Online food delivery services we using in lockdown (Johannesburg)

meat online for meat

We have ordered a few times from www.meat-online.co.za because the service is amazing! Not only is the service amazing but the quality of the meat is excellent too. The beef ribs are *thumbs up* and so are the lamb chops, especially on the braai! It is obviously different for every area, but delivery took one day. The meat also comes vacuum packed so you can store it for long which is great, especially now.

Not many restaurants serve chalmar beef, but one that does is Chaplins Grill in Hurlingham Sandton and we frequent this restaurant often! Things I am loving and things I am missing while staying home

South Africa is in a total lockdown, as you know. We’re only allowed to go to the shops for essentials. We can’t walk in the streets, we can’t go visit friends and we can’t even take scenic drives out of the city. But it is for the greater good of the people and I am seriously not complaining. I know that at the end of all of this, we will all be okay. Because we just have to be!

I have come to love a few, if not a lot, of things in this lockdown way of life. I decided to go into this lockdown with a positive mind set and take each day as it is. I told myself that it is what it is, and because I cannot control the situation, I must make the most of it, which I have! Some days are hard which is obvious, but other days are as good as I make them.

So in this post I am going to share all the things I am missing in lockdown and end off with all the things I am loving in lockdown, because in true Minkys style, I want to end this post off on a positive note.

Things I am missing in lockdown …

  • Walking in nature and getting fresh air.
  • Saturday morning Parkruns and coffee dates afterwards.
  • Sitting at an actual restaurant and ordering delicious food that isn’t made by me.
  • All my favourite restaurants.
  • All my favourite food at these favourite restaurants of mine.
  • Going for a drive out of the city and heading anywhere.
  • Having a glass of wine with my friends while chatting away.
  • Ordering coffee at a cozy coffee shop and sipping on it.
  • People watching.
  • Walking through Exclusive Books and browsing all the books on the shelves.
  • Spontaneous dinner dates.
  • Going for long walks on a Sunday morning.

Things I am loving in lockdown …

  • Spending quality time with my better half.
  • Enjoying what feels like we are taking a holiday in our home and finally enjoying everything we have.
  • Getting creative with my exercise routine and doing things I wouldn’t normally do, like running 5 km’s in the lounge or even trying my hand at Yoga.
  • The little routine we have created.
  • Our little routine that includes morning coffee and a 5 o clock sundowner every afternoon outside in the fresh air. Obviously weather permitting.
  • All the time in the kitchen thinking of new exciting dishes to make and making them.
  • Watching a live game drive every day on Wild Earth.
  • Finally having the time to read! I have already devoured 4 books in this lockdown and know I will get through a few more. All this reading time is just bliss!
  • Saturday night games night with friends over Zoom while drinking wine.
  • Savouring every sip of coffee in the morning because I’m not rushing to be somewhere or to do something!
  • Getting cosy and snuggling up on the cold and rainy days.
  • And sitting outside in the sun on the sunny days!

My tips for working from home

Being a blogger means I am one of the lucky ones that gets to work from home. So because I have been working from home for a while now, I definitely have some tips to share with you. Now that everyone is working from home I’m sure you can all do with some help! With the next few weeks in a total lockdown, here are some tips to ensure optimum productivity.

Tips for working from home:

  • Make your bed as soon as you get up
    – If you make your bed first thing in the morning as soon as you get up, you will feel like you have accomplished something. It may be a small task but that feeling of accomplishment will set the tone for the day ahead. You will feel encouraged to do more throughout the day which is just what you need. Not only does this set the tone for the day, but also to walk in and out of your bedroom and see a beautifully made bed gives off a positive feeling and that’s just what you want!
  • Have a shower and get out of your pyjamas
    – Unfortunately you cannot spend the whole day in your pyjamas! You will feel totally sluggish and extremely lazy if you do. Well that’s what used to happen when I tried to stay in my pyjamas the whole day! Instead I highly suggest having a shower, brushing your teeth, washing your face and doing all your normal morning things and finally putting on either a fresh pair of “day pyjamas” or active wear or a tracksuit. Follow your normal morning routine and maybe even put some make up on if that will make you feel better. Spray a bit of perfume and get on with your day like normal. But just make sure you get out of your pyjamas!
  • Find a space to work from
    – Set up a little area where you can do all your work from. I’m not saying take over one of your important-already-occupied rooms and set up a whole home office but just create a designated space/desk where you can sit down and concentrate. This means don’t work from your bed! Make your little work space cozy with candles, a photo frame and even a bunch of flowers.
  • Create a routine
    – You definitely need some sort of routine to get you through the day especially when you’re working from home and it’s hard to find a balance between work and leisure. Having a routine allows you to switch off at the end of the work day and unwind! I like to wake up, have coffee, and do some work for an hour or two. Then I like to do my exercise in the mid morning so it breaks the day up a bit. I will be doing a full blog post on my every day routine in lockdown so stay tuned for that.
  • Take breaks throughout the day
    – Don’t forget to take breaks! This means that you consciously get up from your laptop and do something different other than your work. Make a cup of tea and read your book for a bit or go outside and walk in the garden. Just do something that will rejuvenate your mind. Maybe even do a quick 7 minute workout video – there are a lot of these videos now on YouTube.
  • Make a to do list of every morning or the night before
    – If you don’t plan and structure everything that needs to be done, your mind is going to be all over the place and you won’t get anything done! This means make a to do list and work your way through it during the day. Don’t forget to do the mundane tasks first so they out of the way and you’ll have a productive day ahead!

Recipe for my famous chicken noodle soup

0

The other day I posted on Instastories that I was making a huge pot of my very famous chicken noodle soup. When I say it is famous, it’s because I get asked by a family member or a friend to make it all the time. I received an overwhelming influx of messages on Instagram asking for the recipe for my famous chicken noodle soup. So, in these times, where soup is definitely very comforting, I’m going to share the recipe with you. Don’t forget they say chicken soup is good for the soul and we could all do with that right now.

What you need:

  • 1 onion – diced
  • 3 carrots – diced
  • small packet of mixed butternut and pumpkin – diced
  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breast – cut into cubes
  • 2 celery stalks – chopped
  • any other vegetables you would like to add
  • 2 blocks of vegetable stock cubes
  • 1 cup of small noodles of your choice
  • salt and pepper to taste

What to do:

Bring a large pot of water to the boil. Throw all the ingredients (except the noodles!) into the pot and let it cook on medium heat for a good two hours before serving. You may add more or less chicken stock cubes for your taste preference. About half an hour before serving, add the noodles to the soup and boil until soft. Serve and enjoy!

So there you have it. The recipe for my famous chicken noodle soup.

One thing to note is that a recipe for soup does not have to be followed to the tee! You can add what you like and however much of it to your likings. When I make soup I normally just eye ball it but I do taste it along the way to make sure its tasty and delicious!

High Tea at the Oyster Box Hotel in Durban

We have just returned from the most magical weekend at the Oyster Box Hotel in Durban. When I say it was magical, I mean it in every way! This hotel is an award winning 5 star luxury boutique hotel and everything about this hotel is truly magical. Especially the High Tea at the Oyster Box Hotel!

It is no wonder that this hotel has won so many awards and has been called the number one hotel in South Africa. After a brief stayover, I can definitely see why. It oozes absolute luxury in the most beautiful setting in the heart of Umhlanga.

As you walk through the front door, timeless glamour and charm welcome you. And so do the friendliest staff with their heartiest smiles who will happily go the extra mile.

Our time at this iconic hotel was spent relaxing, swimming and soaking up the panoramic views from the swimming pool. We also ate a lot because the food at the hotel is phenomenal. From indulging in the extraordinary breakfast buffet, to toasted sandwiches at the pool as well as the famous High Tea and the curry buffet for dinner, it really was a food fiesta!

