Tea and scones at the Scone Shack in Cape Town

While we were in Cape Town recently on a very long summer holiday, we had a bucket list (AKA a to-do list) of everything we wanted to do. You can check out this list in this blog post titled Minkys Cape Town holiday bucket list. We managed to tick off a lot from this list, which I will do a separate post on. But along the way we also added more to the list. Like, visit the Scone Shack in Cape Town near Cape Point. So one cold misty day, we made our way to Cape Point and my goodness, it was exciting.

The Scone Shack

The Scone Shack is completely off the grid on a little farm situated just before Cape Point. We missed the sign that you’re supposed to turn off but after realising not so long after we made a u-turn and we finally found the Scone Shack. We parked our car and made our way to the Scone Shack. Free roaming chickens, a pig and a few other farm animals welcomed us. It really was exciting to be somewhere different.

The Scone Shack is a a very rustic but oh so cute shack. Inside is a little kitchen where all the magic happens and a few tables and chairs. Outside is a lovely tea garden in a beautiful setting. The shack is made from an old collection of repurposed windows.

The Scones

The scones are baked everyday in a wood burning oven. New batches of scones are baked when needed throughout the day, so they are always fresh! Not only are there traditional scones, but also vegan and gluten free. The jams are homemade in a potjie on the fire using seasonal fruit and as little sugar is possible. Some of the jam flavours are apple and cinnamon, pawpaw, pineapple and ginger, pear and star anise.

The menu is limited to fresh scones, tea, plunger coffee, hot chocolates, milkshakes and chai lattes. Some days you may find there is a carrot cake, Cape Brandy pudding or a Pecan Pie with ice cream on offer.

The scones are served with fresh butter, cream and homemade jam. And they are absolutely delicious! They have a special smoky taste from the wood burning oven. They are crisp on the outside and fluffy inside. We had the apple and cinnamon jam which was tasty. And the freshly whipped cream was velvety!

Everyone says these are the best scones in Cape Town, and we definitely agree and give them a two thumbs up 🙂

Tip: The Scone Shack in Cape Town only accepts cash. So make sure you have cash with you!

Another reason to buy Cadbury Dairy Milk: The Glass and A Half Project

0

When you are a chocoholic like myself, you don’t really need an excuse to buy chocolate, do you? You just put a slab or two of Cadbury Dairy Milk in the trolley without even thinking. If you need an extra excuse now to put even more slabs in the trolley, I have the perfect reason.

Cadbury Dairy Milk has launched The Glass and A Half Project and everyone should participate. For a limited time, when you purchase one of five 80g or 150g Cadbury Dairy Milk variants, wrapped in these very cute special edition sleeves, you will help give the precious gift of childhood by contributing towards R1-million worth of educational toys, books and games, to orphaned and vulnerable children across South Africa.

Go on and treat yourself or a special someone to a few extra slabs. It is right now, during these uncertain times, that a little act of kindness will go a very long way. And now more than ever we cannot underestimate the importance of play.

Cadbury Dairy Milk understands that Play is the language of childhood. Through play, children begin to understand their physical world, become aware of their environment and learn to communicate with other children and adults. Play helps children learn to solve problems, enriches their creativity and develops leadership skills.

So in the spirit of generosity, fill up your trolley with a whole lot of Cadbury Dairy Milk slabs. Not only will you be satisfying your chocolate cravings, but you will be performing the most selfless act of kindness.

My skin care routine

There is no better time than during a pandemic to love yourself a little more. In the middle of lockdown I promised myself I would practice more self care. I started doing more things for “me” – like reading more, going for walks and eating a bit healthier. I also started taking much better care of my skin by incorporating a proper skin care routine that my skin so desperately needed.

My skin care routine was non-existent. This is because I have psoriasis. I was always too scared to use anything incase it caused the psoriasis to flare up. I washed with water, hardly used any creams and just did nothing for my skin! Thankfully though, besides for psoriasis which is under control right now, I have fairly good skin and hardly get pimples. But my skin was totally lifeless and dull!

I spent a lot of time doing research and reading up on Bioderma. Thankfully, at the time, Dischem was having their 3-for-2 special on Bioderma products. So after doing all the necessary research, I started off with 3 basic products – a face wash, a gentle exfoliator and a cream. It’s two months later, and because my skin reacted so well to these 3 basic products, I have now built up quite a fair selection of products. And now I am proud to say I have a proper skin care routine. My psoriasis hasn’t flared up at all from these products, my skin is glowing and appears more dewey and just all round beautiful, even if I do say so myself.

