3 yummy snacks you can make with the Philips Airfryer

0

From experimenting with new recipes to making our favourite classics, most of my spare time is spent in the kitchen. If I’m not in the kitchen, then I’m in front of the TV watching the cooking channel. I love being in the kitchen. Whether it’s cooking or baking or even putting a new gadget to the test, like the new Philips Viva Collection Airfryer TurboStar that recently found its way into my kitchen.

The question you’re probably asking yourself is …

What is the Philips Viva Collection Airfryer TurboStar?

It is a hot air cooker that offers a healthier alternative to deep fat frying. With this Airfryer it is now easier to prepare all your favourite foods in a much healthier way, without compromising on the taste. The capabilities of the Airfyer are pretty amazing; not only can you fry your favourite things, but the TurboStar technology also lets you grill, bake and roast, ensuring little to no oil is used. The best part is, with the new technology, you don’t have to warm up the machine before you want to use it. It’s ready to go from the moment you put your ingredients inside!

We’ve had our Philips Airfryer for a while now and I must say, it has definitely been put to use. I think we’ve used it more than we’ve used the toaster and that’s a lot. Ha! Simply because it is just SO easy to use. There’s absolutely no mess, it is easy to clean, and the food is just as tasty as if it were made any other way. One of our favourite meals at home is either chops and chips or steak and chips. I kid you not, this machine has made my life so much more easier when it comes to frying the chips. It takes, and I’m not even joking, 20 minutes. There isn’t oil splattered all over the stove top and I don’t have a million pots to wash.

Before I get carried away telling you all the perks of the machine (there are a lot and we’ll save that for another post!), I want to share with you 3 easy snacks I make with the Airfryer. Because I work from home, I tend to get extra peckish throughout the day and like to have yummy snacks on hand. So without further ado here they are …

Something salty: POTATO CRISPS

You know when that craving for something salty strikes but you don’t know what to have? Well these potato crisps will just hit that spot. And with two ingredients, you won’t get anything easier or healthier. And the best part? They’re ready in 20 minutes, so your afternoon snack is sorted!

All you need is 2 or 3 potatoes and half a tablespoon of olive oil.

Slice the potatoes into very thin slices. I leave the skin on the potatoes to add that rustic look.

Pour the olive oil onto the potato slices and then toss the slices in the olive so they’re all coated.

Place your potato slices into your air fryer at 390 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

The time can vary depending on your fryer so check them around the 20 minute mark.

Once they’re deliciously brown and crispy, remove the chips from the airfryer.

Sprinkle a little salt and enjoy!

Tip: Sprinkle a little salt and vinegar and you have yourself your favourite salt and vinegar crisps.

Something healthy: SWEET POTATO FRIES

Sweet potato fries are the bees knees. Seriously! They are so nutritiously yummy that we could eat them at every meal time!

The health benefits of sweet potatoes are as follows: they are an excellent sort of vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin B6. They are a good source of potassium, dietary fibre, niacin, vitamin B1, B2 and phosphorous. I bet you didn’t know that!

To make sweet potato fries, all you need is 2 large sweet potatoes and a drizzle of olive oil.

Wash the sweet potatoes, peel them and cut into fries. Put into a large bowl, drizzle with the olive oil and then toss well until the fries are all coated in olive oil. Put the fries into the airfryer basket, cook at 180 degrees for 20 minutes.

After 10 minutes, quickly take the basket out, toss the fries around, then put back into airfryer.

Once they’re done, take them and serve piping hot!

How easy and quick to make sweet potato fries?

Something sweet: BANANA CHIPS

When I visit my local supermarket, the one thing I always have to put into my trolley is a packet or two of banana chips. They make for the best afternoon snack and they’re kinda addictive. I tried making my own in the airfryer and although they’re not as crispy as the store bought banana chips, they’re just as delicious. Since making the first batch of banana chips, I have had to make a few more, because the boyfriend is just as obsessed with them as me.

All you need for these are 2 bananas (or more) and a tablespoon of coconut oil. Peel the bananas, slice into thin slices, put into a bowl and then pour the coconut oil. Mix the slices around in the coconut oil, but make sure you’re extra gentle otherwise you’ll find a bowl of banana mash in front of you. Making sure each slice of banana is coated in coconut oil, put them into the airfryer basket and cook at 18o degrees for 20 minutes.

