A Recipe for Delicious Carrot Cake Muffins

They predicted a very rainy weekend last weekend. And when it is rainy, what is better than staying home in the coziest pyjamas, with Netflix, a good book and all of the comfort food? So I planned ahead. I made roast lamb with all the trimmings, fresh fruit salad and delicious carrot cake muffins. I made enough of everything to last us a whole weekend of doing nothing.

Surprise, surprise. It didn’t rain once, but at least we had enough snacks to last us.

CARROT CAKE MUFFINS

For me, carrot cake just hits the spot when I am craving a delicious tea time treat … And also when the weather calls for a little comfort food either during winter or a rainy weekend in summer. These carrot cake muffins are moist, fluffy, scrumptious but not too sweet. With a little smear of cream cheese icing and a cup of tea, it is pure perfection.

For the Cupcakes:
1 cup flour
2 cups grated carrots
â…” cup oil
â…” cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt

1. Heat oven to 350ºF or 180ºC and grease a muffin tray.

2. In a large bowl beat the eggs until fluffy.

3. Gently stir in the grated carrots, oil and the rest of the ingredients until everything is combined. Be careful not to over mix!

4. Fill the muffin tins about 2/3 full. Bake the muffins for 20-25 minutes until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Remove from oven and cool completely before the icing.

Cream Cheese Icing
½ cup cream cheese (room temperature)
¼ cup butter (room temperature)
1½ cups icing/powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
50 gm pecan nuts

1. Whip the cream cheese and the butter for about 5 minutes.

2. Then add the vanilla and icing sugar until light and fluffy.

3. Once the cupcakes have cooled, smear as much icing as you like and then sprinkle with the pecan nuts.

Enjoy! They are so easy and so quick to make.

Comment below if you love carrot cake as much as me 😉

Plettenberg Bay’s Secret Hideout: Kurland Hotel

Situated along the famous Garden Route, just outside of Plettenberg Bay,
lies a luxurious boutique country hotel …

… Kurland Hotel

Kurland Hotel is a mere 20 km’s outside of Plettenberg Bay. With the beautiful Outeniqua Mountains as its backdrop, the hotel has a setting like no other. As you drive through the black iron gates, romantic Cape Dutch architecture, a blanket of lush lawns, fragrant rose gardens, paddocks and polo fields welcome you.

I grew up in Plettenberg Bay, but I couldn’t wait to play tourist and explore this small towns best kept secret.

So on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon, this hotel captured us with its easy-going atmosphere and private country home feel. We relished in the weather and savoured what promised to be a luxuriously cosy night. The weather playing its part, the fireplace blazing, everything was perfect and time felt at a complete standstill.

TEA TIME

Tea time at Kurland is a royal affair. From 3:30pm onwards High Tea is served. When you think of High Tea, you think of a formal gathering around a table of treats. At Kurland it is a little different but so very delightful. You can choose where you would like to sit. Either in the library, the dining room, one of the many quaint lounges or on the terrace. Selection then comes between scones, the cake of the day, or a savoury treat. Or have everything, if you wish.

After check in, we gathered on the terrace over looking the main pool area. The tea was delicious, the slice of lemon cake was moreish, the chocolate cake was decadent and we lapped up the absolute serenity.

THE ROOM

The hotel has 12 lavishly kitted out suites, each with their own unique features. The luxury and superior suites all have private lofts. The luxury suites also have secluded courtyards and water features, while the superior suites have private plunge pools and magnificent views.

After tea time, we were taken to our room, the superior suite in the rose garden. It was quite a walk from the reception area, but being so far away from the main hotel area ensured privacy and peacefulness. Upon entering the room, we took delight in the “rose theme”, a luxuriously elegant, homely and country feeling. The decor suitably comprised of a soothing colour scheme of white, rose pink and beige. Other notable features is the fireplace, lounge area, spacious bathroom with a view and a walk in cupboard.

The balcony opens onto a terrace which has panoramic views of the estate, as well as a little plunge pool perfect for summer. This terrace was the perfect spot for our morning coffee with a book in hand.

With the rain outside, the fire going and the most beautiful room, there was no way we were going to head out. So it was a bubble bath, robe and room service night in.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT KURLAND HOTEL

Kurland is conveniently situated just outside of Plett. If you’re one for a beach holiday, with just a short drive away, you can find yourself on one of Plett’s world famous white sandy beaches. Or if you prefer country living, you can enjoy the very best the estate has to offer. At Kurland Hotel, you get the best of both worlds, which to me, is perfect for a memorable holiday.

