Book Club: Behind Closed Doors by B A Paris

Have you ever read a book that just infuriates you?

Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace: he has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You’d like to get to know Grace better. But it’s difficult, because you realize Jack and Grace are never apart. Some might call this true love.

Picture this: a dinner party at their perfect home, the conversation and wine flowing. They appear to be in their element while entertaining. And Grace’s friends are eager to reciprocate with lunch the following week. Grace wants to go, but knows she never will. Her friends call—so why doesn’t Grace ever answer the phone? And how can she cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim?

And why are there bars on one of the bedroom windows?

The perfect marriage? Or the perfect lie?

♥ Behind Closed Doors infuriated me. The characters annoyed me and the story line just aggravated me. Maybe I shouldn’t have read it but then again I wouldn’t have known.

The story starts off at a dinner party hosted by Grace and Jack. Everything seems so hunky dory and perfectly normal that you start to admire this couple. But then everything changes and the story progresses from calm to creepy and then to traumatising.

This isn’t the normal thriller we’re used to reading. This one works its way into your mind. So much so, that every couple you see, you start to question their behaviour, mannerisms and even so far as their body language.

This book definitely goes against the famous saying of “it was love at first sight“.

You never know who you’re marrying or what happens Behind Closed Doors.

If you’re up for the challenge, I suggest reading it with caution. If you don’t want your blood to boil or your nerves on their last straw, step away 🙂

The Cosiest Coffee Shops in Cape Town

I’m sure you know by now that I like to make a point of finding ultra cosy coffee spots. Because I love coffee, I love a cosy vibe and I love to try new places, this habit is second nature to me. While I was in Cape Town, this habit proved itself as “research”.

Here are 5 of the cosiest coffee shops in Cape Town …

1. DINKEL GERMAN BAKERY

Dinkel is a traditional German bakery in Kloof Nek, Gardens. They sell traditional 100% rye, poppyseed cake and apple cake, as well as delicious pastries, breakfasts and lunch. Not only is the food absolutely delicious but it very true to German cuisine. If you opt for one of the breakfasts, instead of ordering a slice of toast, you can order a toasted pretzel. Just a smear of butter on the toasted pretzel and its the best think you’ll ever have. The coffee is superb too!

The interior is beautifully decorated and perfectly emulates the kind of coffee shop you will find in Germany. Even the aromas of fresh bread and rich coffee permeates the shop giving off more of a European bakery vibe.

We visited Dinkel often, and each visit the weather played its part. It was raining and cold, and it was just so cosy.

2. DV COTTAGE CAFÉ AT THE SPICE ROUTE

DV Cottage Cafe is the cutest little coffee roastery and homemade ice-cream shop at the Spice Route in Paarl. They have a selection of cakes, serve freshly roasted coffee and authentic delicious homemade ice cream.

The interior has a few pink pieces which definitely had me in love. The views are gorgeous. And the treats are superb!

We stopped here for a quick coffee after having had lunch at La Grapperia, and it was amazing.

3. THE LARDER AT BLOCK & CHISEL

The Larder is situated in Block & Chisel, Diep River. It is an intimate little spot with an open plan kitchen so you can watch the going ons in the kitchen. The menu offers a variety of delicious healthy treats, superb coffee and freshly baked goods. The vibe is relaxed, the food is delicious and the waiters are so friendly and compassionate.

While you wait for your food you can take a stroll through the Block & Chisel and set your heart on a few items for the home.

If this little spot wasn’t such a drive, it would see me every morning for brunch (when I am in Cape Town). I had the Avo Crush, which is avo, a soft poached egg, feta and some chilli on sourdough bread. It was superb. I cannot wait to return when I am back in Cape Town for the Johnny Depp (read here why it is called that).

4. VYGEVELLAI FARM STALL

Vygevellai Farm Stall is on the West Coast Road (the R27) and is about an hours drive from Cape Town. The farm stall is home to the cosiest little coffee shop, a wine house, an area for the kids to play and a little farmyard with some farm animals.

The coffee shop is so cosy, especially in winter because there is a fire place ready to warm you up. They have a big selection on the menu, including slices of fresh baked farm bread with butter and jam. This is exactly what we came for, plus coffee. We got both, and we left wanting more.

If you would like to read more about Vygevellai Farm Stall, read here.