Once they’re brown and crispy, take them out and lay on a plate. Enjoy!

Tip: sprinkle cinnamon over the chips and you’ll have yourself one very yummy snack!

Which will you be making first with your Philips Airfryer?

Moisturisers your skin will love this Summer

summer is here … tra la la la!

With the summer holidays fast approaching, it means we’ll be showing more skin. Hello short skirts, sleeveless tops and even bikinis. But what happens if your skin is a little on the dry side and is still baring the brunt of winter? Then you should be taking extra good care of it and moisturising every night. You should be buffing, scrubbing and lathering up with the lotion.

In this post I have rounded up five moisturisers that I swear by and that your skin will love this summer. With these five products, you’ll be rocking that summer outfit in no time!

Eucerin Original Extra Thick Creme

Perfect for: very dry comprised skin conditions

Price: R179.99 for 45 grams

Available from: Dischem and Clicks

This is an extra thick creme that was specifically developed for people suffering with very dry and comprised skin associated with eczema, psoriasis or drying medication. This tub of extra rich and thick creme has come to my rescue and has helped ease my psoriasis. I have tried just about everything on the very dry patchy skin and so far, this is the only cream that has kept it bay. The creme is an emollient-rich formula that seals in all the moisture. What I love most about is, is that it contains no paragons, fragrance or colourants. These are usually what effects a skin condition and aggravates it. I tend to apply this creme on the very dry parts – my back where there’s a bit of psoriasis, my elbows and my knees. I’ll also apply it all over my body once a week just to give my skin that extra bit of moisture.

Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Glow

Perfect for: everyday use

Price: R36.95 for 400ml

Available from: Dischem and Clicks

Vaseline products have a special place in my heart and I am sure in yours too? This was the first brand I started using as a teen and have been in love with ever since. It does the job of moisturising your skin and leaving it feeling super soft and nourished. Out of all the different variants by Vaseline, I must say though that pure cocoa butter is my favourite. I love the scent, it has an obvious coco fragrance, which is delicious! The cream itself spreads and absorbs easily. I like to use it every night after a bath/shower because I put on my pyjamas. My skin is always left feeling soft, moisturised and smelly yummy!

L’Occitane Whipped Body Cream

Perfect for: an indulgent luxurious treat on your skin

Price: R435 for 125ml

Available from: L’Occitane

You know those nights when you want to have the most gorgeous bubble bath and just want to indulge? So you light all the candles, pour your glass of wine, hop into the bath and use your high-end products reserved for a special occasion. Well this is one of those products that you’ll use on those nights because L’Occitane Whipped Body Cream is just pure indulgence!

This body cream contains 10% Shea Butter which may seem like a little but it is definitely enough as it moisturises my skin like a dream. It smells absolutely delicious and the texture is definitely like whipped cream. When you open the tin it kinda looks like meringue, ha! This cream is a but pricey but like I said above, its only used on special occasions when your mind and body are craving absolute indulgence!

Lush Sympathy for the Skin

Perfect for: Everyday use

Price: R225 for 240g

Available from: Lush

Out of all of Lush’s body lotions, this is one of my favourites that I buy over and over. The cream is very thick in consistency but a little goes a long way. It is so deliciously rich and hydrating on the skin. The scent is a combination of vanilla and banana, but what I love is that it is not overly sweet or synthetic smelling, and is rather quite natural. My skin is always left feeling hydrated, healed, nourished and moisturised. I also love that it doesn’t aggravate or irritate my dry patches from my psoriasis but instead makes them look visibly less dry! If you’re in the market for an extra delicious cream this summer, this is the one! I promise, you’ll thank me later 😉

Lipidol After Shower Oil

Perfect for: Replenishing the skin’s natural oily layer that may have been stripped away during swimming.

