My Favourite Flavoured Green Teas

because I dislike the taste of plain green tea.

Green tea is so healthy for us but I just cannot get used to the taste. I know it is an acquired taste that takes a bit of getting used to, but each time I try a cup, it tastes like (dirty) water from a fish tank. So this is the reason why I love flavoured green teas. The particular flavour of the green tea overpowers the taste of green tea yet you still reaping the health benefits.

I like to sip on my flavoured green teas throughout the day, because like I said, green tea is SO healthy and beneficial to our bodies (you can read the benefits here). After breakfast and then again in the afternoon. I have a shelf in my pantry just with different flavoured green teas. When I see a new one at the shops I have to buy it, taste it and add it to the shelf.

So because I love my flavoured green teas, I thought I would share with you my favourites.

lychee

This Lychee Green Tea is by the famous green tea brand Eve. It is truly delicious as it has a tropical lychee flavour to it. It’s not often you find lychee flavoured anything, and lychee is one of my favourite fruit juice flavours, so this flavoured green tea definitely goes down well. It is also delicious served chilled with ice. In summer, it is superb!

Available from: Dischem.

peach

Growing up, wasn’t peach iced tea your favourite drink? I know mine was. So just imagine now, as a grown up, peach iced green tea. Yip, it is a thing. Especially in summer. This flavoured green tea is a little on the sweet side, so I like to drink it when I have a craving for something sweet. It’s not one you can sip on throughout the day because it really is quite sweet in flavour, but it is totally delicious and really satisfying.

Available from: Tea and Coffee Emporium

apple and pear

This is the green tea I reach for most of the time. It is truly delicious and the flavour is just perfect. The apple flavour definitely outshines the pear and that is why I love it. I also like that it isn’t expensive – if I am not mistaken it is R22 for 20 teabags. If you’re looking to try a flavoured green tea, this is a must. I promise you, you will love this one!

Available from: your supermarket.

coconut

I searched high and low at every Woolworths for this tea and only recently did I find it. So like a normal person, I took five boxes just incase they disappear again. This tea apparently sells out very fast so you have to be quick and grab! Now I know why, it is absolutely delicious. The very first sip takes you to a tropical island destination and the aromas keep you there. It is divine!

Available from: Woolworths

tropical

The first time I had this green tea was a long time ago when I was in Hong Kong. It was so good that I promised myself I will find it again at a supermarket in Hong Kong the next time I visit. And so I did. I won’t say too much about this one though because unfortunately you don’t get this green tea in South Africa … But it is all the flavours of a tropical island.

De Hoek Country Hotel

When I feel like running away from reality, I always want to go on a road trip. There is honestly nothing better than driving out of the city and into the countryside. Your mind stops working overtime and you instantly start relaxing. This past weekend we did just this. We hopped into the car and drove out of Johannesburg to the beautiful De Hoek Country Hotel in Magaliesburg.

We arrived at De Hoek and the first thing that grabbed our attention was the size of the estate. As vast as it is though, it still feels intimate and cosy. The very regal country houses are clustered together and are surrounded by beautiful lush gardens. Our room was in the New Quarter and all the finer details speak for themselves. A cute little teddy bear on the bed, a Nespresso machine, jars of marshmallows, rusks and biscuits, and the most beautiful bathroom.

De Hoek is the ultimate weekend getaway and I can definitely vouch for this.

With not much to do, entertainment wise, we were basically forced to enter a state of total relaxation. If we weren’t sipping on a cup of tea and reading a book in our room, then we were lying by the pool. When the sun went down, we made our way to the very cosy bar for some snacks and sundowners. And when dinner time came round we indulged in a delicious three course dinner.

De Hoek is a quick one hour drive out of Johannesburg. The setting is breathtaking as it is situated in the crook of the Magalies River and in the valley of the Magaliesburg Mountains. So if you’re looking for a luxurious retreat that is romantic and relaxing coupled with absolutely delicious and sublime food, you’ll find this whole package at De Hoek.

Where to satisfy your sweet tooth in Johannesburg

There are two types of people in this world. Those who have a sweet tooth and those who don’t. Luckily, for purposes of this blog post, I am the former. Book Club: What I’ve Been Reading

2

It has been a minute since I did a book club post. It is not because I haven’t been reading, it’s because I wanted to feature only the very good ones I have read lately. So here they are …

The Girl Before by JP Delaney

Please make a list of every possession you consider essential to your life.