The High Tea

The Oyster Box is famous for its very indulgent High Tea in the Palm Court. This is the perfect setting to nibble on tiny sandwiches, scones and macaroons while drinking tea out of Royal Albert fine china. The high tea table is filled to the brim with sumptuous treats ranging from freshly baked scones, pastries, quiches and cakes, to finger sandwiches and savouries. It is definitely a treat for the eyes and for the mouths!

We celebrated a special occasion at the hotel and it really was truly special. I can’t wait to return to create more memorable moments and to feel like absolute royalty, again.

Best Romantic Destinations

0

… That I have been to!

With February being the month of love, there is no better time than right now to share a post on some of the best romantic destinations I have had the pleasure of visiting. A romantic getaway can take on any form – it can be a bustling city, like Rome in Italy. Or it can be a secluded beach holiday in Seychelles. It can even be a safari at a private game lodge here in South Africa. But whatever your heart is set on, here is a little bit of inspiration you may need to get planning.

Italy

Italy is number one on my list for the most romantic destination. From walking the streets of Rome, to exploring Florence and getting lost in the alley ways of Venice, everything about Italy just oozes romance. The language, the food, the culture and even the people, what is not to love? There are so many different areas of Italy to choose from, but wherever you decide, I can assure you it will be heart warming. Your days in Italy will include coffee shop hopping, gelato eating, pasta swirling and wine drinking. You will walk hand in and hand while listening to the Italian language of people walking by. It definitely sounds romantic, doesn’t it?

South Africa

South Africa offers some of the most beautiful safari experiences at some of the most luxurious private game lodges. I find these safari experiences to be totally romantic! It’s just you and your partner in the most tranquil setting and it really is just bliss. You wake up to everything laid out for you, from breakfast to lunch and dinner and even snacks on the game drives. You can have dinner under the stars and listen to the sounds of the animals calling. The best part also is that phone reception may be minimal, so you are guaranteed quality time without any interruptions.

Seychelles

I have been to the Seychelles several times and it is literally heaven on earth. With it’s secluded white sand beaches, turquoise blue waters and ultra luxury resorts, it’s no wonder it’s one of the most romantic destinations in the world. There is nothing better than spending a day on the beach, sipping on cocktails and spending quality time with your loved one in the most picturesque setting.

The one place I haven’t been yet but dying to visit:

Greece

A lot of my friends have travelled to Greece for their honeymoon and they all returned with stories about how amazing it was! Obviously it’s romantic if it’s been their honeymoon destination of choice, so that is why I’ve added it to this list. Everything about Greece looks beautiful – from bougainvillaea filled streets, to romantic restaurants on the sea side, secluded beaches and boat trips. I cannot wait to visit one day!

So there you have it, my top 3 romantic destinations. If you want to start planning your romantic holiday, visit Travelstart.

This is what I got up to on Valentine’s Day

1

This year, I found Valentine’s Day to be a lot more special than previous Valentine’s Day. I woke up with such a happy heart on the day of love and all I wanted to do was #ShareYourHeart.

My boyfriend and I agreed we wouldn’t exchange gifts, because to be honest, it’s just not necessary. We have enough teddy bears and fresh roses end up dying and seriously, it’s not worth it. What I did do though, is I hid two Cadbury Dairy Milk Pop Out Heart slabs around our home and made him go on a treasure hunt before he left for work! He found them timeously (phew!) and took his slabs with him to work which I know he shared with everyone! The funny part is that he brought home the actual Pop Out Hearts which he specially kept for me to literally #ShareYourHeart.

I then baked some cupcakes which I took with me to the office. There was no memo, but with the spirit of love, everyone was dressed in red! The atmosphere was there and it was amazing! We ate our cupcakes and spoke about what everyone was doing that evening for Valentine’s Day. So much love filled the air!

After work, I met up with some friends for a quick cup of coffee and it was so good to spend a little bit of time with the one’s who mean so much to me.