My skin care routine:

Cleanse:

Every morning and evening I cleanse with Bioderma Sensibio Face Wash. This is a simple gel face wash for sensitive skin. It foams up nicely which is great and leaves my skin feeling clean with a layer of softness. A win is that it doesn’t aggravate my psoriasis, which just shows how gentle it is by soothing and calming the skin.

Exfoliate:

Twice or three times I week I use Pigmentbio Foaming Cream which is a very gentle exfoliator for hyper pigmented skin. The reason I chose this exfoliator is because I do have a bit of sun damaged skin with dark spots. It’s not very noticeable, but I know it is there. So I thought at least one product aimed at this would help! This exfoliator is great because it has definitely reduced these dark spots and brightened my complexion. I like to think it’s this product thats giving me a permanent glow, but it’s definitely all!

Serum:

A serum is a concentrated product aimed at specific skin concerns. After I cleanse, I apply Hydrabio Serum which is a hydrating serum for dehydrated sensitive skin. What I love about this serum is that it moisturises instantly. I also like that a little goes a long way, and such a small amount hydrates my whole face.

Moisturise:

I alternate between Sensibio Rich or Sensibio DS+. The former is a rich soothing and nourishing cream for sensitive skin. My skin feels extremely nourished after I apply this. And what I love is the subtle glow it gives my skin! I then use the latter on the dry scaly patches from the psoriasis. Even though nothing will get rid of psoriasis (yes I have tried everything!), this cream definitely gets rid of the dry scaliness.

SPF:

Every morning, no matter what I apply SPF! I alternate between Photoderm MAX Creme 50+ and Pigmentbio Daily Care 50+. Both offer very high sun protection. I love that the latter is aimed at pigmentation by helping to reduce the appearance of existing dark spots and prevents new ones from appearing.

Mask:

On the days that I exfoliate, I then apply Sensibio Mask. This is an intense soothing and moisturising treatment for sensitive and intolerant skin. Because its winter now and my skin gets dry, I sometimes use this as a moisturiser at night. Shhh, don’t tell anyone!

Eye cream:

And last but not least, every morning and evening I apply Sensibio Eye Cream. This eye cream is aimed at soothing and moisturising the eye area, reduce puffiness and minimises wrinkles.

So there you have it. What I like about Bioderma is that it is affordable French skin care. And we all know the French have good skin! I also love that these products are perfect for sensitive skin, like mine. Often Dischem has 3-for-2 specials with Bioderma, which makes this product range even more worth it.

PS: This post is not sponsored in anyway. I am just sharing the love for something my skin finally loves!

This is what we ordered from The Forum Kitchen:

For starters we had the seared whole brie with toasted nuts and truffled honey. This was divine! For mains we thoroughly enjoyed the wellington of free range beef fillet. We had this with the sticky sesame cauliflower. And for dessert we indulged in the peanut butter ice cream with dark chocolate sauce and candied orange.

Everything was absolutely delicious. All I had to do was plate up and warm up everything. I think ordering an exceptional meal like this will allow foodies a fun, tasty and fresh dining experience in this new lockdown life.

5 thoughtful gifts you can have delivered to someone now

It’s a weird time right now because we can’t celebrate things in the normal way we used to by gathering, hugging and celebrating. The one thing we can do to make up for this is send an extra special thoughtful gift to someone who is celebrating something. By putting in extra thought and choosing a gift that is extra special, you can still show someone how much they mean to you.

So here are 10 thoughtful gifts you can have shipped to someone right now that will make them feel extra loved:

5 wonderful wines we drank during lockdown

0

It was our special treat every weekend of lockdown to have a bottle of wine to look forward to. So we may have sipped our way through quite a few bottles. Some of the wonderful wines we drank during lockdown include a delicious Chardonnay, a beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon and an MCC. These are some of the few wines we kept for special occasions but with everyday in lockdown being a special occasion, we thought what better time to enjoy them! With wine sales being open again, I’ll definitely be stocking up on more of these favourites.

De Wetshof Limestone Hill Chardonnay 2017

One of the wine farms we wish we visited while we were exploring the Robertson wine valley, is De Wetshof. We even drove past it but unfortunately we didn’t pop in. There is always next time though!

Limestone Hill is un-wooded with hints of citrus fruit. It is a wonderfully balanced wine and does not have that distinctive heavy oakiness most Chardonnays have. We enjoyed this wine with grilled chicken and vegetables and it was perfect!