Price: R90.95

Available from: Clicks

The Lipidol range is a collection of oil-based products that has been launched by the makers of Bio Oil. The makers believe that oil is best for moisture retention in the skin as it supplements the skin’s natural oily layer. And you know what? They’re 100% correct. It feels extremely nourishing when I apply it to my skin and yet, it absorbs quite quickly. There is no oily residue left so you can put your clothes on straight after. I don’t use this oil often, maybe once a week now that we’re in summer, but come winter time, its my absolute favourite! But I do know that I will be using it a lot more now that the summer holidays are coming and we’ll be swimming a lot!

#Entertainer2018

As I sit at my desk and type this I am still revelling in last nights humour. We attended the launch of the #Entertainer2018 App at Parkers Comedy Club in Monte Casino. It was a night of humour, pizza, wine and learning all about the new exciting things the Entertainer2018 App will bring with it.

the entertainer

What is the entertainer? A lifestyle app with amazing deals on offer. Amazing deals like buy-one-get-one-free and discount offers when it comes to restaurants, bars, spas, attractions, actives, salons and more!

Where can I download it? The app can be downloaded onto your phone off iTunes, Google Play and Samsung Apps.

Can we try it before we buy it? There is an option to have a little taste of the Entertainer at first and try a free sample. Once you have downloaded the free app, you can then take a look at the offers available and unlock a free offer before taking the plunge and buying the full product.

Why the Entertainer? If like me, you love eating out, you love trying new experiences and you love travelling, but your budget won’t allow all of this and more, then the Entertainer app is for you. You will still enjoy a lifestyle of wining and dining, but with great discounts!

How does it work? The app is very easy to use and offers loads of great features. There are five categories: Food & Drink, Beauty & Fitness, Attractions & Leisure, Retail & Services and Hotels Worldwide. Yes, that last one interests me too! It is simple to use and you always have your offers with you. New offers from new merchants are added every month so you’ll never get tired of whats on offer.

Entertainer 2018

The above sounds exciting, doesn’t it? But what I am going to share with you now is whole nother level exciting because “what’s new in the app will seriously blow your mind!”.

First of all, the 2018 app will bring you a better product than before. There will be a total of 2100 offers in all of the different categories. In total, if you use all the offers, you will save yourself a whopping R1.4 million.
The app will still be all about the buy-one-get-one-free specials, but the best part is it will extend to Retail & Fashion as well. I foresee a lot of retail therapy in 2018!
One of the biggest categories in the app is the Beauty & Fitness one, and will now introduce the likes of Life Day Spa and Placecol just to name a few.
The biggest category, without a doubt, is Food & Drink, will still feature all your favourites but going forward there will be a lot more exciting merchants. Such as Haagen-Dazs, Hudsons, Col Cacchios’ and a whole lot more!

Surprise! Surprise!

For a limited time only, there’s an early bird special and you can buy the app for R295 (normally it is R495). You’ll get Johannesburg AND Durban will be included for free. Does that not sound like a cracker of a deal? You’ll be saving 40% on the app and you can look forward to 2018 being a year full of exciting deals, promos and specials … And you’ll be saving!

If you need any more information on downloading the app you can visit the website here.

Its Always Nicer in Beautiful Knysna

Knysna, situated in the heart of the Garden Route, is such a beautiful town with so much charm. Just a quick drive through this little town will capture your heart forever. The beauty, the views and the people all contribute to this.

Ever since I can remember, Knysna has always had a special place in my heart. We spent all our school holidays in Plettenberg Bay which meant that we also spent a lot of time in Knysna.

As you know, Knysna was under fire in June of this year. Knysna is still as beautiful as ever and is definitely recovering from the disaster. I was in Knysna not so long ago and took a million and one photos to show you this. Maybe you will notice how the once green mountain peaks are now charcoal and brown, but there is still absolutely plenty of beauty to marvel at and to put it simply, nothing has changed. There is still so much natural beauty, majestic views and the friendliest people.

So here are some recent photos of beautiful Knysna …

our 3 favourite things to do in Knysna

1. Hire a bicycle and cycle around Thesens Islands,

2. Have brunch at East Head Cafe and watch the boats go by ,

3.  Go on a sunset cruise on the lagoon.

where to stay in Knysna?

The Turbine Hotel and Spa. I will keep this short and simple because you can read a full blog post HERE.