The views, setting and atmosphere at Kurland is awe inspiring and so very country. The hotel ensures guests soak this all up by offering horse riding or four wheeler rides around the estate. Our favourite thing, however, was going for walks as often as we could. Coming from the city of Johannesburg, it is not often you get to walk through the beautiful country side, so we took full advantage. From the rose gardens, to the paddocks, and the little farmyard with pigs, we loved every little stop we made.

Another little feature I loved at Kurland is the fact that there is no tea/coffee facilities in the room. So when you want tea or coffee, you dial the restaurant and it will be delivered to your room straight away. That means a freshly brewed cup of coffee or cup of tea, on a tray, first thing in the morning (in bed). And if you request some biscuits, you get the most delicious butter biscuits.

My favourite part of any hotel stay is the food. And the food at Kurland was absolutely exceptional. From the treats at tea time, to the gourmet room service we had at dinner, and lastly breakfast, we most certainly ate our way through our stay.

What I loved most about the hotel is the fact that it feels like home, with an ultra luxurious feel. The beautiful setting, luxurious surrounding and personalised service made for a wonderful nights stay in the heart of the Garden Route.

More info on the hotel, click here.

If you’ve never been to Plettenberg Bay before, here are 10 PHOTOS THAT WILL INSPIRE YOU TO VISIT.

Thank you Kurland Hotel for the stay over. As with all posts, the opinions are my own.

Exciting New Beauty Products I Am Loving

You know how I feel about the latest and greatest in the beauty department. It just gets me so darn excited. There have been a lot of new product launches and I couldn’t be more excited to share the ones I have been absolutely loving with you. Grab yourself a smoothie (read here) and lets chat about these new products …

DOVE PURELY PAMPERING BODY WASH

I am the most excited for this new range by Dove. Why? Because their ultra luxurious Purely Pampering range is a firm favourite of mine. So when a box of the latest offering landed on my door step, I couldn’t have been more happy. Dove have expanded this range to include two new varieties:

1. Shea Butter with Warm Vanilla, and 2. Coconut Milk with Jasmine Petals.

Each variant is pampering and indulgent, and are both a feast for the senses. The fragrances are intoxicating, but not in a bad way. Rather in a way that you want to sniff each scent for hours and hours because you cannot get enough of them. The warm vanilla gives the shea butter a comforting feel, and together it is truly delightful on the nose. The jasmine petals give the coconut milk a refreshing scent, and leaves you wanting more.

If I have to say which is my favourite scent, it would be hard to choose, but I would settle on the Coconut Milk and Jasmine Pearls. Thats because I love all things coconutty.

The formula of the body washes are thick and creamy, making them that much more luxurious. A little goes a long way as they foam up once they’re in contact with water.  Your skin is left feeling clean, hydrated and moisturised.

Tip: I like to use these as a shaving cream. It produces such a rich, creamy lather, and at the same time is moisturising and nourishing your skin.

Price: 250 ml for R 37.99 – available at all major retailers.

Palmer’s FlipBalms

I don’t go anywhere without my Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Swivel Stick because it is simply the best (read more here), and now I don’t go anywhere without my FlipBalms! Palmer’s have now introduced new Cocoa Butter Formula FlipBalms and gosh are these fun! They’re dome shaped lip balms that flip to open and they come in three juicy flavours: Ripe Mango, Creamy Coconut and Juicy Watermelon.

The lip balms contain everything you want a lip balm to contain: pure cocoa butter, raw shea butter and vitamin E. They are also free from parabens, phthalates, petrolatum and gluten.

I am a lip balm collector and hoarder and I am so in love with these Flipbalms. They are nourishing, soothing and moisturising. They make your lips feel ultra soft and delicious.

Mwa!

INVISIBBOBLE

When I opened up my #RBSecretBox (more about that in this post) and saw an Invisibobble staring at me, goodness I was happy. When a lifetime supply of Invisibobble landed on my door step, I was ecstatic. Invisibobble are Gods little gifts to us girls with hair, be it long hair or short hair. And here is why …

These traceless hair ties are magical, in every way. Because they are made of artificial resin, they are water and sweat proof. They have a smooth surface which is antibacterial. They don’t leave any kinks in your hair, they don’t tug at your hair so say goodbye to those pesky headaches, and lastly, they have a strong hold thanks to their unique shape.

Invisibobble have now introduced the POWER and the NANO!