To buy: www.dewetshof.com

Zandvliet Shiraz Rosé

If there was ever a wine that truly sparked romance, it’s this rosé. From the pretty label to the delightful rose gold pink colour and even the tasting notes. The wine displays a distinct bouquet of rose petals, melon, strawberries and raspberries coulis.

In true romance, we lit candles, laid out a blanket in the lounge and we watched a romcom and snipped on this wine. We also enjoyed it with a delicious spaghetti aglio e olio pasta and it was *thumbs up*!

To buy: www.zandvliet.co.za

Fat Bastard Cabernet Sauvignon

On a cold winters evening is there anything better than a hearty wholesome red wine? This Cab Sav is a favourite for these kinds of evenings. Think a deep ruby red wine with rich ripe fruit of black currant, blackberries and a hint of chocolate and vanilla.

We enjoyed this wine with braaie’d fillet steak, mushroom sauce and baked potatoes. It was heavenly!

To buy: www.fatbastardwine.co.za

Pierre Jourdan MCC Belle Nectar

A little bit of bubbles can go a long way, right? By saying that I mean the happiness lasts forever! This bottle of Pierre Jourdan MCC Belle Nectar made us very happy! Besides for the bubbles, the pretty pink label itself brings such happiness. This is my new favourite MCC that I want to have a never-ending supply of. I love how deliciously sweet it is with aromas of rose petals, strawberries and Turkish Delights.

We sipped on these bubbles one Sunday afternoon when we had a little something something to celebrate. We sat outside, in the cold, wrapped up in blankets and it felt like were somewhere more special than home.

To buy: www.cabriere.co.za

Alto Rouge

This red wine is an absolute classic and loved by most! It is an iconic blend made up of 31% Cabernet Franc. 28% Shiraz, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 9% Petit Verdot.

In the glass the wine is an opaque deep red colour with deep rustic aromas of red berry and cherry fruits. This wine is perfect for any occasion, but we thoroughly enjoyed it with a braai of lamb chops and salad.

A list of things that are making me happy right now

  • Sipping on my coffee in these cold wintery mornings. There is just something about the cold that makes coffee taste more delicious than it already is.
  • Thoughtful friends that gifted us the most beautiful present before lockdown. These new Le Creuset pebble mugs (I call them pebble mugs!) are just too beautiful and I think they help contribute to coffee tasting more delicious as per No. 1 above.
  • Since lockdown started I have been spending more time in the kitchen whipping up delicious exciting meals and I couldn’t be happier about this! The kitchen has always been my happy place but I didn’t realise until now how happy it made me.
  • The show Chesapeake Shores on Netflix. I love a happy, hearty and wholesome show to watch every night with dinner or before bed and Chesapeake Shores is that show! There is no fighting, killing or zombi apocalypses because that’s definitely not what we need right now! It is just a happy show that leaves you feeling comforted after every episode.
  • Every afternoon we head outside with a cup of tea and a biscuit or two. We sit in the sun and breath in the fresh air while listening to the birds chirping outside. I absolutely love this time of the day!
  • Our early morning walks. I love getting fresh air, seeing all the dogs and noticing all the beautiful flowers along the way. If there is one thing I am missing the most, it is being out in nature.
  • My naked nails. I never thought I would ever say this but I am loving having bare nails. I have had gel nails on my nails every day for the past 3 or so years and now to finally have a break and see my own nails for the first time is a breath of fresh air!
  • Spending precious time during the day reading. If lockdown has given me one thing, it’s time. And I have definitely used this time to read! I am now on book 8 of lockdown. I will be doing a blog post on all the books I have read so stay tuned for that.
  • Letting my hair soak up a treatment for the whole day, at least once a week. Because I have nowhere to be and no-one to see, I am putting a hair mask/treatment on my hair more often and letting it just soak the whole day. My hair is definitely loving this!
  • Being able to spend time in our home doing more of the things we love.
  • Going through old photos on my phone and reminiscing all the fun times with friends and all the special travel moments with my favourite travel companion. These definitely make the heart a lot warmer!
  • Pasta. You know how much I love my pasta, but now being at home and experimenting with different flavours and dishes, I love pasta a whole lot more!

What’s for breakfast? Here are 10 ideas for the morning

There are two types of people in this world. Those who eat breakfast and those who don’t. The former cannot wait to get out of bed in the morning for their favourite meal of the day. And the latter sleep in because they’re in a committed relationship with their bed.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I won’t harp on this fact because we all know it is.