Five Favourite Things: The Beauty Edition

It has been a minute since I did a five favourite things post. These are a series of posts where I chat about everything I have been loving lately. From something I have eaten, to a new tea I am drinking, but todays post is a bit different. In this post I will be chatting about five of my favourite beauty things at the moment. From a hand cream my skin is absolutely loving, to a new matte lip colour I am in love with, a new beauty spa that has opened up, and more.

So grab a cup of tea and lets get to it …

1. RIMMEL STAY MATTE LIQUID LIP COLOUR

A few weeks ago a parcel arrived at the door and it was like Christmas came early. The team at Rubybox sent me the new Stay Matte Liquid Lip Colour range by Rimmel to put to the test. There is a total of 15 shades in the range but I received 12 shades. This range is all about the nudes, pinks and plums. There is definitely a shade for every season. What I found is they’re easy to apply, the shades are nicely pigmented and the best part, they dry super matte. I have been trial and error’ing them since I received them, so stay tuned to a full review with swatches next week on the blog.

2. VASELINE PETROLEUM JELLY

Petroleum jelly, AKA Vaseline, has been in my life since forever but recently I have discovered how much more I love it. I keep a small tub on my desk to use on my dry lips, when my cuticles look terrible and when my patches of dry skin start flaring up. Vaseline is one of those products that are so affordable and useful, that if you don’t have one on your desk, in your handbag and next to your bed, then what are you actually using?

3. MOROCCANOIL LIGHT

This is that one hair product my hair absolutely loves and soaks up, and so will yours. The difference between the normal Moroccanoil and this one, is that this one is for blonde hair. It works just as amazing as the normal one but it doesn’t leave your hair looking darker. This is the only hair oil I can use. It is light but ultra-nourishing and your hair is left feeling silky, smooth and healthy looking. It also doesn’t weigh your hair down, like other argan oils.

I buy Moroccanoil over and over again but this time when I bought it it came with a free hand cream. One of the reasons I love Moroccanoil is the scent, I am obsessed with it. So if I tell you how deliciously amazing the hand cream smells, I promise I am not lying.

Price: R540 from all major hair retailers.

4. EUCERIN 5% UREA HAND CREAM

When you wash your hands a million times a day you need to make sure you’re using the best hand cream. I hate that feeling of dirty hands – I am what you call a germophobe (google it!). So because I wash my hands very often throughout the day, my skin obviously tends to get very dry. Hence, I need a cream with urea which repairs dry skin, provides moisture and strengthens the skin barrier. The Eucerin 5% urea hand cream is amazing and comes highly recommended! It does not irritate my skin, the application is easy and my hands are left feeling silky smooth and moisturised.

5. TRIBE AND YOU

Just imagine this: you’re being treated to a sensational pedicure while your little toddler is being looked after in the playroom next-door. Well a new salon has just opened up in Parkmore, Sandton with this exact concept, called Tribe and You. Now I don’t have a little toddler of my own, but I did have a sensational pedicure at this very salon.

Martynne, the owner of Tribe and You, who is a mom herself understands how difficult it can be to earn yourself a bit of me time when you have a little mini-me with you. So this salon was created as a place of relaxation for all the moms and a place of fun for all the kiddies. With an indoor and an outdoor play area offering activities, arts and crafts and jungle gyms, and trained child minders, you can be sure your kiddies are in good hands.

I was recently invited to Tribe and You, as a non parent. Let me tell you, I had one of the most amazing pedicures of my life. I know for sure I will definitely return for another one (maybe in the future with a little toddler in tow 😉 )

Book Club: My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella

0

This is the ultimate chic-lit you have to read this summer!

I have just finished reading My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella and while it is still fresh (and funny) in my mind I thought I have to share it with you …

So what is it about?

Katie Brenner has the perfect life: a flat in London, a glamorous job, and a super-cool Instagram feed. Ok, so the real truth is that she rents a tiny room with no space for a wardrobe, has a hideous commute to a lowly admin job, and the life she shares on Instagram isn’t really hers.

But one day her dreams are bound to come true, aren’t they?