If your hair is extra voluminous and needs an extra strong hold, then the POWER is for you. Or if your hair tends to fly all over the show in an intense workout, then your hair could also do with the POWER.

R100.00 for a pack of 3 from RetailBox.

On the other hand, the NANO is a micro Invisibobble. So small and teeny, but don’t forget dynamite comes in small packages. The NANO can be used as a hair tie or a bobby pin. The NANO can be used for a braided style, a casual half bun or for an updo needing a strong hold.

What? Did I just hear you go “huh?” … Take that “huh?” back now, because I put it to the test, with a side braid and a half bun, and the NANO sure does perform. I will be taking the NANO with me to the hairdresser when I have an updo done for a wedding I’m going to in a few weeks. Stay tuned!

Caribbean Tan Tinted Body Bronzer Shimmer Cream

Gone are the days of having to sit for hours in the dangerous sun to just to give your skin a bit of colour. Say hello to the new and improved Tinted Body Bronzer Shimmer Cream. The packaging of this beauty has been upgraded and the formula has been enhanced too. The cream is formulated with vitamin E and cranberry seed extract so it hydrates and protects your skin.

A few Sundays ago, it was a real scorcher. It was so so so hot. So hot you just want to stay in the pool all day. It was a day we had to be at a birthday tea and all I wanted was to wear a beautiful summers dress but I was so scared my extremely-very-pale skin would scare everyone. So I put this Shimmer Cream to the test. I thought if it comes out terribly, I can just wear a tracksuit and act feverish.

I applied it in the morning and if I tell you how perfect it looked a few hours later, I know you won’t believe me. But really, it looked like I had just returned from a week in the Seychelles. I applied a very small amount that spread nicely and gradually. It gave my skin a beautiful, subtle but glamorous shimmer. When I came home that night, I showered like normal, and it washed off with no stains left on my skin.

This is a product I will be stock piling in my bathroom for when days or nights call for a bit of shimmer.

Price: R59.95 from Clicks and Dischem.

Vaseline Intensive Care Spray Moisturisers

I have saved the best for last!

If you are lazy, put your hands up! Both my hands are up very high, so don’t feel embarrassed.

I will admit something and please don’t judge – I do not moisturise every day because: 1. I am lazy, 2. It takes up too much time and 3. I hate that sticky feeling afterwards.

There I said it.

But this has all changed. Seriously! Thanks to the very new Vaseline Intensive Care Spray Moisturisers, which I am obsessed with. There are 3 variants:

1. Deep Restore, 2. Aloe Fresh and 3. Cocoa Butter.

The sprays disperse a super fine mist that nourish and moisturise the skin. The mist absorbs ultra fast and you’re not left feeling sticky afterwards. These sprays are so convenient and so easy to use. And let me tell you, they work even when they’re upside down. So you can reach that part of your back thats been ignored for years 😉

Gone are the days when I don’t moisturise. With these sprays I have been moisturising as soon as I hop out the shower. It is that easy and convenient.

Now you can see why I left the best for last!

Price: R89.99 from all major retailers.

Where to Have Sundowners in Johannesburg

Johannesburg also has beautiful sunsets, you just need to know where to find them.

Everyone loves a good sunset. That time of the day, when everything starts winding down, a cocktail or two are enjoyed and the sky starts showing off. Although Johannesburg doesn’t have a mountain, nor a beach, we do have a beautiful skyline that is the perfect backdrop for a beautiful sunset.

Chasing the sunset is my favourite. Whether I am on holiday or I am home in Johannesburg, I love to lap up the last bit of rays and savour the awe-inspiring moment.

HERE ARE MY 3 FAVOURITE PLACES TO ENJOY SUNDOWNERS IN JOHANNESBURG

Island Bar at Southern Sun Hyde Park

When le bf and I feel like escaping, this is where we head to, because the view from here is so beautiful. The cocktails are delicious, the sunsets are vivid and on the weekends there is a nice vibe.

Address: 1st Road, Hyde Park, Sandton

Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff

This hotel is known for having the best views of the city of Johannesburg. Top this with a refreshing ice cold beverage, some delicious urban bites, a view of the Jacarandas in full bloom and a resident DJ on the decks. This is what an average sundowner session on a Thursday evening looks like for me and my friends.

What? Sundowner DJ Sessions

Where? Flames, Four Seasons The Westcliff, every Thursday from 5:30pm

Address: 67 Jan Smuts Avenue

Reservations: (011) 481 6000

Le bf and I recently stayed over at The Palazzo Hotel (you can read more about that here). We enjoyed the most magical sunset from our bedroom window. Ever since our stay over, we’ve been dreaming about going back.