Dinner time then came and my boyfriend and I got takeaways from our favourite Italian spot, we put on Netflix and we just relaxed. Of course we had a Cadbury Dairy Milk Pop Out Heart slab for dessert and it was just a treat.

Did you #ShareYourHeart this past Valentine’s Day?

How to generously #ShareYourHeart this Valentine’s Day

11

If you get to the heart of it, Valentine’s Day is all about love. But not just romantic kind of love. It is about spreading love with acts of kindness and generosity. It is about selfless giving in the unconditional interest of making someone’s day a little brighter.

Here are a few ways you can show someone they are important to you and are cared for, just with a simple gesture, on Valentine’s Day:

Help out a stranger anonymously

  • Feed a few coins into someone’s parking meter
  • Pay for the coffee of the person in line behind you
  • Leave your newspaper or magazine on the table at the coffee shop for the next person to read
  • Write positive, encouraging notes and hand them out with a Cadbury Dairy Milk Pop Out Heart slab to strangers.

Take someone out for coffee and cake

Plan a coffee date with a friend you haven’t seen in ages, or an aunty you have spoken to in years or a colleague you used to work with and lost touch.

Volunteer

Donate a few hours of your day and volunteer at the nearest animal shelter, soup kitchen or children’s home. Don’t forget to take a few slabs of Cadbury Dairy Milk Pop Out Heart Slabs with you, and share them amongst everyone!

Compliment someone

Whether it’s their outfit, their hairstyle or just a general compliment, this can really make someones day a lot brighter.

Spend time with the people you care for

Dedicate the afternoon to spend quality time with the people that mean the world to you. Whether its your friends, some family or your class mates, gather them up, chat away and snack on Dairy Milk Pop Out Heart Slabs.

#ShareYourHeart with the new limited-edition Cadbury Dairy Milk Pop Out Heart Slabs, available in Original and Dream. A chocolate heart pops out of the slab which you can give to a special someone or a loved one. You see, it’s all about kindness and generosity!

Ultimate guide to exploring The Robertson Wine Valley

Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are two of the Western Cape’s most beautiful wine regions. I have had the privilege of exploring both these regions countless times thanks to my love for travelling and good wine. There is another wine region in the Western Cape I have always wanted to explore and I can finally say I did just that. This wine region is the Robertson Wine Valley and after exploring the very ins and outs, here are my suggestions on where to stay and what to do.

The Robertson Wine Valley

The Robertson Wine Valley represents over 50 wineries and tourism establishments from the towns of Ashton, Bonnievale, McGregor and Robertson. The valley is a 2 hour scenic drive from the city of Cape Town and takes you through the Huguenot tunnel along the renowned route 62.

Where to stay in The Robertson Wine Valley?

Windfall Wine

Windfall Wine is a small boutique wine farm nestled in the beautiful Agterkliphoogte Valley. This small wine farm offers 5 very charming self catering cottages. These cottages are the perfect getaway and ensure a quiet, peaceful escape from the busy city life. There is a swimming pool, braai areas and gorgeous sunsets every evening!

website: www.windfallwine.co.za

TheLAB

TheLAB is the ultimate country escape with a difference! It combines high-tech automation with eco-centric living. This means that there is a voice-activated automation operating the lights, blinds, shower, music and coffee machine in each room. Together with this there is a beautiful pool with magnificent views, an in-house spa and electric bicycles to go explore the area on.

website: www.thelab.africa/robertson/

What to do in The Robertson Wine Valley?