5. GIOVANNI’S

Giovanni’s is a haven for all foodies alike, in Greenpoint. You’ll find a cheese and meat counter, a cooked food deli section, a pantry with only the best selection including imported goodies, and a fridge full of heat and eat meals. It is the best place for anything. For breakfast, for lunch, for a quick bite, to pack a picnic hamper for the beach, for a quick cup of coffee, for a snack, or even for a dinner party.

There is also a coffee counter where you can enjoy your delicious coffee and a croissant while watching the cool peeps sip on their coffee and eat their croissant. Its a great place for people watching, to put it lightly. Ha!

If you must, the bar one cheesecake is absolutely superb. But only if you must 😉

10 THINGS TO DO IN CAPE TOWN

♥

Let’s Talk About Being More Productive

3

lets try be more like Beyonce

There are only so many hours in a day. Those hours seem to be getting shorter and our to-do lists seem to be getting longer. Finding simple ways to help boost productivity throughout the day will make you feel like you’re in control of your to-do list and not the other way round.

Here are My 5 Simple Ways To Be More Productive that help me get through the day:

1. PRIORITISE YOUR TO-DO LIST

We all know to-do lists are the best things ever since sliced bread. The best time to write your to-do list is the evening/afternoon before. When writing your to-do list, try and write the most important things at the top and work your way down to the least important. That means that when you sit at your desk the next day and start tackling your to-do list, you remember whats important, instead of having to waste time sifting through everything deciding what to do first.

I swear by my to-do list, or just list making in general. Our brains can only store so much and the little trivial things of “email so and so” will get shifted to the back of your brain and forgotten about. Thats why it is so important to write all these little things down.

2. KEEP YOUR DESK CLEAN

Try and make sure your desk/office space is totally clutter and mess free. Not only does a messy work space give off negative vibes, but you will have no inspiration to sit at your desk amongst the mess.

On my desk I like to keep my pen holder, laptop and mouse, my 2017 diary, a notepad/notebook for my to-do lists, my hand cream, lip balm and a glass of water. You won’t find anything more or anything less. Oh and a cup of coffee or tea. And maybe a snack or two.

3. TACKLE YOUR EMAILS IN ONE GO

Set an hour or two during the day to tackle all your emails. That means send out what needs to be sent out and reply in bulk to all the emails received. That means you’re not wasting precious time in your mail the whole day.

What I like to do is I make a huge mug of my favourite apple and pear flavoured green tea, I put the radio or some music on, but very soft so I don’t get distracted and end up dancing around the room. Then I do what I need to do for an hour or two or three.

4. HAVE A BREAK

Even if it is just a 5 minute break, a lunch break or a tea and biscuits break, you have to have a break. A 5 minute break to play Candy Crush, is also considered a break! If you sit for a few hours straight working, you’ll burn out quicker. With having a few breaks here and there, you’re refreshing your mind and brain and replenishing your energy levels.

Every so often I like to go outside, get some fresh air, maybe play a bit of Candy Crush or browse Instagram or even read for a bit. This just refreshes the mind and helps re-boost the energy levels.

5. TACKLE THE MOST IMPORTANT BEFORE LUNCH

I don’t know about you but I am at my freshest in the morning up until lunch time. My brain is still functioning, my energy levels are high and my concentration span is still going strong. This is the time when I like to do the most challenging stuff that needs to be done. After lunch, when that slight energy slump happens, is when I do the least mind boggling stuff. Like edit photos for example. While watching Gilmore Girls. Ha!

Bonus: Start your Morning With a Healthy Breakfast/Smoothie

There is something about having a wholesome healthy breakfast that sets the tone for the day. You feel inspired, motivated and encouraged … Well at least I know I do. There is also no better way to feed our mind and our bodies than with a healthy start to the day.

If you’re all out of ideas, then have a look at this post: What’s for Breakfast? Here you’ll find delicious ideas and super easy recipes!

Chocolate Emporium at Four Seasons The Westcliff

Calling all fellow chocoholics, we’re in for a treat.

Four Seasons The Westcliff Johannesburg has opened its very first decadent Chocolate Emporium.

Decadent.
Chocolate.
Emporium.

Yes, you read that correctly.

The Cellar Door, which is Joburg’s most sought after private dining venue, has been fully transformed and decked from one end to another in chocolate. It is a whirlwind of utter indulgence, and as a chocoholic myself, I must say it is amazing.