You can still watch the sunset, with a drink in hand, from the terrace of Medeo. By the way, their strawberry daiquiri is the best I’ve ever had 🙂

A Simple Cinnamon and Apple Breakfast Bowl

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day … And so is dessert. If I could live on one or the the other forever I would, but I can’t, so I have to make dessert for breakfast, or have breakfast for dessert. And this is what this recipe is for …

A simple cinnamon and apple breakfast bowl, that can also be eaten for dessert.

The recipe is so easy. It takes no more than 15 minutes and all you need are the basic ingredients that are already in your fridge. (Thats if you keep a bag of Granny Smith apples in your fridge as a basic … but because they are so healthy, you should.)

A bag of Granny Smith Apples – peeled, cored and halfed (I always get mine from my nearest Food Lovers Market)

Cinnamon,

Brown Sugar or Honey

Yoghurt,

Granola (I like this one from Faithful-To-Nature)

Directions

Boil the apples in water that is just enough to cover the apples. Keep an eye on them and once they are soft enough (if a knife goes through them) rinse any excess water, if there is any. You will then need a masher (yes, the one you mash potatoes with) and start mashing the apples. While you’re mashing them in the pot over a very low heat, add the cinnamon and brown sugar (or honey) to your desired taste. I love the cinnamon flavour, so I add quite a heap. I use a little bit of brown sugar just to take away some of the sourness of the apples. But it is all up to your desired tastes 🙂
Once the apple compote is ready, you can transfer it to a container and store it in the fridge, until breakfast time … or dessert. Or even a little afternoon snack.

Put some in a bowl, top with greek yoghurt and some granola for that added crunch. I kid you not, you will love love love this treat.

This yummy breakfast bowl (or dessert) is perfect for any season. It has delicious warm cinnamon flavours that are perfect for winter. And is also packed with refreshing green apples that are perfect for summer. As delicious as it is, it so healthy.

DID YOU KNOW?

♥ Cinnamon is one of the most delicious and healthiest spices. It is loaded with super powerful antioxidants as well as anti-inflammatory properties, that help the body fight infections and repair tissue damage. It can also lower blood sugar levels and reduce heart disease risk factors.

♥ Granny Smith Apples are the healthiest apples. And this is why I like to use them. They are naturally low in calories, full of fibre, rich in antioxidants and regulate blood sugar levels.

If you make this delicious recipe, please let me know what you think.

A Night at Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa

What makes a hotel a boutique hotel?

The definition of boutique hotel can be rather vague. So after having done the necessary research, I have come to a comprehensive conclusion. A boutique hotel is an intimate hotel that provides guests with ultra-personalised service and exclusive accommodation.

Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa is all of this and more.

On a recent nights stay at this exceptionally luxurious and extremely exclusive five-star hotel, we enjoyed what can be considered as our best hotel stay ever.

Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa is a sanctuary in the heart of Sandton, Johannesburg. Sandton is a major business hub and shopping haven. As you drive through the hotel gates, you enter a different world, leaving all of this behind you. It feels like you’ve driven for miles and arrived at an oasis far far away. Picture Palladian inspired architecture, lush lawns, beautiful gardens and a Balinese inspired Spa.

THE ROOMS

The hotel has 40 luxurious suites. Each suite has been decorated to the highest standards. From Grand Chateau Suites that can be enjoyed by group travellers, to the newly renovated and decorated Courtyard Suites, for the discerning romantic couple, there is a room for everyone. But if a tree house is more your thing, there is also a Tree House Studio for a perfect family stay.

We enjoyed our stay in one of the individually decorated Courtyard Suites. Because the rooms are individually decorated, no two rooms look the same. However every room is spacious and modern with perfect hand painted finishes, a fire place and granite vanities in the bathroom.

THE SPA

The Spa at Fairlawns is definitely one of a kind. It is a Balinese-stye Spa with a range of therapies and signature Asian-inspired treatments. The Spa has a heated plunge pool, a spa bath, a Chinese daybed and pod swing chairs, just to name a few of the features. There is an extensive selection of facials, massage therapies, body treatments, as well as packages for every one.

The Spa has a holistic approach to wellness, and is a true oasis of serenity in the heart of Johannesburg.

Even if you don’t have a treatment, walking through the Balinese Gardens, is just as therapeutic for the mind, body and soul. And that is exactly what we did. We took a stroll through the gardens and left feeling inspired and rejuvenated. I cannot wait to return for a treatment though!