The request seems odd, even intrusive—and for the two women who answer, the consequences are devastating.

EMMA

Reeling from a traumatic break-in, Emma wants a new place to live. But none of the apartments she sees are affordable or feel safe. Until One Folgate Street. The house is an architectural masterpiece: a minimalist design of pale stone, plate glass, and soaring ceilings. But there are rules. The enigmatic architect who designed the house retains full control: no books, no throw pillows, no photos or clutter or personal effects of any kind. The space is intended to transform its occupant—and it does.

JANE

After a personal tragedy, Jane needs a fresh start. When she finds One Folgate Street she is instantly drawn to the space—and to its aloof but seductive creator. Moving in, Jane soon learns about the untimely death of the home’s previous tenant, a woman similar to Jane in age and appearance. As Jane tries to untangle truth from lies, she unwittingly follows the same patterns, makes the same choices, crosses paths with the same people, and experiences the same terror, as the girl before.

♥ This is one of those books that you will either love or hate. There are so many mixed reviews on it, and I must say I really enjoyed it. It was different to what I expected, but in a good way. I love that it was written back and forth between Jane and Emma. My favourite is all the twists and turns and the slowly unfolding clues to help the reader figure out everything. At the end when you find out who the killer is, it is revealed in a way that is a genuine surprise to the reader. This book is a real page turner. Make you when you start reading it, you have a lot of free time ahead of you.

First Comes Love by Emily Giffin

Growing up, Josie and Meredith Garland shared a loving, if sometimes contentious relationship. Josie was impulsive, spirited, and outgoing; Meredith hardworking, thoughtful, and reserved. When tragedy strikes their family, their different responses to the event splinter their delicate bond.

Fifteen years later, Josie and Meredith are in their late thirties, following very different paths. Josie, a first grade teacher, is single—and this close to swearing off dating for good. What she wants more than the right guy, however, is to become a mother—a feeling that is heightened when her ex-boyfriend’s daughter ends up in her class. Determined to have the future she’s always wanted, Josie decides to take matters into her own hands.

On the outside, Meredith is the model daughter with the perfect life. A successful attorney, she’s married to a wonderful man, and together they’re raising a beautiful four-year-old daughter. Yet lately, Meredith feels dissatisfied and restless, secretly wondering if she chose the life that was expected of her rather than the one she truly desired.

As the anniversary of their tragedy looms and painful secrets from the past begin to surface, Josie and Meredith must not only confront the issues that divide them, but also come to terms with their own choices. In their journey toward understanding and forgiveness, both sisters discover they need each other more than they knew . . . and that in the recipe for true happiness, love always comes first.

Emotionally honest and utterly enthralling, First Comes Love is a story about family, friendship, and the courage to follow your own heart—wherever that may lead.

♥ I have been reading one thriller after another so I thought it was time to read a different genre. This is the first book I have read by Emily Giffin. I know I will definitely be reading more by her because I fell in love with her style of writing. This book is about family dynamics, sibling conflicts, who we love and why we love. It is basically close to real life, which is why I enjoyed it. There is a bit of romance in the novel but it isn’t the main focus. There are a few unexpected (but realistic) twists, so I don’t want to give away any spoilers.

The Drowning Girls by Paula Treick DeBoard

Liz McGinnis never imagined herself living in a luxurious gated community like The Palms. Ever since she and her family moved in, she’s felt like an outsider amongst the Stepford-like wives and their obnoxiously spoiled children. Still, she’s determined to make it work—if not for herself, then for her husband, Phil, who landed them this lavish home in the first place, and for her daughter, Danielle, who’s about to enter high school.

Yet underneath the glossy veneer of The Palms, life is far from idyllic. In a place where reputation is everything, Liz soon discovers that even the friendliest residents can’t be trusted—and almost everyone has secrets they’d do anything to protect. So when the gorgeous girl next door befriends Danielle, Liz can’t help but find sophisticated Kelsey’s interest in her shy and slightly nerdy daughter a bit suspicious.

