing taut.
  • Move the clothes steamer up and down slowly.
  • Start with something easy so you can get the knack of it.

Things to do on a Sunday: Take a Drive to Almost Orange

There is a beautiful place just an hours drive out of Johannesburg that we simply fell in love with last year when we happened to drive past and pop in. This place is called Almost Orange and is located in Hartbeespoort. Not often do you take a Sunday drive out of the city and come across somewhere so beautiful, so peaceful and also so goddam delicious!

Almost Orange is a tapas style eatery with a craft gin/beer bar. What makes it so gorgeous though, is the setting. Set among the citrus orchards, it feels like you’re in the heart of Tuscany. The best time to visit is winter time when the trees are full of fruit. You can even pick an orange or two to take home. We’ve visited Almost Orange in summer too, and it’s just as lovely (but doesn’t allow for photos like these, ha!)

food and drinks

The menu offers a selection of platters designed to share amongst one another. Some of the platters include a Mediterranean Platter, a cheese platter or even a meat platter. The platters are big enough for two or three people to share! My favourite is definitely the cheese platter. There are also salads to choose from, like the orchard salad and a tomato salad. These are big enough to share amongst the table. The platters and salads are made with the freshest seasonal ingredients and are truly delicious.

What goes hand-in-hand with a delicious tapas style platter? An ice cold beverage. The drink menu has a great selection of wine, craft gin, as well as cocktails and craft beers. You can find everything from local to imported. There’s definitely something for everyone. My favourite though is anything pink. Ha!

So if you find yourself looking for something to do on a Sunday, take a drive out of Johannesburg nice and early and head to Almost Orange for a long lazy boozy lunch. It’s great spot for a day out with friends or even a date day with your better half! Booking is essential as it fills up very quickly. Make a reservation on the website here.

Five of my Favourite Things

1

It’s that time again, where I share five of my favourite things.

shoes

We already know how much I love the colour pink. But what you don’t know is that I love leopard print just as much. Now picture my happiness when the colour pink and leopard print joined forces and came together as the most beautiful pair of shoes I have ever owned. I love wearing them with a pair of jeans and a pink jersey or even with a black dress. They are strikingly pretty and I always get told they’re gorgeous when I wear them. I bought them from Marcha Ballerina along with a gold pair, a nude pair and a plain pink pair. I live in pumps and these are just the best! The quality is amazing, they’re so comfortable and they complete any outfit. So go have a look on the website and see which pretty pair catches your eye.

lip balm

I have been buying Labello since I can remember and whenever a new one comes out I definitely add it to my collection. Labello recently launched a new Vanilla Buttercream flavour (R25 from all major retailers) that I HAD TO HAVE. Firstly, because Vanilla Buttercream. And secondly, because Vanilla Buttercream. It smells just like a vanilla cupcake oozing with vanilla buttercream icing. You all know I live for these kinds of cupcakes! Besides for the scent, it does a great job ensuring your lips feel moisturised and soft.

book

I don’t believe in new years resolutions per se, but I do believe in making conscious decisions for a healthier and better lifestyle when a new year rolls in. 2018 is the year I am going to finally swop my morning lie in’s for morning walks and my slippers for my. I also want to drink a lot more water, eat a lot less chocolate and eat a lot more vegetables.

When I came back from holiday there was a parcel waiting for me with the new Kayla Itsines The Bikini Body Motivation & Habits Guide inside. What perfect timing because this book is all about breaking bad habits. Kayla addresses what stops us from following through with our health goals and how to overcome obstacles. The book has over 200 absolutely delicious recipes, a 28 day meal plan and a 28 day workout poster. This book will surely keep me on the right track with my conscious decision for a healthier 2018! I have already put the 28 day workout poster up in my study, which is a good start!

snack

In my quest to make healthier decisions (and stop my chocolate-a-day habit that I have had since forever) I am reaching for the “healthier snacks” come snack time. I discovered Sarah Graham’s Power Balls at my local Wellness Warehouse (R20 each) not so long ago and had to buy one of each flavour. You get Coconut Bliss which is a little ball of creamy coconut goodness and Cranberry and Cacao which is a little ball of dark chocolate yumminess. My favourite flavour though is Coconut Bliss. The ingredients are almonds, dates, desiccated coconut and pumpkin seeds. I love that they’re loaded with vitamins and minerals, high in natural protein and full of fibre! With a cup of tea, they make for a blissful afternoon treat!