THE GROUNDS

The hotel is surrounded by lush gardens, rolling lawns and plentiful birdlife. The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful as they are well maintained and manicured. From rose bushes, bougainvilleas and massive trees, it doesn’t feel like you’re in the middle of Johannesburg, but rather on a beautiful estate in the countryside. The hotel ensures guests can take full advantage of the beautiful gardens, by having placed little gazebos all over, and not just by the pool area.

We certainly took full advantage of the gazebos with a good book and a drink in hand. It was truly relaxing and calmed all the senses.

DINING

Dining at Fairlawns is an affair on its own. Even if you’re not a guest of the hotel, you’re more than welcome to wine and dine at here for a special occasion. If fine dining is your preference, you can do so at Amuse Bouche with candlelit tables and romantic music in the background. Or Manor House Bistro is more for casual dining where you will choose from café style meals and enjoy a more relaxed homely meal.

Fairlawns is also famous for their classic high tea spread.

The thought of getting out of our comfortable robes and into clothing scared us, so we indulged in room service for dinner. The beautiful presentation of every dish we ordered was on par with the fantastic and distinct flavours. The condensed milk creme brûlée is well worth returning for too.

Breakfast the next morning was just as outstanding. From oysters, smoked salmon and champagne the variety was endless.

The Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa is an absolute oasis from the hustle and bustle of a vibrant Johannesburg. It is a unique boutique hotel that oozes ultimate luxury in the suites, true decadence in the food and, most of all, absolute serenity in its gardens and Spa. The staff are nothing less than courteous and efficient and ensured our stay is a memorable one.

If you’re looking for an ultimate weekend away, Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa is the place.

Thank you Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa for the stay over. As with all posts, the opinions are my own.

How to Style a Pair of Reebok Classic Sneakers

How cute are Reebok Classic’s? So cute, right? I have vague childhood memories of my mom wearing these Rebook Classic’s all through winter. And fetching us from school in them. My dream was to own a pair also.
They’ve made a huge comeback now, thankfully, so I finally own a pair of Princess. Dreams do come true, you know 😉

These sneakers are so trendy right now but don’t let the old fashioned look scare you off. If styled correctly, you’ll be right on trend … and because they’re Classic, any look will go.

Here are a few outfit ideas on how I style my Classic’s:

1. CASUAL

Top – Cotton on

Jeans – Topshop

2. PINK AND SPORTY

Jeans – Diesel

Jersey – Old 😉

3. SUMMER LOVING

Top – H&M

Shorts – H&M

4. IN THE NAVY

Jeans – Diesel

Jersey – Cotton On

5. PRETTY IN PINK

Dress – Sissy Boy

img_0049

6. SPORTY

Tracksuit Pants – Woolworths

Shirt – River Island

Reebok Classic Princess

So as you can see Reebok Classic’s are such a versatile pair of shoes that everyone needs in their wardrobe because they can be worn with just about anything. You can wear them with jeans, a dress, leggings and even shorts. They’re a great pair of shoes for travelling also. Having said that, I wore mine every day in Hong Kong. They were so so so comfortable, I didn’t get any sore feet and to think I walked on average 15 km’s a day in them is unbelievable. Price: R749 from Reebok.

♥

P.S. This is NOT a sponsored post. I am just sharing my love for a pair of shoes with my readers 🙂

Afternoon Tea at 54 on Bath

While tea time is undoubtedly my favourite time, afternoon tea is my ultimate time. Afternoon tea is a decadent affair and when done right it is a perfect opportunity to sit back and relax. It is a social event in the afternoon where you sip on tea and snack on delightful treats, in the afternoon to curb off any hunger until dinner time.

It has been said that 54 on Bath puts on quite a spread for afternoon tea. So, as the inquisitive person I am, I had to see if these rumours were true to their word.

LEVEL FOUR AT 54 ON BATH

54 on Bath is centrally located in Rosebank, Johannesburg with just a short walk to Rosebank Mall, some famous art galleries and is in the centre of the entertainment hub. When you walk through the front door however, you leave the hustle and bustle behind you. You are greeted by a hotel that oozes modern chic, contemporary finishes and a vibrant colour palette.

Afternoon tea is served at the Level Four restaurant. Level Four is a classy, dynamic little spot known for its contemporary cuisine and fine dining. The restaurant also has a cute little terrace with well manicured gardens. When the sun is shining, the terrace is the perfect spot for afternoon tea. If the weather is a bit on the rainy side, the inside of Level Four is just as cosy for a cup of tea.