Just imagine a heavenly all-chocolate dessert buffet, along with plinths stacked high with hand-crafted Belgian pralines, beautiful crafted African Easter egg sculptures and chocolate coated local flowers. And to top it off, delicious chocolately cocktails and hot beverages, like a minty hot chocolate.

This is not a dream.

“This is the ‘Willy Wonka golden ticket’ that chocolate lovers have been waiting for,” says Leon Cronje, Four Seasons Head Pastry Chef.

When? The room is on display from April 13 until May 1. 2017 during lunch, dinner and weekend brunch periods. It is open to all visitors dining at the hotel.

Look out for the Chocolate Emporium competition that will be announced on Four Seasons The Westcliff Facebook and Twitter pages, where one lucky follower will win a private tour of the Chocolate Emporium and complimentary weekend brunch for two as well as a praline making class with a Master Chocolatier.

Five Favourite Things

1

A new series, delicious ice cream and a luxurious hand cream
are just a few of my favourite things.

series

As I type this post I am functioning on a few hours sleep and drinking coffee out my Le Creuset dolphin mug. Why? Because I pulled an all-nighter watching 13 Reasons Why. Well not such an all-nighter as I was asleep by 3. I have never been a series kind of girl (no, Gilmore Girls does not count!) but I was glued to this show. It is totally gripping from the very start and I think it is an absolute must watch for everyone. Without giving away too much, it is about Hannah Baker, a high school student’s, suicide. All the secrets that killed her come out in a dark, harrowing and shocking way. It is honestly a must watch.

beauty stuff

I have only ever heard and read amazing things about Luca’s Papaw Ointment. It can be used for boils, burns, cuts, cracked skin, insect bites, nappy rash and just about everything. When I was overseas last year I bought back quite a few tubes of this stuff and I solemnly swear by it. It is something that everyone should carry in their handbag for just incase. I use it for my lips, itchy bites, burns, to keep my eyebrows in place and for my cuticles.
Apparently you can find a similar product at Dischem (called Dr Paw Paw) which I am yet to see on the shelves. But if you want the Luca’s Papaw Ointment that I swear by you can find it on takealot for R139 a tube.

ice cream

I want to share a funny little story with you about Pauls Homemade Ice Cream. About 6 or 7 years ago, before Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream came about, Paul used to have ice cream tasting days out his garage. He would make an event on Facebook, invite some people, and everyone would pitch up at his house on a Sunday afternoon. Some were his friends, but some were total strangers, like myself, wanting to enjoy some ice cream on a glorious Sunday. Ever since these ice cream tasting days, so many years ago, I knew Paul’s ice cream would become the best in South Africa. There was just something so delicious, so flavourful, yet so natural about this ice cream that hit all the right spots and made everyone want more and more.

Today, PHIC is sold all over and there are 5 stores in Johannesburg. From banting and vegan options to ice cream cakes and absolutely delicious flavours, everyone will be happy. What I love most about PHIC though is the absolutely delicious flavour combinations that just compliment each other so well. Think white chocolate and lavender, roasted banana and nutella, madagascan vanilla and honeycomb, and milk chocolate and toasted coconut just to name a few.

Pictured above is white chocolate and lavender (top) and roasted coconut (bottom). It was a total melt in your mouth combo.

shoes

You can never own too many shoes, especially Superga’s.

Superga’s come in different colours and styles. And I have a confession to make: I have nearly all of them. From plain white, to baby pink, rose gold, and shimmery gold, they all have a special place in my cupboard (and in my heart). Now I’ve just added these ultra gorgeous snakeskin’s to my collection.

How beautiful are they?

hand cream

If you have ever wondered what an ultra luxurious, yet affordable, hand cream feels and smells like, it is this absolute treat from Dove Derma Spa. It feels so soft, so rich and so creamy, like proper cashmere, let me add, and it also smells so luxurious.

I bought this tube from Clicks a few weeks back and I have used it religiously, every single day. Its nearly finished and when I go to the shops this week I’ll be buying another tube as well as a few more goodies from this range. So the next time you’re at Clicks, get yourself a tube of this. I swear, it will be the best hand cream you have ever laid your hands in/on 😉

Say Hello to Dooey … the Real Easter Bunny

If you have been looking for the real Easter bunny, he’s with me. And his name is Dooey. He also responds to names such as “Little Furball”, “Fluffy Chicken”, “Dooey the Doo-meister”, “Mr Chinwags” and lastly “Big Fluffy Termite”.