Until her not-so perfect life comes crashing down when her mega-successful boss Demeter gives her the sack. All Katie’s hopes are shattered. She has to move home to Somerset, where she helps her dad with his new glamping business.

Then Demeter and her family book in for a holiday, and Katie sees her chance. But should she get revenge on the woman who ruined her dreams? Or try to get her job back? Does Demeter – the woman with everything – have such an idyllic life herself? Maybe they have more in common than it seems.

And what’s wrong with not-so-perfect, anyway?

Why I loved it?

I absolutely thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. I don’t know if it is because this is the first chic lit I have read in ages (this year I was into more thrillers!) or because it was just SO good. When I say SO good, I mean all I wanted to do was just finish it.

Sophie Kinsella is hands-down the funniest author. It is rare to find yourself LOL’ing (Laugh Out Loud’ing) when reading, but her stories and characters are real LOL moments.

One of the reasons I loved this book is how relatable the story line is. We all strive for that perfect life and, now with social media playing a huge role, a perfect Instagram feed. Behind the scenes though it isn’t all perfect.

I also once had a boss similar to Demeter – all the characteristics were the exact same, and, my boss also didn’t know my name! One of the funniest parts in this book is when Kate masterminds the ultimate revenge against Demeter. I also loved the sweet love interest, there’s nothing like a little bit of romance to get the heart swooning.

So if you’re looking for the ultimate beach read this summer, My Not So Perfect Life is the one. It is lighthearted, an easy read and it will have you LOL’ing through summer!

We had Sunday lunch at Moyo in Melrose Arch

Melrose Arch, in Johannesburg, has turned into a proper foodie hot spot. With trendy restaurants all serving up some delicious food, its hard to decide which restaurant to wine and dine at. Not so new to the Melrose Arch foodie scene though is Moyo, one of my ultimate favourite restaurants for a unique African dining experience.

Moyo is definitely something special. Not only is the decor, music and live entertainment reflective of Africa, but the menu definitely showcases some of the very best dishes Africa has to offer. The focus of the varied menu is pan-African, with influences from northern Africa, Cape Malay, Morocco as well as some authentic South African dishes. Think tandoori chicken, lentil bobotie, tagines, ostrich burgers and even oxtail. If you’re more on the daring side, you will also find dishes like fried mopane worms and crocodile tail pies.

Moyo has always been our go-to spot for a dinner with a difference or even a celebration. From a birthday to an anniversary, we have always loved wining and dining here. The food is superb, the live music is entertaining and the ambiance is something different. I personally love the truly African feel to this restaurant!

A few Sundays ago we were treated to a delicious lunch here which was definitely a first for us as we’ve always only ever had dinner at Moyo. It was a cold rainy Sunday and all we wanted was a little bit of comfort food and the dishes we ordered definitely hit the right spots.

What made our Sunday lunch truly remarkable, in addition to the delicious African cuisine, the live African music and decor, was the hospitable service. As we arrived, smiling staff welcomed us to our table. A few moments later we were having our faces painted following a Masaai Mara tradition, with small flowers and dots using a white and black soluble paint.

OUR DISHES

The Moyo Flamed Fillet.

This is the aged fillet with mushroom, spinach and mozzarella, on a herb potato gallet with creamy Madagascan green peppercorn and peppadew sauce. Words won’t do this dish justice, but just know that the meat was cooked to absolute perfection, it was tender and tasty, and it was so flavourful. My first bite (and all the bites after) was definitely a melt-in-your-mouth moment.

Oxtail Amos.

This is Moyo’s famous oxtail braised with butter beans and carrots in a red wine beef jus. It is no wonder why it is famous, it was absolute perfection. The meat fell off the bone, it was succulent and tender. It definitely reminded me of my Granny’s famous oxtail.

When it finally came round to dessert we just couldn’t decide. The options included Cape malva pudding, rooibos tea crème brûlée, amarula ice cream or peppermint crisp cheesecake. We knew we had to share a dessert (we were so full) but we just didn’t know which one. So when we asked our friendly waitress which one she recommends, without any hesitation she said the crème brûlée. She definitely knows her stuff because it was a real treat.