Do a beer tasting @ Four Cousins

Four Cousins has a new tasting room in the heart of Robertson that is definitely a must visit. When you think of Four Cousins, you think of just wine, but this new tasting room offers so many different and exciting tastings. Like a gin tasting, a liqueur tasting, a whiskey tasting and even a beer tasting. Four Cousins brew their own beer #BoetBeer (I love this name) and I must say, it’s really good beer! The beer is brewed using state of the art equipment and the finest mountain water.

website: www.fourcousins.co.za

Enjoy a cheese platter and wine @ Rietvallei Wine Estate

One of the most beautiful wine farms we have visited is Rietvallei Wine Estate. This very picturesque wine estate is one of the oldest wine farms in the region of Robertson and is home to a range of wines including Muscadel. A very interesting fact is that the Muscadel vine is the oldest of its kind in all South Africa. Visiting this wine farm for a tasting of their Muscadel is definitely worthwhile. While you at it, indulge in one of the best cheese platters you will ever have the joy of eating and pair this with a wine tasting. This was one of the highlights of our visit to Robertson.

website: www.rietvallei.co.za/

Visit a boutique winery @ Lozärn Wines

A visit to Lozärn Wines is an absolute must but just remember this wine farm is open by appointment only. Not only will the winemaker, Salóme, show you around her little winery but she will also share some of the most fascinating stories with you which is told out of true passion. In 2012, Salóme was enjoying a fine Chilean Carménère
with her husband, Sybrand, which led to the planting of a Carménère vineyard two years later on Doornbosch. To read more about this, click here.

website: www.lozarn.co.za

Taste The Difference @ Esona Wines

Another absolutely beautiful wine farm in Robertson is Esona Boutique Wine Estate. Esona offers a wine tasting experience like no other. It is a vertical wine tasting in an underground Kuip. The wine is served in Riedel glasses and is paired with Lindt chocolate, local preserves, art and music. This unique experience at Esona is worthy of its own blog post so stay tuned to the blog for this.

website: www.esona.co.za

Visit SA’s biggest winery @ Van Loveren Wines

Van Loveren is South Africa’s biggest family owned winery. Here you will find a tasting room offering wine tastings, and food and wine pairings. The winery also offers a wide range of activities such as hiking trails, garden tours and cellar tours. I definitely suggest doing a cellar tour. It really is mesmerising to walk through a winery this big.

Minkys guide to a perfect Valentine’s Day

3

Couples, singles AND friends can all celebrate Valentine’s Day. This day offers an exciting opportunity to put together adorable gifts, eat delicious food and spend time with the people you love. It is a perfect reason to #ShareYourHeart with those that are important to you. And this year there is definitely something for everyone!

I asked on Instastories for some ideas on how to celebrate a perfect Valentine’s Day. And here are some of your answers together with my ideas …

Some ideas for a couples perfect date…

Chocolate fondue: Whether you want to dress up and splurge or take the cozy, homemade route, put together a chocolate fondue with some of your favourite treats and snuggle up at home.

Take a road trip: For the more adventurous couple, hop in the car and drive out somewhere exciting. A day of exploring out of the city will definitely make a memorable day. And don’t forget to pack a picnic hamper with a whole lot of treats!

Be the chef: If you’re looking to celebrate without spending a ton of money, cook a meal with your better half. Pull out your recipe books and throw together a dinner for two. This is definitely an easy and fun way to stir up some fun.

Some fun for the singles…

Buy yourself a present: Instead of feeling down about not having someone to share gifts with, buy a gift for yourself! There is no shame in treating yourself to your favourite chocolate, a new book or even a bunch of roses.

Do something you enjoy: Whether it’s going to a yoga class, baking or taking a bubble bath, it is important to find time for yourself. Valentine’s Day couldn’t be a better day to do so.

Movie marathon and chocolate binge: There are definitely enough chick flicks on Netflix to cover us all this Valentine’s Day. But what’s a movie marathon without too much chocolate? Stock up on all your favorites, and revel in the sappiness of “The Notebook” and “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”

For a night with friends…

Host a “Secret Cupid” gift exchange: Gift exchanges are especially popular during the holiday season. Put your own spin on the ever-so-classic “Secret Santa” and organize a Valentine’s Day gift exchange with friends.

Go out for dessert: Who needs dates when you have cake? Head out for ice cream and make it a date to remember!

Get crafty: While there is an endless supply of adorable ideas on Pinterest, finding time to actually recreate them is rare. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to sit back, relax and get crafty with your friends.