But while Kelsey quickly becomes a fixture in the McGinnis home, Liz’s relationships with both Danielle and Phil grow strained. Now even her own family seems to be hiding things, and it’s not long before their dream of living the high life quickly spirals out of control…

♥ This book had me at “luxurious gated community”. I loved, loved, loved this book. From the very start, it captivated my attention and sucked me right in. So much so, that I couldn’t put it down. The story is one that makes you really wonder how far you will go for your own family. I loved all the characters, except one, but I won’t say which. If you’re looking to read the best book of 2017, pick up a copy of The Drowning Girls. I can promise you, you will love.

What have you been reading lately?

A weekend well spent at Jock Safari Lodge

Deep in the thick bushveld of the Kruger National Park lies a luxurious private lodge. This private lodge offers guests a 5 star safari experience and some of the best Big 5 game viewing in South Africa. For me, it is a private lodge like no other.

It is the ultimate bush retreat.

Jock Safari Lodge is one of a kind. It is absolutely magical, totally romantic and extremely luxurious.

The attention to detail remarkable.

We got to experience this first hand as we spent a weekend at the lodge. Two magical nights in this luxurious bush oasis created wonderful memories, beautiful photos and exciting stories which will last a lifetime.

We entered into the Kruger National Park through Malelane Gate (about 4 hours from Johannesburg) and arrived at Jock Safari Lodge just before lunch on a Friday afternoon. During this hour drive between the gate and the lodge we spotted giraffes, elephants and a hyena den with the cutest cub. The excitement levels were now peaked.

accommodation

Jock Safari Lodge has two unique accommodation options. The Main Jock Lodge or Fitzpatrick’s at Jock. The Main Jock Lodge has 12 individually thatched rooms whereas Fitzpatrick is an intimate lodge with three rooms perfect for a family.

We had the privilege of staying at the main lodge. Straight after check in we were taken to our room. We instantly fell in love with the setting, the luxuriousness and all the finer details. Our room was like a tree house as it was surrounded by lush trees and reed walls. We had our own private deck with clear views of the riverbed, a plunge pool, an outdoor shower and a sala with an outdoor day bed.

I spent many hours on the day bed with my book and a cup of coffee hoping the elephants will come join me. Unfortunately they didn’t but the monkeys did.

meals

At Jock Safari Lodge breakfast, lunch, dinner and tea time is included every day. Each meal is a royal affair and an experience each in itself. The food is exceptional. Lunch is served on the deck overlooking the dry river bank. Dinner is just as exciting. One night you’ll have a braai/barbecue around the fire with all the other guests. And the next night you’ll be treated to a fine dining dinner under the stars. You can either request to have this dinner in your room or in the dining room with everyone else. I must mention one more time, for emphasis, that the food is absolutely incredible at every meal time. It is difficult to describe how magical it is to enjoy this standard of food in such a setting.

On our last night, we opted to have dinner in our room. We returned to our room after our afternoon game drive to the most beautifully set dinner table. Not to mention the drawn bubble bath, lit candles and sprinkled rose petals all over. I honestly thought le bf organised this but he admitted Jock must take all the credit.

game drives

Every morning and afternoon your ranger takes you out on a three hour long game drive. Some game drives were a little longer, but the safari addict that I am, this is something that I would never complain about. I would stay out in the bush all day if I could.

Now here comes the most exciting part: because Jock is located in a private concession, driving off the beaten track and through a dry river bed to spot the animals is not frowned upon. Instead, it is what makes the whole experience absolutely legendary.

The game drives were just the best. We had the best ranger, Sue, who shared her wealth of knowledge with us and made each drive better than the previous. Halfway through the game drive, we would stop and alight the vehicle, and either have tea or coffee in the morning or wine or a G & T if it is in the afternoon. We saw a diverse range of game, including lion eating a buffalo, cheetah and at least 2 sightings of rhino per game drive.

wilderness walks

Have you ever taken a stroll through the dense African bush? Nope, neither have I. But this all changed at Jock, because at Jock walking safaris are encouraged. So on Saturday morning, after a hearty delicious breakfast, we changed into our khaki walking gear, and headed out for an hours walk with two guides. It was such an exhilarating feeling to walk and spot animals. But don’t get me wrong, there are some rules that you have to obey. Firstly, you walk in a straight line. Secondly, no talking, no whispering and only the clicking of your finger. And thirdly, the second you spot something you have to immediately stop.