We enjoyed our afternoon tea in the lush gardens in the terrace, which had me feeling like I was in Wonderland with Alice.

THE TEAS

Afternoon tea starts off with a welcome drink of apple and cinnamon iced tea. On a hot Spring day, it was just what you need to quench your thirst before eating your way through the tiers of treats. You are then given a menu of tea’s to choose from, with a variety that will leave the Queen impressed. The best part is you can order as many teas as you like. So you can work your way through the entire menu, leaving satisfied you tried all the varieties and flavours. From Chinese to English, spiced to flavoured, and Rooibos to Green tea, everyone is catered for. According to the boyfriend, he perfectly described it as an afternoon spent tea tasting.

Our favourite was the Red of Africa blend. A delicate rooibos blended with sweet tea spices and marigold.

THE TREATS

The tea time treats are served on a traditional three-tiered stand that is brought to your table. The selection of savoury and sweet delights will satisfy every tooth. From salmon quiche, to cucumber sandwiches, little tartlets and slices of cake, the selection certainly wowed us. The highlight though were the light and fluffy scones served with delicious homemade jam and clotted cream … Just how traditional scones should be served.

The baked goods were so moreish that thankfully the trays are replenished as soon as the food disappears.

The afternoon tea doesn’t end there …

There is also a display table offering an array of macaroons, fresh fruit and sugar. Yip, sugar. From cubed and crystals to grains and even syrups. Oh and more tea.

Afternoon tea at 54 on Bath sure is a feast for the eyes and the tummy. The spread was elaborate, the feast was satisfying and the whole ambience was sophisticated.

So, the rumours are true … Afternoon tea at 54 on Bath is an experience and a half.

Visit 54 on Bath’s website here, or Level Four’s website here to make a reservation.

New Places To Eat In Johannesburg

While I do have a list of my favourite places to eat in Johannesburg, I am always ready to try a new spot. Be it a bar, restaurant, coffee shop, juice bar, a supermarket or any little spot that sells something you can nibble on, I am there like a bear.

Here are 3 new foodie spots that have I have been loving lately …

JACKSONS REAL FOOD MARKET

Jacksons Real Food Market is not your ordinary grocery store. This is because Jacksons is all about local, sustainable and ethical food produce. What does this mean for us? Well this means you can do all of your grocery shopping under one roof for all things organic, free range and healthy … And not have to hop from one shop to the next looking for your favourite treats.

You will find locally sourced, organically grown fruit and veg, top local cheeses, non-GMO and wood fired breads, the finest grass fed eats, and so much more.

Not only is it a supermarket (well, a real food market) but they also have a restaurant serving up the healthiest breakfast, lunches and dinners. You will also find a little Origin Coffee Roasting Bar for your instant caffeine fix, a fresh juice bar for your daily green juice and more, as well as Patachou Patisserie serving the most delicious little tea time treats. And the best macaroons I have ever had!

Website: here

Address: 300 Bryanston Drive, Bryanston, Johannesburg

THE BIG MOUTH

Not so newish, but new to me, is The Big Mouth in Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton. From grilled seafood, to gourmet burgers (the boyfriends favourite) to a world class sushi menu, there is something for everyone. But what I love most is the sushi menu, especially the new style sashimi (as pictured).

Sushi in South Africa is mediocre. Its either a little above average or its not great at all, and there isn’t anything in-between. But I have found The Big Mouth to be exceptionally above average, and I love sushi! They have a huge selection to choose from and it is of the highest quality. From tuna or salmon tartar tacos, rock shrimp tempura, salmon skin futomaki, and spicy tuna maki, they’re all a favourite of mine.

Website: click here

RITUAL CAFE

The little suburb of Linden has slowly but surely become my favourite hangout. Its home to some of the best restaurants and coffee shops Jozi has to offer. And now its also home to the cosiest bistro with the most delicious food – Ritual Cafe.

Ritual Cafe is a bistro style restaurant with an intimate atmosphere, whose head chef (and owner) is Sean Ackermann. The menu is small, which means the quality of the food is there. But as small as the menu is, there’s a dish for every taste. Mussels in a curry sauce, seared salmon, burgers, gnocchi with walnuts and blue cheese, and a thai style vegetable curry (my favourite), are just a few of the options. As well as speciality desserts, like their famous homemade fig ice cream, for the perfect ending.