Rooibos Tea Crème Brûlée

Thank you Moyo Melrose Arch for a very memorable Sunday lunch. We have already made a reservation for our next visit!

48 Hours in Cape Town – What Must You Do?

Don’t panic, 48 hours is more than enough time!

Cape Town, the most scenic city in South Africa, attracts tourists and locals alike. The city has so much natural beauty, cultural attractions and famous landmarks, you’d think it is impossible to fit everything into 48 hours, but it really isn’t. How do I know this? Because often we fly up to Cape Town just for the weekend to do all the things we love before our flight home and return to Jozi (slightly) exhausted.

SO IF YOU ONLY HAVE 48 HOURS IN CAPE TOWN THIS IS WHAT YOU MUST DO:

EXPLORE THE V&A WATERFRONT

The V&A Waterfront has so much to offer from world class restaurants and shops, to the Watershed market selling beautiful local designer produce. A visit to the waterfront is an absolute must. And while you here, hop onto the Cape Wheel and enjoy spectacular 360° views of Cape Town. This is definitely one of my absolute favourite things to do in Cape Town. I have done this countless times, but every time, the views are as amazing!

www.waterfront.co.za

INDULGE IN SOME OYSTERS AT THE V&A FOOD MARKET

While you’re exploring the Waterfront, you have to pop into the V&A Market on the Wharf. You will find some interesting and delicious goodies to snack on. Like ice-cream from The Creamery, Bubble Tea but an absolute must is to have some oysters from the fresh Knysna Oysters stall. You’re not in the Cape until you’ve had some oysters! And while you’re at it, grab yourself a glass of bubbly!

www.marketonthewharf.co.za

HOP ON HOP OFF BUS

The best way to see Cape Town is on the City Sightseeing open-top bus. It is really such a fun, safe and informative way to explore the very best Cape Town has to offer. The bus stops at different points along the way and you’re encouraged to hop off the bus, explore, then hop onto the next bus in the same route. The last time we were in Cape Town (for the weekend!) we did the Constantia Wine Bus tour and it was the MOST fun! We stopped at all the famous wine farms in Constantia, and cut a long story short, we drank a lot of wine!

www.citysightseeing.co.za

GO WINE TASTING

About an hour’s drive (even less) from Cape Town, you can visit some of the most beautiful wine regions famous for their world class wine. Whether you choose to explore Franschhoek or Stellenbosch, both little towns have wine farms offering not just wine tasting but also some of the best food in the Cape. Some of the more known ones worth visiting are Haute Cabriere, La Petite Ferme and Tokara.

HAVE FISH AND CHIPS IN KALK BAY

An absolute MUST when you’re in Cape Town is to have fish and chips. If you don’t, then sorry, but why are you in Cape Town? The best place, in my opinion, is Kalkies in Kalk Bay. You know a place is good when all the locals eat there. I recommend the fresh fish and chips and also the calamari is superb!

TAKE A STROLL AROUND HOUT BAY

Hout Bay is also worth visiting for the restaurants and the scenery. If you want delicious sea food pay Mariners Wharf a visit. It is also just nice to walk around the harbour and watch the fishing boats coming in and going out. It has that real seaside village feel!

GO UP TABLE MOUNTAIN

You can never get tired of the panoramic views from up here no matter how many times you go up. The cable car going up can be quite scary (if you scared of heights, like me) but the moment you reach the top, it all becomes so worth it! There’s just something about being at the top that makes me so free!

www.tablemountain.net

HAVE A SWIM IN THE SEA AT MUIZENBERG

One of the most beautiful beaches in Cape Town is definitely Muizenberg Beach. It has such atmosphere with the coloured huts (change rooms), the water is nice and warm and it is surrounded by breathtaking views. So a must, definitely, is to have a swim here. Or maybe take it further and even learn to surf here!

TAKE A STROLL ON THE PROMENADE IN SEA POINT

Grab a coffee and take a stroll along the Sea Point promenade. It is so soul soothing to walk alongside the shore and watch the waves breaking and listen to the seagulls. The best time to do this is just before the sun sets, as you’ll witness the most magical sunset, ever!