The safari walk was definitely one of the highlights of the weekend. We saw a giraffe, two buffalo and a beautiful bird or two.

When Sunday morning came round we were so sad to leave. Jock Safari Lodge became our home away from home. Our room was our haven, the concession was our sanctuary and everyone became our friends.

Dinner at Glenda’s

the ultimate date night spot!

Ever since Glenda’s opened up, this charming restaurant has been generating a lot of buzz. It is a haven for foodies who love seasonal flavours and a menu that never ceases to amaze. This is me in a nutshell and that is why Glenda’s is definitely one of my favourite restaurants in Jozi.

As you walk in you are greeted by a display of freshly baked pastries and cakes. The décor is clean and the atmosphere is buzzing. The first thing that catches your eye is the colourful tapestries, mirrored walls, marble top counters and gorgeous hot pink chairs.

Everything about this restaurant oozes chic sophistication. What I love most, is it feels like your sitting at a restaurant in New York.

Despite the decor, the food is what I’m all about. Glenda’s focus is on seasonal flavours with a constantly changing menu.

I have only ever been to Glenda’s for breakfast and lunch, but the other night we visited for dinner. The ambience was totally romantic and the food was as sublime.

This is what we ate at Glenda’s …

Starters: smoked salmon with an espresso sauce, mozzarella caprese, salt and pepper calamari

 Mains: lamb chops, fillet steak

Dessert: toffee pudding, berry tart and creme brûlée

So if you’re looking to wow your partner and treat him/her to the ultimate date night dinner, head to Glenda’s. You will both be blown away by the food, ambiance and the romance.

Address: Hyde Square, corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and North Road, Hyde Park.

Five Favourite Things

2

Coffee, a new sushi restaurant and a Sunday sundowner spot are just a few of my favourite things …

hug in a mug cinnamon bun flavour

Imagine two of your favourite things combined into one, coffee and a cinnamon bun. Well we have Hug in a Mug (by House of Coffees) to thank because they have just launched the new Cinnamon Bun Cappuccino flavour and it is just that. It is coffee with a hint of cinnamon flavour. These little sachets of deliciousness are so nifty for when you feel like a little afternoon treat. All you do is mix the sachet of powder into boiling water and it creates a delicious milky, foaming cappuccino. You don’t even need to grab a snack because with the cinnamon bun flavour, all your sweet tooth cravings are satisfied.

These little sachets of goodness are just the best when its cold, rainy and you’re all snuggled up with nowhere to go. I find myself in this position quite often come winter time. I just don’t want to get out of bed. So I make a cinnamon bun cuppa, grab my book and stay put.

sushi burrito & co.

I bet you didn’t except to read the words sushi and burrito in the same sentence. There is a new sushi spot that has opened up in Melrose Arch Johannesburg called Sushi Burrito & Co. and it has me all excited! Why, because I love sushi with a twist. You will find things like sushi burrito’s, boa’s, poke bowls and so much.

The salmon poke bowl is a bowl of absolutely deliciousness (pictured above).

www.thebeautifulstore.com

The other day I asked on Twitter what hand cream I can use because my poor hands take such a beating come winter time. So the very knowledgeable Azraa from Prettiful Blog suggested I try the Human & Kind Family Remedy Cream which you can buy from www.thebeautifulstore.com. This woman knows her stuff! I have been using the hand cream for a few days now and my hands already look and feel so much better. What I love about the cream is that it is all natural ingredients and there are no chemicals at all.

The cream is sold on www.thebeautifulstore.com and I want to share with you the 3 reasons I absolutely loved ordering off this site:
♥ You get R5o off on your very first order. A whopping R50 is a lot, which can go towards another product.

♥ They offer FREE DELIVERY. For me, free delivery is the biggest thing. I hate ordering off a website and the delivery charge is more than the product or goods I am ordering.