Johannesburg hasn’t seen a restaurant of this calibre for a long time. Think a cosy and intimate vibe, with quality, tasty and flavourful food, that is simple but superb.

Address is 32 7th Street, Linden (Open Tuesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner).

Lunch in an Hour at Four Seasons The Westcliff

“Lunch in an hour, can it be done?”

This is the question I often ask myself as an attorney who doesn’t know what a lunch break is.

And yes, it can be done.

I have just returned to my desk after having been blown away by the latest offering of the Four Seasons The Westcliff Johannesburg, their Hour of Power business lunch.

We all know how precious a one hour lunch break is and how fast the time goes, so we need to spend them wisely. Four Seasons The Westcliff Johannesburg have launched a 1 hour express business lunch, for this reason. What you get is a sumptuous 4 course lunch served on a single plate. A cold starter, hot starter, main course, dessert, and finally, tea or coffee and a tray of treats. The lunch is quick, uninterrupted, innovative and most of all delicious. This means you can have a productive business meeting, while eating the very best, all in an hour. The business lunch menu changes weekly, so there is no stopping you from returning every week.

What I Ate …

Cold Starter (top right)

Crispy poached free range egg with pea mousseline, nasturtium and mange tout with toasted almonds and aged balsamic vinegar.

Hot Starter (bottom left)

Roma tomato consommé with ricotta dumplings, tortellini and edamame with fresh basil.

Main Course (bottom right)

Herb crusted yellowfin tuna served on curry lentils and braiied leeks.

Dessert (top left)

Lemon tart with citrus crème fraiche, meringue fingers and marinated seasonal berries with mint.

The food was absolutely delicious. As you cut into the crispy poached egg, it just oozed, which is what I love. The tortellini in the consommé was exceptional with such flavour. Just one was not enough, thats how good it was. The tuna was perfectly done and full of flavour. The lemon tart was refreshing and a perfect ending.

The meal doesn’t end there. You also get a bowl of treats with your tea or coffee. Chefs specialities of marshmallows, turkish delight and little chocolate nibbles.

The View

The Four Seasons The Westcliff Johannesburg is conveniently located atop an elevated hillside offering panoramic views of the city. You will look down over the city, Johannesburg Zoo (if you’re lucky you can even spot the elephants) as well as the canopy of trees that make Johannesburg beautiful.

In a few weeks time when the Jacaranda trees are in full bloom, the view is absolutely magical. It basically looks like a purple carpet over the city. Pictured below, you can see the Jacarandas are starting to blossom. A delicious lunch, in an hour, with a view of Johannesburg, what more can you ask for in a lunch hour?

Favourite Pasta Dishes in & around Jozi

6

Pasta!

My absolute favourite word, favourite food … and my favourite food group.

I was definitely an Italian in my past life. I live and dream Italian food, especially pasta.

Here are my favourite pasta dishes at 5 different Italian restaurants in and around Jozi.

Spaghetti Aglio Olio @ Pomodoro, Morningside

This is as simple as it gets. Spaghetti with garlic, olive oil, chilli and parsley. And if you want a little saltiness, anchovies are optional. This is my favourite at Pomodoro, and I always ask for just a few anchovies, when I just feel like a plain simple but tasty pasta. With a little sprinkle of parmesan cheese, it is beyond simply delicious.

Pomodoro: Morningside Shopping Centre, Rivonia Road, Morningside, Sandton.

Spaghetti Bolognese & Linguine Pescatore @ Mastrantonio, Illovo

Mastrantonio in Illovo isn’t your normal Mastrantonio. It’s real, authentic Italian food in a smart and sophisticated setting. It is the perfect spot for a special occasion, like date night or a little celebration. This was my restaurant of choice when I qualified as an Attorney last year, so it holds a special place in my heart. Aaaaw!

Le Bf always, without a doubt, opts for spaghetti bolognese. As a creature of habit if he finds something he loves, he sticks to it. And according to him this spaghetti bolognese is the best ever! I on the other hand love trying new dishes. And pictured here is the linguine pescatore. The most delicious seafood pasta with a perfect taste and flavour.

Bonus: the complimentary bread basket with a variety of breads and olive oil and balsamic vinegar is always a winner. Especially the flat bread- it is crispy, crunchy and simply superb.

Penne with Asparagus and Baby Marrow @ Tortellino D ‘Oro, Oaklands

Tortellini D’Oro is another smart Italian which Le BF and I love.
Le BF either has the beef lasagna or the penne Bolognese. Yip, he still sticks to his two favourites here.
I either have spaghettini papalina or penne with asparagus and baby marrow.