Maybe he isn’t the real Easter bunny, but he sure looks like him, to me.

Dooey is a Netherland Dwarf and is about 10 months old. After contemplating many different names for this little furball, the name we loved the most was Dooey. Mine and le bf’s favourite show is Malcolm in the Middle and our favourite person in the show is little Dewey Wilkerson – the naughty younger brother of Malcolm. If you look at Dooey quickly, he has the same face as Dewey Wilkerson. Ha!

Dooey’s favourite snacks include apple, but not Granny Smith apples as they’re too sour for him. He loves spinach (baby spinach, preferably) and carrots. Sometimes he will try something different, but he sticks to those 3 treats as he loves sweet things – he seems to have a sweet tooth just like me, his mum!

He is most active in the early morning and at night where you will find him running and doing binkies across the floor. You will also find Dooey lying against my feet when I am busy on my laptop, and if I am ignoring him, he will push his little nose against my slipper until I say “hellooooo tooootoooooo” and he will then run off and do a flip in the air.

Some of Dooeys hobbies include sleeping, napping, rolling over into a foetus position, nibbling on anything in his way and lastly, posing for the camera (as seen below). Dooey was once featured in Play-Bunny but hopes to grace the cover of Vogue magazine one day. He is working hard towards this dream, by sticking to a vegan diet and fitting in his daily exercise.

Anyway, Dooey has a message for everyone:

“Happy Easter, everybun!”

The Real Easter Bunny

5 reasons I fell in love with Shamwari Game Reserve

Shamwari Game Reserve has been on my wanderlust list for the longest time.

It has been a dream of mine to visit this prestigious game reserve that attracts tourists and locals alike. Because this is the year of making dreams come true, I recently visited Shamwari for a fun filled, magical two-night stay.

After my absolutely amazing experience, I simply fell in love with Shamwari.

Here is why …

1. Ultimate Safari Experience

Shamwari is a place where guests exist in harmony with nature and free roaming wildlife allowing for the ultimate safari experience. It is a 25 000 hectares, malaria free, private game reserve that is home to the Big 5. In addition to the Big 5 there are giraffes, hippos, cheetah and antelope, to name a few. With two game drives a day, one in the early morning and one in the evening, you will definitely leave with stories to tell.

On our visit we were lucky with our sightings. In actual fact, I don’t know whether it is luck or that we had the most knowledgeable ranger, Abel, who made our experience a lot more memorable and exciting.

Our very first game drive saw us listening out to the sounds of lions crunching on bones, which we were then lucky to find, thanks to Abels excellent tracking skills. The second game drive, Abel “surprised” us with a cheetah and four cubs playing in the grass. On our next game drive we watched a lion stalk some buck. And on our last game drive we watched a herd of elephants with their babies splashing in the water. Together with these phenomenal sightings, we spotted rhino, giraffe, antelope, zebra and warthog and a lot of tortoises.

2. Location

Shamwari is situated in the Eastern Cape and is less than an hours drive from Port Elizabeth. Shamwari is also a three hour drive from the Garden Route. Plettenberg Bay is my second home, and forms part of the Garden Route. We left Plettenberg Bay at about 9am and arrived at Shamwari just in time for lunch and our first afternoon game drive.

What I love about the location of Shamwari is in the morning you can be on the beach, soaking up the sun and in the afternoon, you can be at Shamwari in time for your first afternoon game drive.

3. The Lodges

Shamwari offers 6 luxury lodges all catering for different accommodation preferences:

♥ Sarili Lodge is a private oasis for a family or a group of friends as there are only 5 luxury rooms in this lodge.

♥ Eagles Crag Lodge is for the honeymoon couple as all 9 luxury suites are secluded so you can enjoy the utmost privacy and total relaxation. Along with the essentials, you will enjoy a private deck with a plunge pool, in and outdoor shower facilities and you will be provided with a bird spotting scope in your room.

♥ Lobengula Lodge offers 6 luxury villa’s mirroring traditional African “kraal’s”. This lodge is tucked away in the valley bush veld offering breathtaking views.

♥ Bayethe Tented Lodge is a tented paradise offering 12 luxury tents. Each detached tent also comes with its own plunge pool. This is definitely the lodge you’re looking for if you want the ultimate safari experience of camping in style (well, its more like glamping).