♥ I have never received such prompt, efficient and personal service. You receive a Facebook message and email every step of the way. When this happens you know you’re in good hands!

sunday sundowners at four seasons hotel the westcliff

You must never let Monday spoil your Sunday … Especially your Sunday afternoon. So that’s why we like to spend our Sunday afternoons sipping wine with a view of Johannesburg at the beautiful Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff. We also don’t let the cold weather scare us off now that it is winter as the hotel gives you blankets and just as the sun starts going down the fires are all lit. Not only is it our favourite thing to watch the sunset with a glass of wine, but the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff is our absolute favourite sundowner spot in Johannesburg.

sweet potato wannabe fries

I cannot get enough of these things. They are so delicious, so healthy and so satisfying. I love them as a side to my main meal or as an afternoon snack. They are so easy to make and you will love them too. This is all you do:

rinse a sweet potato or two under water,
peel the skin off,
slice into 1cm thick slices,
place slices on an oven tray,
bake in a 180 degree oven,
every so often turn them over until they look crispy on the outside.

The best part is they are super crispy on the outside but deliciously soft in the inside!

The Most Delicious Gluten Free Banana and Choc Chip Muffins

The. Most. Delicious!

I am in no way a health freak … Very far from actually. But I have decided to start somewhere. For specific health reasons (read: psoriasis) I have started to try eat gluten free and I am trying to be very strict about it. You read hundreds of articles about how bad sugar is and how too much salt can cause a stroke, but they don’t tell you how bad gluten is for our bodies. Especially too much of it.

So together with this new health revelation of mine, I have been very busy in the kitchen trying to replicate some of my favourite things. The other day I made the most delicious gluten free banana and choc chip muffins using coconut flour. This recipe is so easy that anyone can make them. Even the least domesticated.

The one thing that I love about them is the coconut flavour. I think from the coconut flour together with the coconut oil, they taste like coconut biscuits/macarons. Those very delicious ones! Add in the banana and choc chips and you have a really delicious but healthy breakfast or tea time treat.

recipe:

3 ripe bananas, mashed up
3 tablespoons honey
4 tablespoons virgin coconut oil
4 eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 cup coconut flour
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 cup choc chips

Preheat oven to 180° and grease/line a standard 6 cup muffin tin.

In a large bowl mix together the eggs, coconut oil, honey, vanilla extract and mashed up bananas using an electric beater. Add the coconut flour, baking soda and kosher salt and mix with a spatula until well combined. Then add the choc chips and mix until they distributed evenly. Leave a few choc chips for decoration. The mixture should be thick and soft, like batter.

Divide the batter evenly amongst the 6 prepared muffin cups. Sprinkle choc chips over for decoration. Place in the oven for about 20 to 30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean. Remove from the oven and allow to cool before placing the muffins on a wire rack.

Make a cup of tea and enjoy!

Another recipe worth trying: the most delicious banana pancakes (using coconut flour!)

We had lunch at the new La Boqueria in Parktown North

There’s a new eatery that has just opened up in Johannesburg that has all foodies (and non-foodies) in a food frenzy.

Say hello to La Boqueria.

La Boqueira has just opened up its doors on 3rd Avenue, Parktown North, and is the brainchild of the same owners as The Foundry. The menu is rather interesting and diverse as it was derived from the owners favourite food markets from around the world. Think ceviche, poke bowls, paella and buddha bowls, to name a few. The food is cooked on live fires and wood ovens with the aim of bringing you a real food experience.

I have been curious to try this all new eatery, so this past Saturday we arrived at La Boqueria at 12pm sharp for what was a never-ending lazy lunch. As we walked in, this buzz just hit us. The restaurant has so much atmosphere. Contributing to this is the beautiful decor. Massive windows with the sun beaming through, hanging plants adding lush greenery, trendy antiques and a bar made entirely from orange post boxes.

On Saturday, we went all out. We shared starters, mains and a dessert. What’s nice about La Boqueria is its all about the sharing, tapas style. So you get to taste a little bit of everything. Tapas is one of my favourites, so this made me even more excited. And a lot more hungry!

STARTERS

We had the Hot Fried Olives (R42) which were extremely delicious. We were tempted to order another portion each but didn’t want to waste unnecessary space in our tummies. With a little squeeze of lemon juice over and dipping them into the caper parsley aioli, they were superb! Next up was a portion of the Baingan Fries (R65). These are crusted zucchini and aubergine fingers drizzled with whipped feta and agave nectar. The flavour combination of whipped feta and the agave nectar together with the crispy zucchini and aubergine fingers is something so different but so good!