GRAB AN ICE-CREAM FROM THE CREAMERY

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice-cream from The Creamery. It is not often you find ice-cream made from natural ingredients sourced from local farms, but from The Creamery, you do. Not only this, but the flavours are the most appealing. Think popcorn, malted milk and jam and scones, to name a few. Whenever I visit Cape Town I make sure I have my The Creamery fix as often as I can.

Our Favourite Restaurants in Johannesburg

Hi Loren, where can we go for our 3 year wedding anniversary?”
“Hi there, where do you recommend for a girls night out dinner?”
“Ola Minky, we need a recommendation for somewhere different but delicious!”

You know you’re a foodie, when these are the
types of messages that pop up in your inbox.

It is for this very reason I have put a post together on all our favourite places to eat in Johannesburg.

1. The Fat Zebra -> breakfast

At least once a week I make my way to The Fat Zebra in Linden for breakfast. It is a small little restaurant with fantastic food and exceptional service. The bonus is they serve one of the best breakfasts Jozi has to offer. From french toast to crumpets, but my all time favourite is a simple macon and poached eggs. The macon is extra crispy (even better than bacon) and the poached eggs are always perfect.

Location: Linden.

2. The Big Mouth -> sushi

The sushi scene in Johannesburg is rather lacking compared to Cape Town. In Cape Town, every area has its own sushi place offering the utmost delicious sushi. But in Johannesburg there is only one place: The Big Mouth in Nelson Mandela Square. I did a blog post on my three favourite sushi dishes from The Big Mouth (you can read that here) not so long ago so that just shows you how much I love the sushi here. I also love that they add specials to the menu every so often. Like now, one of the specials is a cucumber boat – it is a must try!

Location: Nelson Mandela Square.

3. The Grind -> coffee and GF treats

This little coffee shop in the heart of Melrose Arch not only serves up my favourite cuppa in Johannesburg, but they also have the most delicious gluten free banana bread. The Grind uses a three-bean Arabica mix (from South America and North Africa) which is roasted gently to extract the floral notes. The end result is a creamy, nutty flavour coffee. The gluten free banana bread is served with macadamia nut butter and honey. It is really melt-in-your-mouth good, so much so, that I crave it nearly every day. Now that I am strictly gluten free, treats like these make being gluten free SO easy.

Location: Melrose Arch.

4. Gemelli Cuccina Bar -> Sunday lunch

Sunday is family day. We either go out or now that it is summer we’ll braai at home. When we do go out though we love a place that serves great food and has a great atmosphere. Gemelli Cuccina Bar is the place! The food is outstanding, especially this salad below, and the desserts are phenomenal. Also, if you’re one for out-of-this-world-cocktails, you’ve found the right place.

Location: Bryanston.

5. Glenda’s -> a fabulous meal

Glenda’s is my go-to restaurant for a meal with the girls. Be it breakfast, lunch, a simple cup of tea or even dinner. The food is fabulous, the decor is fabulous and the vibe is fabulous. So if you were wondering which is the restaurant I always suggest for a girls night out dinner, it is always Glenda’s. I have done two blog posts on Glenda’s – one all about Lunching at Glenda’s and another all about Dinner at Glenda’s – both are a must read if you need some convincing.

Location: Hyde Park.

6. PRONTO -> pizza and pasta

You know how much we love our pizza and pasta. I even did a blog post on my favourite pasta dishes in and around Jozi where I rounded up all my favourites. But when people ask me where to go for the best of the best, I always without a doubt suggest PRONTO. The pizza’s are top notch and the pasta’s are divine. AND if you’re gluten free like me, they make the BEST gluten free pizza and pasta. My favourite is a gluten free pizza base with mushrooms, olives and a little bit of chilli.

Location: Craighall Park.

7. Espresso -> prego rolls

Hands down, the best prego rolls in the world are from Espresso in Parkhurst. The roll are the real Portuguese rolls, the meat is tender and tasty and the prego sauce is too delicious for words! And as for the chips. Unbelievable!

Location: 4th Avenue, Parkhurst.