♥ Riverdene Family Lodge is Shamwari’s very own elegant family homestead with 9 luxury rooms. The lodge caters specifically for families and offers activities specially for the kids.

♥ Long Lee Manor is a gracious Edwardian Manor House in the heart of the African bush with 15 suites. This colonial style lodge boasts manicured gardens, pools and verandas all with magnificent breathtaking views.

Long Lee Manor

We arrived at Shamwari and were shown to our room at Long Lee Manor. What a welcoming change to stay in such a beautiful colonial style home in the heart of the African bush. We have only ever “roughed it” in the bush so staying in such a luxury manor was definitely a breathe of fresh air.

Our room was beautiful and spacious. My favourite feature was definitely the two daybeds to lie on and gaze out the patio window onto the reserve. I was hoping to see elephants in the distance but I did see giraffe heads bobbing up and down.

With a scorching temperature of 35 degrees, if we weren’t on a game drive, we found ourselves soaking up the sun in one of the two beautiful swimming pools at Long Lee Manor. One of the swimming pools overlooks a watering hole. So picture basking in the swimming pool, while watching animals in front of you. My favourite were definitely the warthogs hogging the waterhole 😉

4. The Food

From breakfast, to lunch and dinner, and even afternoon high tea, it was most definitely a food fiesta.

Breakfast was in the dining room and the buffet was endless. Lunch was by the patio overlooking the swimming pool and included some very delicious options. But dinner was the most special. On our first night we had a barbecue/braai at the boma. And on our second night we were treated to a three- course dinner in the dining room. The food was of a very high standard with endless options for everyones tastes.

If you know me by now, you will know tea time is my favourite time, especially when you get to have a slice of homemade lemon rosemary cake. Wow!

5. Born Free Foundation

What makes Shamwari one of a kind is their Born Free Foundation, which is a compassionate conservation and animal welfare. Born Free takes action worldwide to protect threatened species and stop animal suffering. How is this done? By rescuing animals from lives of misery in tiny cages and give them lifetime care. Born Free believes wildlife belongs in the wild and works to phase out zoos.

We visited the Born Free Foundation at Shamwari and witnessed the absolutely amazing job they do! These lions below were rescued from the most awful conditions in the circus. Although the animals at Born Free, like these lions, will never be fit enough to be returned into the wild, they most definitely enjoy better conditions at Born Free.

Did You Know?

Shamwari celebrates its 25th anniversary this year!

Happy Anniversary, Shamwari.

And there you have it, 5 reasons I fell in love with Shamwari Game Reserve.

It is the most wonderful and exclusive private game reserve that ensures a truly magical experience with memories to last a lifetime. So much so, I am counting down until I visit again.

For more information on Shamwari, click here.
♥

Thank you Shamwari for the getaway. As with all posts, the opinions are my own.

Dirt Therapy, Plettenberg Bay

a nursery / tea garden / coffee shop / gin bar.

If you follow me on Instagram you would have seen I was just in Plettenberg Bay, my second home. At the top of my to do list while in Plett was to visit Dirt Therapy. I have only ever heard and read truly remarkable things about this place so a first time visit was a must. I landed in Plett on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning I was already in the car on my way.

Dirt Therapy

Dirt Therapy is an indigenous plant nursery that was established in December 2014 by Katherine Barlow. The nursery evolved into a coffee shop and a bar (a gin bar, let me add). The whole place oozes with greenery and style. It feels like a little piece of tropical paradise in the heart of the Garden Route. Even the views are magical.

So the next time you’re in Plettenberg Bay and you looking to do a bit of retail (dirt) therapy for your home, or have a cup of coffee with a great view, or sip on G & T’s while watching the sunset, head to Dirt Therapy.

Book Club: You and Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepnes

0

Every now and then you find yourself getting lost in a book that sucks you in from the very start. All you want to do is sit down and read for hours, without being disturbed. But then you also want to savour the book and prolong finishing it, because it is just that good. This was the case with the two books in this book club post.

You and Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepnes.

You

When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card. There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.

As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder.

♥ I loved the story line, as well as the charm and humour of the narrator, Joe. He is intelligent and witty and just the way he talks is so funny. You kind of feel a connection to him by the way he lets you in on exactly what he is thinking. His narration is really funny but insane and horrifying at the same time. I found myself repeating some of the very funny one liners to my boyfriend. Even he laughed and he didn’t know what the story was about.