Spaghettini is a much thinner spaghetti, which I love. And papalina is like a creamy napoletana sauce with mushrooms. It is superb!

Penne with asparagus and baby marrow is on the specials menu, so its not a permanent item on the menu. It has the perfect asparagus flavour which isn’t too strong but still tasty. With a sprinkling of parmesan it is beyond delicious.

Fettucine Alfredo Originale @ Pronto, Craighall Park

Pronto is our go to Italian restaurant when we craving authentic pasta dishes that aren’t too fancy. Between Le BF and I we share ravioli and alfredo originale (as theres no ham). Both dishes are our faves, so we share to get the best of both worlds.

Dessert: Pronto’s Tiramisu is the best.

Spaghetti Arrabiatta @ Da Graziella, Edenvale

Da Graziella is the cosiest little Italian nook in Edenvale. Not only is the food superb but the cosy atmosphere is my favourite. Da Graziella is definitely one of Joburgs best keep secrets and is possibly my favourite little restaurant by far! The food is unbelievable, all the staff know me by name (yes, we eat here once a week) and it is just my home away from home.

My go to dish is spaghetti arrabiatta with a little bit of cream; and it is perfect!

Essence Forbidden Volume Rebel Mascara

If you are a regular here on the blog you’ll know that I swear by Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara and I find that not many mascaras can compare. It is an all rounder that does the job and ticks all the right boxes for a wonderful mascara! So when I try a new mascara, I hope it will tick a few of the boxes just to be as great.

Essence have brought out a new range of Forbidden Volume Mascara. In this range is the Essence Forbidden Volume Rebel Mascara which I have been trying for a couple of weeks now. And I must say this new mascara has definitely impressed me! The wand has a slight hourglass shape to it with natural bristles and the formula is very wet. At first, I doubted the whole application of it, but with two coats the results were amazing! My eyelashes had dramatic volume, curl and length and looked amazing!

I have been reaching for this mascara for special occasions when I want va-va-voom lashes that are show stoppers. I also love that its super affordable for such quality mascara, with a price of only R64.95 from Dischem. I’m lucky that I already have long, thick lashes, so I’m yet to try falsies, but with the phenomenal results of this mascara, falsies are out of the question … For me, that is.

Lux Sheer Twilight Body Wash

I am a big fan of LUX body washes. Each range offers an ultra luxurious bath time treat that leaves your skin feeling soft to the touch and your senses sparked. If you peek into my bathroom you will find a great selection of LUX bath products, so when I received a bottle of the new Sheer Twilight body wash, I knew she would feel right at home.

LUX Sheer Twighlight body wash has notes of deep intense black orchid and juniper oil. What makes this body wash a little different is the scent/perfume lasts up to 8 hours, leaving you with delectably fragrant skin the whole day.

I love that the fragrance is bold and beautiful (no, not the show).

The body wash is available in 3 sizes: 200 ml for R24.99, 400 ml for R36.99, 750 ml for R58.99

Lush Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter

If you haven’t heard of Lush’s Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter where have you been? It softens hard skin all over the body, especially the cuticles.

I tend to suffer from very dry cuticles and this has helped a lot! The cream/butter is quite thick in consistency, but it sinks in and absorbs into the skin very quickly. The scent is also delicious. Think of lemon meringue pie with extra lemon. Mmmmm!

Inoar Flowers Shampoo & Conditioner

Inoar have just launched a limited edition flowers range shampoo and conditioner just in time for Spring. The shampoo and conditioner has an extremely natural and light cherry blossom formula.
Did you know that cherry blossom symbolises renewal … and the start of new life to your beauty. This is perfect timing, especially with the promise of Spring comes the promise of beautiful hair 😉

This only recently arrived at my door step but I have washed my hair twice with it since. The shampoo lathers well, my hair felt clean and fresh, and the conditioner has made my ends feel nourished and moisturised. Bonus: the scent is amazing. If the scent of spring was bottled, you would find it in this new range by Inoar.

The duo pack retails for R490 and you can shop it here.

Rendezvous by Gelish

At the end of winter I had my nails done at Sorbet, like always, and chose Rendezvous by Gelish. It is a perfect shade that isn’t too red, too purple or too dark. It can be classified as more of a cranberry colour with hues of red, pink and purple.

I loved this shade so much that I will definitely do my nails with it again.