bath time treat

When I told my blogger bestie Siobhan from Sugar Spice Blog the other day I was suffering from terrible neck and shoulder pain, she kindly advised me to have an epsom salts bath. So the person I am googled all the benefits of an epsom salts bath (read here for the health benefits), then ran to Dischem to get some and came home with at least five different kinds. The one that I cannot stop bathing in though is this one from Dr Teal’s. It is a foaming bath with pure epsom salt and coconut oil. It smells absolutely delicious. The moment you sink into the bath you’re transported to a tropical island and you just feel instantly at ease and relaxed. It is just heavenly! Available from Dischem for R120.

Book Club: Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

0

Every now and then you find a book that draws you in from the very start. From the reviews you read online, to the first few paragraphs and even the characters. When you find a book like this, you devour it while trying to savour it. This is exactly how I felt reading Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.
It is no wonder this was everyone’s favourite book of 2017.

The story of Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

The story is about 30 year old Eleanor Oliphant. She works as a finance clerk at a graphics design company. She follows the same routine everyday. She spends her lunch break doing newspaper crosswords. She makes the same dinner every night. On Friday nights she indulges in frozen pizza and on weekends she downs two bottles of vodka.

Eleanor is socially awkward and lives a sad lonely life. She takes everything people say at face value and has a direct and formal manner of speaking.

She had a hard upbringing and has the scars to show.

One day this all changes. When Eleanor and the IT guy from her office, Raymond, happen to be at the same place at the same time, they are both drawn into a random act of kindness. From this moment on they share a connection and she slowly but surely starts to veer away from her everyday routine and welcome more people into her life. As she gets to know the people, she starts to value their friendship and their role in her life.

Some parts of the book are hilariously funny, like when she goes to the salon and has a manicure for the very first time. And some parts are heart wrenching sad. But the overall feeling is heartfelt compassion. This is a beautiful story of recovery, acceptance, love and hope, and it will stay with me forever. Eleanor will find her way into your heart with her warmth and kindness, like she did mine.

Without saying more, everyone should read Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine at least once in their life!

Some of my favourite quotes

♥ “LOL could go and take a running jump. I wasn’t made for illiteracy; it simply didn’t come naturally.”

♥ “Time only blunts the pain of loss. It doesn’t erase it.”

♥ “I feel sorry for beautiful people. Beauty, from the moment you possess it, is already slipping away, ephemeral. That must be difficult.”

♥ “I had to google “mofo” and must confess to being slightly alarmed by the result.”

♥ “Life is all about taking decisive action, darling. Whatever you want to do, do it— whatever you want to take, grab it. Whatever you want to bring to an end, END IT. And live with the consequences.”

Perfect high tea at the Palazzo Montecasino

I recently enjoyed a taste of the Palazzo’s perfect high tea.

The Palazzo Montecasino is renowned for being one of the most beautiful and romantic hotels in Johannesburg. It absolutely oozes with opulence and elegance. The hotel has recently introduced a high tea of the same calibre, which has been created by newly appointed Head Pastry Chef Marco Gaspar.

The high tea is a delectable and indulgent affair. Think tiers of sweet and savoury treats. From lime cheesecake mousse with raspberry jam and orange soft cake, to dark chocolate berry tart, mango coconut custard choux puff, macaroons, lemon meringue tart to dark chocolate slices. The savoury treats include smoked salmon and ricotta cheese quiche, duck and cherry pie and chicken pastrami sandwiches. Always a favourite at high tea though is scones, which are served with Chantilly cream, strawberry jam and cheese.

To accompany the treats you can order yourself a fresh pot of flavourful tea or a delicious cup of coffee.

Everything was just so moreish but I absolutely loved  the indulgent dark chocolate slice. I am a chocoholic after all.

I certainly don’t need an excuse to indulge in high tea, especially a perfect one, and neither do you. So grab the girls, your mom, or even your man, and treat yourself to an afternoon of blissful indulgence away from the pressures of life. I know I am going to!

High Tea at the Palazzo is available every day from 2pm to 5pm, at R245 per person.

Booking is essential on 011 510 300 or click here for more information.