Joe is just funny!

The story is about Joe, a stalker, who is obsessed with Beck and spies on her. He goes to extreme measures thanks to social media by using email, Facebook and Twitter to find out all the necessary information he needs to know about Beck as well as all her friends. He is so totally and utterly obsessed with Beck that in order to ensure he has the perfect relationship with her, he gets rid of anyone along the way.

When the book finished, I was distraught. I just needed to know what happened to Joe. Thankfully, there’s a sequel …

Hidden Bodies

Joe Goldberg is no stranger to hiding bodies. In the past ten years, this thirty-something has buried four of them, collateral damage in his quest for love. Now he’s heading west to Los Angeles, the city of second chances, determined to put his past behind him. In Hollywood, Joe blends in effortlessly with the other young upstarts. He eats guac, works in a bookstore, and flirts with a journalist neighbor. But while others seem fixated on their own reflections, Joe can’t stop looking over his shoulder.

The problem with hidden bodies is that they don’t always stay that way. They re-emerge, like dark thoughts, multiplying and threatening to destroy what Joe wants most: true love. And when he finds it in a darkened room in Soho House, he’s more desperate than ever to keep his secrets buried. He doesn’t want to hurt his new girlfriend—he wants to be with her forever. But if she ever finds out what he’s done, he may not have a choice…

♥ The sequel, Hidden Bodies, is just as good as the first book, if not better. Joe’s narrative is still as dark and hilarious. He has now moved to Los Angeles to pursue another love interest. Along the way he faces another few challenges. But this doesn’t stop him.

What I loved about this book is at the end you have closure on what happened to Joe. As much as Joe is a scary creep, I fell in love with his humour, charm and wit. All ll I wanted to know was whether the Hidden Bodies would be found 😉

It is often said that a sequel should never be written because it will never be as good, but I found Hidden Bodies compliments You and together they are just one haunting and humorous novel.

My 3 Favourite Dishes from The Big Mouth

When people ask me what my favourite restaurant is at the moment, I always hesitate a bit to answer.

But lately this hasn’t been the case, because The Big Mouth is.

The Big Mouth is located at Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton. They have a big menu offering the very best of the very best. The menu is divided into a grill-section serving hot dishes cooked in a unique charcoal oven and a sushi section serving gourmet sushi and other dishes made from the specialised marble sushi bar.

We have eaten at The Big Mouth countless times. I have tried nearly everything on the menu, but for this post, I am going tell you what my 3 absolute favourite dishes from the sushi menu are.

♥ new style sashimi

salmon sashimi, fresh jalapeño, spring onion, toasted sesame seeds, soya sauce, ponzu, sesame oil.

♥ S.U.V

4/5 pieces of rainbow reloaded and 4/5 pieces of salmon california roll with creamy shrimp tempura.

♥ salmon sushi bowl

cubed raw salmon, avocado, edemame beans, shitake mshrooms, short grain brown rice, crispy onions, ginger, spring onion, toasted sesame seeds, chilli oil, sesame oil, soya sauce.

Not only is the food excellent, but the decor is something special too. The tones of black, white and blue with a checkered floor, comfortable leather booths and a white marble sushi bar definitely makes you feel like you’re sitting at a brasserie in the heart of New York City.

Have you eaten at The Big Mouth yet?

P.S. For dessert they have deep fried oreos with vanilla milk 🙂

P.P.S This is not a sponsored post, just genuine foodie love 😉

Tried, Tested & Love: My Favourite Things from the Body Shop

The Body Shop is my go to when I need some beauty supplies, a pick me or up or a little dose of retail therapy. My bathroom cabinets are filled to the brim but that doesn’t stop me from wanting more. I have every face mask, body exfoliant, body spray and body lotion, in every scent. I also have their loofahs, pumice stones and nail clippers, just to mention a few.

But anyway.

Here are my Five Favourite Things that I buy over and over … and over!

Vitamin E Intense Moisture Cream

This luxurious, silky moisturiser formulated especially for dry skin, is my favourite in my night time skin routine. I absolutely love it. I use it almost every night and it most definitely locks in the moisture and provides long lasting hydration to my skin. The cream is thick in texture but when you apply it to your skin, a lot goes a long way, and it spreads nicely. The fragrance is quite pungent but it has a refreshing luxurious scent, which is always welcome.