Whatever you do decide to do on Valentine’s Day, just remember to #ShareYourHeart with the new limited-edition Cadbury Dairy Milk Pop Out Heart Slabs, available in Original and Dream. A chocolate heart pops out of the slab which you can give to a special someone or a loved one. You see, it’s all about kindness and generosity!

Hello 2020

0

I am so happy to see the back of 2019. It’s not that it was a terrible year with terrible things happening, but it was just a year of nothing! Nothing exciting happened, nothing big happened, and it was just blah. There was so much negativity in the air in 2019. There was no inspiration and no motivation. That’s just how I felt but I am sure a lot of you felt the same too.

But anyway, its a new year and a new decade and things can only get better from here. I am so excited for 2020! I really am – I have so much inspiration and motivation and I just want to get going already. The first thing I’ve done is fixed up my home office, and as I sit here typing this, I am loving sitting in a new positive space. It really changes your whole mind set!

We are back from the best holiday ever in Cape Town. Remember I did this Cape Town Holiday Bucket List? Well we managed to tick a lot of items off this list – I will definitely do a follow up blog post on everything we did. We ate a lot of delicious food, we drank a lot of good wine, we walked a lot and we explored a lot. It was just amazing! We definitely came home with happy hearts and this has definitely set the tone for a fabulous 2020.

So here’s to 2020! May it be an amazing year for every one!

PS: If there is any specific content you would like to see more of on the blog this year, please do comment below and let me know. More food? More travel? More lifestyle? Comment and let me know.

Ideas on how to start preparing for Valentine’s Day

3

Either you love it or you hate it, but Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. I fit into the former, because I love it. I find Valentine’s Day to be the perfect reason to spoil not just my better half but also to spoil friends and family. It is one day in the year to go that extra mile for people that mean the world to you and just #ShareYourHeart. It’s not about being romantic, it’s about selfless giving, and I definitely approve.

If you are not sure about what you can do to start preparing for Valentine’s Day, I have put a list together of some ideas to get you on the right track. These ideas will definitely inspire you to start thinking of ways you are going to #ShareYourHeart this Valentine’s Day. And everything you do, has to have Cadbury’s Dairy Milk’s limited-edition Pop Out Heart slab, available in Dairy Milk and Dream.

So here they are:

♥ Decide whether you and your partner will be dining in or dining out. If you will be dining out, book your restaurant of choice well in advance. If you will be dining in, plan your meal and start preparing early to avoid any rush on the day.

♥ Arrange to have a big bunch of your Moms favourite flowers delivered to her on the day. Include the new Cadbury Pop Out Heart slab in the delivery.

♥ Buy your Dad his favourite bottle of whiskey and have the bottle engraved with his name on it. That little extra touch definitely adds something special to the gift!

♥ Start putting together little gift packs for your colleagues. Perhaps you can include a slab of the new Cadbury Pop Out Heart.

♥ Buy a gift voucher for a spa treatment for your best friend early in advance. Give it to her timeously so she can book her spa treatment on Valentine’s Day.

♥ Set up a movie night for you and your besties. Decide early in advance what movie you’ll be watching and who is in charge of snacks. Nothing better than your besties, a romcom, wine, popcorn and chocolate, especially the new Cadbury Pop Out Heart slabs.

♥ Arrange with your colleagues who will bake cupcakes to bring on the day.

♥ Start crafting the perfect gift for your partner so you can avoid clichés by giving something more meaningful and from the heart. Put together a hamper of his/her favourite thing but don’t forget to include the new Cadbury Pop Out Heart slab.

As you can see, Valentine’s Day is not just about sharing romantic love. It’s about showing someone that they are important to you and cared for. So, if you start preparing early, it’s easy to #ShareYourHeart and make the most of Valentine’s Day with all the special people in your life. Cadbury has made it easier to show your love and share your heart with their new limited-edition Cadbury Dairy Milk and Dream Pop Out Heart Slabs that are now available at leading retailers.