We also had a bowl of the 5 Pepper BBQ Squid (R75) done in a chilli, white wine, garlic and lemon salsa. This was a little too spicy for me. I found the chilli overpowering the other flavours. Although it was tasty, it just didn’t do it for me. Sorry, 5 Pepper BBQ Squid, maybe next time. Our last starter was the Oxtail Marmalade Toast (R65). Oxtail is a favourite of ours, especially come winter time, so to have it on toast with a red onion marmalade and horseradish was totally comforting and delicious.

MAINS

For mains we shared two dishes. The Paella Marisco (R220) and the Lomo Saltado (R155). The paella is a seafood paella with prawns, clams, white fish, octopus and crispy squid heads. This dish was huge and it was a serving for one. You could easily share one main dish between two people. We were told the Lomo Saltado is a new dish on the menu which is why we chose it. It is essentially a beef fillet stir fry with peppers, red onion, tomato and chilli soy topped with an egg. We found the meat to be a little bit on the very salty side. Perhaps just a little bit heavy handed in the kitchen but it was still something different that got us excited!

We’ve already made plans with some friends to head back soon to try the other mains. I am dying to try the Poke Bowl!

AND NOW FOR DESSERT

We were so full but we just had to have dessert. The choices were between Churros with a chilli chocolate sauce, a Gintonic Tart or a Whoppie Pie. So guess what we settled on? Yip, the Whoppie Pie (54). White chocolate hazelnut gelato sandwiched between two cookies, nutella, almond flakes and toasted marshmallows. It was A M A Z I N G !

La Boqueria definitely gets my stamp of approval. The menu is exciting, the food is tasty and some dishes quite interesting and the decor is spot on. I will definitely be back for more deep fried olives and to try some other dishes.

The Number One Reason I Love The Plettenberg

Although there are a million, I’m sharing the number one reason!

I like to call Plettenberg Bay my second home because this small little town basically saw me growing up. Since I was a baby, every long weekend and school holiday was spent in Plett. The shop owners knew us by name and even today, so many years later, they can still picture us as kids.

The small town of Plett was a very small town. And by small I mean it had one main road with just a few shops. This main road with so few shops was known as ‘The Village’. The Village had everything you needed and nothing more. A super market, a jewellery shop, a CNA and many surf shops, just to name a few.

Plett has since changed and over the years we’ve watched the village develop. This small town even has a robot now! But the one thing that has never changed is The Plettenberg.

The Plettenberg

My fascination and love for hotels started here, in The Plettenberg. Although we have a holiday home, we’ve spent many hours drinking tea, sipping on cocktails, savouring the setting and lapping up the view.

The Plettenberg is and always has been one of my favourite hotels. It exudes class, sophistication and is a majestic and luxurious hotel.

After having only ever popped into the hotel for a drink or a cup of tea, or to watch the dolphins passing by, I have only ever dreamt of staying here. And last year, I finally did!

It was everything I imagined and more. The ultra luxury room to the food at dinner and the breakfast, it was a childhood dream come true. It was an unbelievable experience staying in a hotel where every little detail has been thought of and the staff go the extra mile with a smile.

Our bedroom suite offered panoramic views of the bay and every window outlooked a breathtaking view. Lying in bed listening to the ocean felt like we were out at sea. And waking up at the early hours of the morning to watch the sunrise up close took my breathe away.

Besides for a beautiful sunrise, if there’s one other thing that gets me up in the morning, it is breakfast. Breakfast at The Plettenberg was exceptional. It was a morning of fresh fruit, orange juice, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and vistas as far as the eye can see. And a buffet with a selection of treats fit for a queen.

So now I can tell you why I love The Plettenberg so much …

… Because I just do.

I have so many memories here and I hope to make more with every trip we make to Plett.

My Winter Survival Must-Haves

2

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO GET YOU THROUGH THIS WINTER

If this past weekend in Johannesburg is a little taster of what winter is going to be like this year, we’re in for an icy one. It is only the start but I already have the heater on next to me. Winter isn’t all that bad though. If you do it the right way, you’ll be sad its over come summer time. What I look forward to most is trial and error’ing different soup recipes, sporting a onesie with my fugly uggs and just getting all round cozy on the couch.