R160 for 50ml – more info here.

♥

The Body Shop Pink Grapefruit Shower Gel

I have one of these huge 750ml shower gels in my shower/bath at all times. I think they are good quality for money. A huge one like this could last 4 or 5 months, or even a bit longer if the boyfriend didn’t steal some regularly. Currently I have the pink grapefruit shower gel. The scent is very zesty, fresh and refreshing. The smell also lingers for a long while after using it.

♥

Nutriganics Soothing Eye Cream

This is a refreshing eye cream that smoothes and softens the delicate skin around the eye area. I love that it is lightweight and gentle while hydrating and refreshing. Overall it absorbs really well, and it isn’t too heavy for the eye area. I am onto my third one of these. I tend to use it even during the day when my eyes feel a little tired or heavy. It makes them feel so refreshed and rejuvenated.

R180 for 15ml – more info here.

♥

Moringa Body Mist

My absolute favourite scent from The Body Shop has to, has to, be moringa. I just love it. The scent is crisp, floral, and is infused with moringa seed oil. The scent is just perfect. This body mist is a body spray that comes out in an ultra-fine mist. I keep one in my handbag, in my bathroom and even on my desk for a little pick me up.

R150 for 100ml – more info here.

♥

Vitamin C Moisturiser SPF 30

Some days (well most days) when you don’t want to wear makeup but you still want to enhance the natural radiance of your skin, this is the cream to apply. It also contains SPF30 so it protects the skin from the sun at the same time. I use this nearly every day, and if I tell you how radiant my skin looks after having applied it, I am not even lying. I love how it hydrates, nourishes and protects the skin. This is like a multipurpose cream. Its a must, in my opinion, for every makeup bag.

Sunday Lunch at Roots, Forum Homini

a 6 course wine pairing lunch.

Just a short drive out of the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg, you will find yourself at a five star hotel called Forum Homini. This five star hotel is located in a private game reserve. It is known for its fascinating architecture, unique and luxury suites that are cut into the earth, just like caves, as well as a top fine dining restaurant called Roots.

Roots

Be it for a special occasion, a treat or a sophisticated meal, the 6 course wine pairing lunch/dinner at Roots is an absolute gourmet experience. The menu changes seasonally and each dish is perfectly curated with subtle African or Asian influences. Each dish is also paired with a wine that perfectly complements the flavours.

Sunday Lunch

We recently enjoyed a Sunday lunch at Roots.

We arrived on a beautiful summers day at about 12:30. The maître d’ showed us to our table which was situated overlooking the beautiful lake. With a few birds fluttering by, this natural setting really took us far away from city life.

First Course:
potato gnocchi: dehydrated parma ham, buttermilk labneh, pickled onions, butternut puree and charred peaches.

Second Course:
cured salmon: salmon tartare, pickled cucumber ribbons, yuzu gel, horseradish mousse.

Third Course:
duck breast: leg terrine, porcini puree, artichokes, cauliflower, pickled shimeji, sorrel

Fourth Course:
beef fillet: prime rib, smoked potato puree, glazed carrots, baby leeks, black garlic puree, onion herb crumble.

Fifth Course:
mango panna cotta: mango gel, coconut snow, popping candy, passion fruit siphon, coconut sorbet, passionfruit curd.

Sixth Course:
chocolate fudge sponge: dulcey dulce cream, banana ice cream, banana chips, hot fudge sauce, chocolate banana soil, salted caramel, pliable peanut butter ganache.

The amount of preparation and exquisite presentation is evident with each dish that came out of the kitchen. I found the whole experience to be a gastronomic feat. From learning about each different wine with every course, to appreciating the flavours. We left wanting more, yet were so full, and all of our taste buds were satisfied.

What I like about Roots is that they catered for any dietary requirements and they made any substitutions upon request. The boyfriend doesn’t eat pork or fish, so instead he had lamb and chicken. He loved how it wasn’t a slap dash quick fix substitute, but instead, both dishes were cooked and displayed to perfection.

If you’re looking for the ultimate foodie fiesta, and want to spoil your loved one for a special occasion, Roots is the restaurant. From the romantic setting, to being treated like royalty and the food being equally amazing, its definitely somewhere special.