Now that time isn’t such a rare commodity right now (during lockdown, that is!) waking up for breakfast will be a thing you can finally enjoy. On the porch, in your garden and not in the car in morning traffic!

IDEAS FOR A DELICIOUS BREAKFAST

eggs, eggs, eggs

There are so many ways you can eat your eggs. Scrambled, poached, fried. omelette or boiled. And don’t forget the most fun way: egg and soldiers, when the egg is perfectly boiled with a runny yolk!

My favourite way to eat eggs is scrambled with chopped tomato, baby spinach leaves, olives and topped with feta cheese. I like to have this with a perfectly toasted pita bread! It’s really good especially for dinner on a Sunday night.

greek yoghurt and fruit

Greek yoghurt is an excellent source of protein. I like to keep a few individual tubs in the fridge because they make for a perfect snack or breakfast treat. Grab a tub, top with berries, toasted coconut flakes and some honey and breakfast is a winner!

homemade granola

Granola is the best, especially an extra nutty granola because it kinda tastes like peanut butter 🙂 I like to make my own homemade granola, then I know exactly what ingredients is going inside. Granola topped with yoghurt, some banana and honey is the bees knees – no pun intended! Here is a recipe for my super delicious homemade banana granola.

oats, oats, oats

A bowl of oats is always comforting and more so now that it is coming to winter. Not only is it comforting, but it is so healthy and very wholesome. But it has to be done the right way or no way at all. I like it creamy, with a little bit of maple syrup and a whole lot of chopped fruit. If you not sure how to make a perfect bowl, here is how in a blog post.

pancakes

The best thing about pancakes is how quick and easy it is to make. And also how delicious they are! Bonus! My favourite are these healthy banana pancakes using coconut flour – click here for the recipe.

a smoothie

If time isn’t on your side and you still want to enjoy something delicious, I suggest you whiz up a smoothie. Or if you want your kids to enjoy something extra special, whiz them up a peanut butter and jelly smoothie or take a look here for more recipes.

avo on toast

My heart beats a little faster when I hear the words “avo on toast”. It is just the most delicious. With a sprinkle of chilli and it is perfection. My favourite is avo on rye toast with a poached egg on top. Yum!

apple compote

I’m not sure if its apple compote or apple “compost” because in my youth I called it apple compost and no one ever corrected me but now when I call it that I get funny looks. So for my blog I’ll call it apple compote. Apple compote, greek yoghurt and some granola. Oh my! My favourite favourite favourite breakfast lately. Here is the recipe because I just know you want to make. A little suggestion is to add a few pears too.

peanut butter and toast

Peanut butter and toast and a cup of tea. Especially on low GI bread because those seeds make it extra tasty! Still the best breakfast ever, in my opinion!

carrot muffins

Last but not least, if you have a sweet tooth, then these carrot muffins will do. Have one with a cuppacino and it will feel like you’re at a cozy coffee shop somewhere

What is your favourite go to breakfast?

The most delicious banana pancakes (using coconut flour)

Is it just me or do you also crave pancakes every morning when you wake up, especially now in lockdown? There is just something so comforting about delicious pancakes especially when drizzled with an extra dollop of Nutella. Or sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. Or even topped with some berries and honey. The toppings are endless!

At the beginning of lockdown, I googled a recipe for “healthy banana pancakes using coconut flour“. This recipe came up and let me tell you, after a little tweak here and there, they are delicious! I love that they’re on the healthy side because they are made with coconut flour and bananas. There is no sugar and no other nasty stuff! And, another bonus, they are gluten free. Not that I am gluten free, but if you are, these pancakes are a winner!

Here is my recipe for delicious banana pancakes (using coconut flour):

  • 2 very ripe bananas
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 – 6 tbsp coconut flour
  • coconut oil for frying

Mash the bananas up until only small bits remain. Whisk in the baking powder until thoroughly mixed through. Next add in the eggs and whisk until well combined. Lastly, add the coconut flour but adding 1 tbsp at a time. The batter must be a scoopable batter that is not too thick.

Grease a pan with coconut oil. Place a crumpet size amount of batter into the hot pan and then cook on each side until golden brown. A little tip for cooking these pancakes is to cook them on a low heat for a little longer than normal and covering with a lid so the centre cooks through.

Once they are ready, plate up and serve with Nutella. Or with fresh berries and honey, or maple syrup and yoghurt – whatever your preference is!