8. Yamato -> Japanese

One of our favourite cuisines is Japanese. But I’m not talking about sushi, I’m referring to the proper stuff like chicken yakitori, udon noodle soup, or kaki soba. The best restaurant in Johannesburg for food like this is Yamato. The food is authentic and flavourful. We have been going to Yamato for years (even before they moved) and with each meal, we always leave truly satisfied.

Location: Illovo Muse, 198 Oxford Rd, Illovo.

9. Date night -> Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff

When people ask me where do I recommend to celebrate a special occasion or just for a romantic date night, I always without a doubt recommend Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff. This hotel has a special place in my heart. I celebrated my graduation, my admission as an Attorney and my boyfriends 30th here. We also love to have Sunday afternoon sundowners on the terrace. From the most spectacular view of Johannesburg, to the most delicious food, and impeccable service, I always feel like royalty when I walk into Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff.

Location: Westcliff

10. Paul’s Homemade Ice-cream -> ice-cream

I am going to keep this description short and sweet. PHIC is the BEST ice-cream you will ever in your life. The flavours are amazing and the ice-creams are flavourful. That’s all I’m saying!

A Guide to Skincare Come Summertime

0

Summertime and the livin’ is easy!

We not even halfway through Spring and it already feels like Summer with scorching temperatures close to 30 degrees. If this is only October, I would hate to know what December and January is going to be like. Having said that, we need to take extra care of our skin come summer time. I have put together a list of do’s, don’ts and a guide to summertime skin care that we should all obey.

Before we get started …

♥ What is UVA? 95% of the ultra violet radiation to hit the earth is UVA due to absorption in the atmosphere’s ozone layer. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin. They do not cause sunburn BUT are responsible for the ageing of skin, DNA damage and potentially skin cancer. UVA rays are present year round, throughout daylight hours and can penetrate through clouds and glass.

♥ What is UVB? – Strongest in summer, UVB rays are responsible for sunburn, tanning and skin aging. UVB rays are also linked to skin cancers. The intensity of UVB rays is dependent on time of day, season and location. They cannot penetrate through glass. These rays are also responsible for the formation of Vitamin D.

SUMMERTIME SKINCARE

♥ Always put sunscreen on whenever you are heading out the house even if you’re not planning on being in the sun.

♥ Your face is the most important, so always apply sunscreen to your face before you apply your makeup.

♥ Or better yet, invest in a BB cream that contains SPF.

♥ After you’ve had a swim, reapply your sunscreen, even if it is waterproof.

♥ Keep a hydrating face mist in your handbag. They’re great for cooling and refreshing your skin throughout the day.

♥ Drink a lot of water to keep your skin and body hydrated.

♥ Avoid the sun between the hours of 10am and 3pm because during these hours the UVB rays are the strongest.

♥ Don’t be stingy with the SPF – you need about two palm size portions to protect your whole body.

♥ Wear a hat and sunglasses for extra protection.

♥ Make sure you have a great after sun lotion on the ready – you never know how mean the sun can be.

♥ Don’t forget to exfoliate and moisturise your skin to keep it soft, glowy and healthy looking.

♥ For that beautiful summer glow, self tan is your best friend when you find a brand that does the job.

♥ Make sure your lip balm also has SPF inside it. Crucial!

♥ Use an SPF that protects your skin and your clothes at the same time …

Don’t you hate when you apply sunscreen under your favourite t-shirt and when you get home after a day out and about your favourite top has nasty yellow stains from the sunscreen? I know for sure that this is my worst thing about using sunscreen.

It is because of this, we all get put off from wearing sunscreen and your favourite white top to the beach, isn’t it?

NIVEA Sun have just introduced the very first sunscreen that protects clothing from this very stain. This means that the new formula includes a clothing protection complex which prevents those annoying nasty sunscreen stains on clothing. The reason sunscreen causes these nasty stains is because sunscreen contains specific UV filters which have a yellow colour due to their spectral absorption. This then leads to yellow stains on clothes.

The new formula of NIVEA Sun Protect & Moisture also provides highly effective UVA and UVB filters for immediate protection and supports the skin’s protective barrier with 24 hours of skin moisturisation, just like a body lotion.

New NIVEA Sun Protect & Moisture is available from Dischem, Clicks or any major retailers.