So to make your winter a happy winter and come out of it on the other end unharmed (read: no bouts of flu), here is everything you’ll need.

1. a pair of slippers

What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning? You get up and get out of bed. What is worse than walking barefoot into the cold? So, in order for your feet to survive, you need the cosiest pair of the fluffiest slippers. I bought this pair from Cape Union Mart and my feet haven’t stopped thanking me.

2.  coffee and rusks

As you wake up, you boil the kettle and make a cup of coffee. When that 11am slump comes round, you make more coffee. After lunch, you want to warm up, so you make another cup. Just before 5pm strikes, you crave your last cup at the office. With all these cups of delicious coffee, you need a little snack of some sort and what is better than rusks? Rusks and coffee go together like peanut butter and jelly.

Woolworths have now introduced the waffle rusk. And my oh my, they are delicious.
Just in time for winter – thank you Woolworths.

3. a good book (or five)

With winter, comes a lot of reading. Especially for me! I much prefer reading a book over watching a series, but that’s just me. I was gifted a Kindle Paperwhite for my birthday and I love it. It is the best thing ever! I love it more than I love my cellphone … And that’s a lot! 🙂

If you’re looking for a good book to read, then click here to join my book club and read reviews of all the books I have read.

4. bubble bath

What is a cold winters night if it doesn’t involve a hot bubble bath, a candle and some Cadbury’s Glow? I was sent this oh so glorious wooden bath caddy from the lovely peeps at Cadbury’s and it has most definitely served its purpose. I look so forward to this little bit of ‘me time’.

Similar here but its a silver tray (not wooden) from @home.

5. pyjamas

Hi, my name is Loren and I think you can never have enough pairs of pyjamas.
Even if they make you look like you have just come out of jail.

From onesies, to matching sets, I own every kind and in every colour. Sleep wear is definitely my outfit of choice for days I can’t decide on what to wear. Ha!

Talking about soup (up above), have you seen there is a recipe for delicious homemade chicken soup the Jewish way.

Stay tuned to the blog next week as there will be a recipe for the best Minestrone soup.

‘put on some lipstick and live a little’

We all love a good lipstick, don’t we? We search the beauty counters high and low for that perfect shade. It is either a matt finish or a glossy finish we after. We like to wear that perfect red for that special occasion, or that pretty pink for a girls night out. Oh and don’t forget that gorgeous nude.

In this post I have put together my five favourite lip products for five different occasions. Be it date night, girls night out, dinner and a movie, a casual day out shopping or a night out partying.

Occasion: Date Night

Lip Product: 3INA The Chubby Lipstick in Shade 102

Date nights are for getting all dolled up. So this doesn’t stop you from wearing a bold lip. This shade from 3INA (more in 3INA here) has a smooth matte satin finish that I simply love. It is a stunning dark red with a subtle pink undertone. It is beautifully pigmented and long lasting, perfect for the ultimate date night.

Occasion: Girls Night Out

Lip Product: MAC Saint Germain

AKA: Barbie Pink

Girls night out is all about dressing up with the girls and putting on your most girly face. That means a very bold pink like this Saint Germain from MAC is a must. It is ultra creamy, with a subtle shine but full of colour. I don’t think you get any girly than this shade.

Occasion: Dinner and a Movie

Lip Product: Smith & Cult in The Lovers

The prettiest shade of pink is the order of the day for casual dinner and a movie. This is a recent favourite of mine as I received this at the media launch of Smith & Cult in South Africa. I love a good lip gloss and this definitely ticks all the right boxes. The formula is amazing, the colour is stunning and it is long lasting.

Occasion: Day at the Mall

Lip Product: Essence Sheer & Shine Lipstick in Sparkling Miracle

I love just a subtle shade with a little bit of shimmer for a casual day out. This Sparkling Miracle from Essence is just that.

The colour is a perfect dark pink and theres just a little bit of sparkle.

Occasion: Party Night

Lip Product: MAC Prolong Wear Lipglass in Driven By Love

Now this is when you go all out with a red lip. But not just any red lip. It must be extra bold and extra glossy. And this lip glass by MAC is all that and more! The shade is totally pigmented and the gloss is ultra glossy!
